Round 26 - Broncos vs Panthers - Post Match Discussion

The Tigers can still make the finals as long as the Raiders lose. they would still have to beat the Storm and make up a 14 point differential over the raiders... quite possible

Haha, I suppose. I got ahead of myself.

It would depend on how much the Raiders would lose by. Basically the tigers victory margin added to the absolute margin of the raiders loss would have to be 15+

So if the Raiders lose by 16 the Tigers only have to win to make the finals.

But the Raiders are playing the Warriors and the Tigers are playing Melbourne, if it was the other way around it'd be a fair chance.

Back on the game itself I have been proven quite wrong about T'eo. At the time I didn't think he was a great loss and that his absence wouldn't really be felt - as he's shown this past month, that couldn't be further from the truth.

I was quite vocal about Copley too. I wouldn't say he's there yet but he's showing more promise now than I've seen before. He still seems to have that one mistake/missed opportunity in attack every game though.

That was a terrible performance. Glad we make the finals, disappointed that that will be taken to mean this year doesn't need a serious internal review.

Honestly, to have had the possession we had and then be down 0-6 at half time against a team that was clearly just there making up the numbers is really bad. Then to drop the ball off the kick off in the second half.

The first half try they scored was from a line break, right through the guts.

Te'o being our best player over the past month is more an indication of how poorly (zero impact) Gilllett and Thaiday are playing IMO.

Te'o is a go to option for the crash ball on the line. Hunt is our best ball player at exploiting that

Another thing is that we were probably one good pass from Norman on about 5 attacking raids of scoring 5 more tries. We really did dominate the game for the most part but couldn't execute simple plays. Well Norman couldn't anyway. I can't believe he hasn't improved over the season. He must perform the plays well at training and then fall apart during the games. It is puzzling because all the so called experts suggest that Norman is the man for the job. I feel for Ben Hunt. He has shown decent form when playing in the halves and I thought had shown more than Norman of late but he gets shunted to the bench to play a role he isn't meant for.

Frustrating to watch at times, but good to get the win.

Our attack still looks about as threatening as pencil case, which is a big concern.

Norman setup Glenn with a cracker of a pass, but other than that he was absolutely dreadful. I've defended him a lot this year, but gee whiz, some of the plays (or lack of really) he came up with tonight were pitiful. The number of times he received the ball with an overlap on his outside yet elected to run it himself... argh!

I've said it before, I genuinely believe comparing 2011 to this year, that Hook has coached Norman to run the ball when in doubt.

Second, the half gaps that Norman would have turned into linebreaks at Toyota Cup level are 10% chances at NRL level.

The couple of half breaks that he made in the first half could have been line breaks if Hoffy or someone else was there to back him up.

Norman is a very talented player and with experience will get better. He needs a better coach or a one on one coaching over the entire season from an outsider (not Locky because Corey has to make his own mark). One of the Johns brothers maybe, Kevvie Walters?

Dam straight. Fact is, one way or another, Hook sees Norman and Wallace long term in the halves.

He will probably go down the path of Beale and go elsewhere to play in his preferred position.

Then again these boys (Hunt and Hoffman) haven't played that much better than their replacements when they were given the opportunity.

It is a fair point TBH. Norman needs the structure IMO. He needs to be able to execute the plays and he needs guidance. I would be begging Lockyer to come back to coach our halves once a week if I was Hook. **** the Johns Brothers they are wankers.

Also, the award for the biggest arse I have ever seen goes to that woman that did the post game presentation in the red top.

She's taken out Dave Taylor's mortgage on that award.

Thought Petero, Glenn and Te'o were our best forwards, with Copley the best of the backs. Great comeback from him.

No doubt he ran himself too much but at least 3 times he went to pass and there was a player in his way. Flat attack doesn't work unless you have a player out the back sweeping as an option.

thats why we looked so much better with hunt in the halves and norman at the back. he was actually sweeping around the back.

im positive that those teo tries on the right edge in the last few games were in-part assisted by norman being an option and the defense being in two minds.

One million percent. This is the thing I say about Cronk all the time. He is an excellent player, no doubt, but having the defence know that Billy Slater is ready for an attacking raid either side of him gives him so much to work with. That little bit out doubt in the defensive line about not knowing when Billy will pop up is just perfect for him. Hoffman doesn't seem to do that the way he plays fullback but I thought Norman did. A bit of doubt about the fullback and a powerhouse second rower running a good line. Many of the top teams games are built on it.

I don't know if Hoffman can learn it but you look at the broncos highlights over the last 5 or so years and you'll see how quickly they went from huge fullback involvement with Hunt to very few tries scored (comparatively) utilizing an attacking fullback. When Beale play fb, the amount of tries we scored from 'that' play increased significantly.

I thought Gillett was very good last night. He ran strongly and defended well, including a try saver. A large part (but not the only) of the problem with Gillett is he isn't being used to best advantage. Instead of him, the coaching/game plan focus seems on T'eo and Glenn running holes, which is fine, but not enough given what Gillett is capable of. Maybe we should "sell" him to someone like Hasler or Bellamy who will certainly put Gillett's huge talent to better use, and we can buy a decent 5/8? So far, neither Norman nor Hunt are doing anything special. Last night, Norman's vision was woeful, but then, as another has observed, maybe he is being coached to run instead of look and pass, which I actually doubt.

As for Thaiday, I thought he had improved on recent performances, but the problem is not only or just Thaiday, or any individual, it's that the side seem to be over-coached to play flat, and support play is still very average.

At least last night Hoffman tried to do 2nd man plays but hey, we inevitably stood too flat for him, and other runners, to have any impact before the defence was in their face.

Last night's style of play will see us flogged next match which will be such a shame given the talent in this squad.

Hunt>Hoffman.
Yes K hunt.

Now that IBA mentions it I've just realised how much we missed Hunt at that back, he was a playmaker in himself, certainly more of a playmaker at 1 than Norman at 6.
