Round 26 - Melbourne vs Broncos - Post Game Discussion

Melb certainly weren't at their best which kept Bris. in the game for 75 mins but class eventually shone through in the end and the Broncs predictably miss out on the post season for the third time in 5 years. At the start of the year, I tipped them not to reach double figures in wins and I also stated that Ben Hunt wouldn't work out at HB, happy to be proven wrong on both counts (especially the latter). Without Hunt's brilliance, we are in the basement and that is no exaggeration. The Broncs are a much better side than last year (they would want to be) but are still miles away from being contenders but Benny will sort that out and I look forward to being playoff certainties once again.Thankfully the "Hook nightmare" is now over, nice guy, terrible fucking coach who incredibly lasted four years, only in RL could this ever happen. Onwards and upwards.

in fact with a career winning percentage of 55%, most other teams would not have sacked him

That's what the commentators were saying during the game last week.

Rabs said something like, he has a winning % of 55 & his top prize is the sack.

I'd probably rather that the Warriors & Eels win this weekend, to save us the embarrassment of losing to some nuffies in the first round, we need to just move on and look forward to next season.

Why?

Tonight was all about auditioning for the finals, we don't have what it takes.

Limping in to get smashed is utterly futile.

I agree that we don't have what it takes to win this year but I would much rather making the finals (even limping in) then miss out completely. We've been battling for a spot the whole year and a finals appearance would be a just reward for fighting and for the player's efforts all year. This year is a lot different from 2005.

I can see wanting to make it just to keep up a streak but we blew that in 2010.

The only benefit of playing another game is the players get another match payment, other than that.. nothing.

Why wasn't Maccas try a penalty try or Hoffman in the bin

Im guessing it was because macca dropped it.

Hoffman should have been sin binned.

This is maxwell for you. He is a shit ref. We would have been better off with Cummins.

Last night game was a good reflection on how things have been this year. Close but so far.....just not good enough.

The players who we rely on to stand up in big games like that, actually mirrored their own seasons as well.

Hodges - tried to do to much himself. Terrible defence

Copley - still has Dale moments. Lost balls and wayward passes that are killing us.

Barba - still very much, one big mehhh !! He would look better in the QCup. His 2012 purple patch will never been repeated.

Hunt - patches of brilliance over shadowed by a poor kicking game and being MIA on the field.

McCullough - can't pass for shit ....too damn slow....is killing momentum from dummy half.

Parker - Brilliant....again.

McGuire - Quite acheiver...tough & uncompromising. Definitely the heir apparent to the no.13 jumper when Parker retires IMO.

Gillet - mixed bag.

We would have been better off if Storm beat Roosters last week.

Their mindset could have been different and I wonder if Bellamy would have risked putting Smith back on for a nothing game...

When Storm lost to the Roosters, we were doomed.

I think Hunt had a hard time getting the ball when Hodgo kept getting in the way. The Hunt intercept was Hodges fault for mucking around at dummy half

There was also a huge gap out to Oates so that pass had to go a long way. I'm not sure who should have been in the gap but clearly the structure in attack was upset.

Oates had a shocker but I blame Hook for benching him for a season and then expecting him to play for more than his usual 5-10 minutes in what was effectively our grand final. He was in front of Maranta under one of those bombs. I think his Wallace hairstyle upset his game. (i kept thinking he was Wallace). I was very impressed with his run from dummy half from our try line though. The defense caught him quickly out of dummy half and tried to push him in goal but Oates had already set himself and drove them back 10m.

Vidot made a big miss on the wing which T ed and to run back and cover.

There's a rematch of last week this Sunday. Anyone interested in him should watch it as last week there were 4 Wynnum defenders on him every tackle. (Game is at Wynnum because they won. Yay! - Hope they can repeat). Granville should be playing again too (even though he's not listed again).

He's not playing for Easts tomorrow. Groin injury.

Different finals system though, I don't think Bennett ever missed the top 8 with us.

Maybe not ... but the teams he had though his entire tenure as Broncos coach were far better than the one we have now. most players these days just take the best offer.

Doesn't matter, we still missed the finals on his watch.

What the next excuse.

Oh I have one, it was a different competition.

Bennett 88 and 89.

Being as they were an expansion team, I think we can forgive WB for that one, 3 years later they were champs and thus the Broncos dynasty beginneth, it's a shame what it has become without him.
