POST GAME [Round 3, 2024] Broncos vs Panthers

Letting in soft ass tries from the lack of communication (we fell for a dummy from Mitch fucking Kenny), 76% completion rate, our senior half only pulling his finger out in the final 20 when Panthers had clocked off and it's negative to not find that acceptable.

Ridiculous.
Walsh going early was clearly a domino falling moment, he would have been our main kicker which we struggled on all game and Cobbo going to fullback left his edge exposed with a backrower there who was lamb to the slaughter.

it was definitely a situation we wished we had Capewell still.

I dont think i am really. You need players to step up and help out players alongside them who are forced to play out of position. In this case Piakura should have been guided by Arthars and Mam who are both experienced enough to do that. I dont think they did it.
You constantly seem to not understand how defensive systems work. There was one where he went the opposite way to his second rowers and created a gap in between. They were going to score untouched either on the wing or through that gap so it didn’t matter because it broke down about 4 players inside him. Can’t do much as a winger and it really shows a lack of understanding on your part when you think it’s a cardinal sin for a winger to come off there wing. Rule 1 in layman’s terms is copy your inside man. When your inside man suck at defending you can’t do much else as a winger. Sure when you go hero mode and race out of the line and do stupid shit it can be on the winger but this was not his fault tonight.

@1910 Are there any viables you see giving us more options up front that we've not added to our squad yet?

Very harsh considering the odds we were up against, to be honest. You would have flirted with clocking off too if you were out there having to deal with Penrith's shit on top of everything else.

I can see where people are coming from with Oates in attack as a second rower battering ram but he would have nowhere near the fitness required to defend in the middle for anything more than a 10-15 minute stint before becoming a liability.
10-15 minutes from Oates is still 10-15 minutes better than Tapau/Baker.

Our game went to shit when we had that awesome set of 6 when we rolled down field, gotno tackle.4.and a.sloppymoff.load.from.csrrihane to Jensen is dropped, they get down field from a penalty and score. We were on top then and squandered our momentum. We never came back form there.
We need To value possession more

76% rate. I’d have a celebratory wank every weekend if we did that more often we haven’t gone at 76% for like 5 years.

Think you're being very harsh on Mam.

Firstly, he may technically have been our senior half, but he was forced to play a roll that is completely unfamiliar to him. How many games has he played without Reynolds AND Walsh? Not many.

Secondly, he's 21 and can't just do it all on his own. He was playing with a makeshift centre, second rower and fullback. How as he supposed to just immediately get things going? It was always going to take him time to work it out and there were some fantastic signs by the end of the game.

Thirdly, did you see how the hookers for us were playing?

No 21 year old half ever is doing much with the situation Mam found himself in tonight. Considering what he had to deal with, he actually did very well and showed some super promising signs.

A few random observations:

* Yes, Madden is "safe" (quote Gordon Tallis), but won't succeed Reyno. Spare us a year of this and let him to talk to other clubs.
* The Walters/Madden combo is anaemic, at best Tigers' tier.
* When Billy went off Ezra came to life, we picked up momentum and won the game 2 tries to 1. Until he returned with ten to go.
* So start Smoothy and give Billy 20 at the end.
* The rookies Piakura, Mariner and Willison impressed. Mariner will be top tryscorer of the year.
* Cobbo mostly excellent, even out of position. Same with Piakura.
* Universal told-you-so from everyone to Kevvie when we found ourselves down a back, with no one on the bench.
* We rely on Walsh's leadership (chatter) from the back as much as his attack and defence.
* Patty, terrific as always, but needs to be reminded he's captain and what that entails.
* Fletcher and Taupau aren't it.

If one error deep in your attacking half is the difference between 36 unanswered points being scored against you or not than **** me that’s some tough shoes to fill week in week out. We got fucked in the ass by the footy gods move on. No point over analysing the side. Taupau can go and we need to find a suitable second row/outside back option. Otherwise move on.

We want a second rower/centre for **** sakes give Jed Cartwright a call. I know he just signed at Newcastle. **** even Dylan Lucas or Brodie Jones would be fucking awesome.

Agreed, I don't think Marty belongs in first grade anymore.

Experience is good sure but it's usefulness drops off hard amongst ability pretty quickly when it comes to middles, it's a washing machine in the middle that becomes hard for those several years into their 30s.

It was not good, but...at 34-2, we looked dead and buried and Penrith were the Harlem Globetrotters and we outplayed them in the last 20 minutes when most sides would be weak minded and give up.

They tried right until the end without our three best players. There's some positives there.

Baker is an absolute plodder, and needs to be replaced by Hunt, who is another plodder, but at least he can cover an edge. I would honestly rather carry Oates on the bench and get him to play prop for 20 mins and be outside back cover.

Tapau should cop 10 weeks for doing the same shit again, and also being useless.

Madden again extremely ineffective.
What do you think about willison on edge though, he looked pretty impressive there.

In my view he is probably our best backup option there/doing middle till we sign someone which we clearly have to do.
