POST GAME [Round 3, 2024] Broncos vs Panthers

Looking at the replay, pretty disappointed that Walsh cops one and Kotoni doesn't take the space on offer and just stops and props.

A better centre either scores himself or puts his winger away.

And another thing!

That bullshit penalty on Staggs for moving Luai out of the way! It was a huge nothing burger and something Luai does MULTIPLE times every damn week in far more disruptive ways and it's OUR GUY who gets done for it!? The irony!

Exactly Pete. He loves the old step back in - back out shuffle but more often than not it just loses him time. The last time I remember the shuffle working was against Storm in QF1...

One thing that really stood out for me was how we defend. When a team like Penrith who are not notable off loaders are off loading at will there's a problem. Penrith were hitting with their shoulders then putting the attacker on their backs regularly in tackles. We did this maybe once a set with most other tackles we grab the runner and hold him up trying to get a slow play the ball allowing them to walk another 3-5 metres.

It's not working and we need to start hitting with a shoulder. A dominant tackle is why Penrith get away for holding down so long in a tackle and why we were getting pinged for non existent 6 agains by Sutton.

On Sutton he should have put May in the bin after that high shot on Walsh. If Staggs did that to Cleary you just know he would have been penalised, got 10 in the bin and suspended. May's tackle was after he passed the ball and he made high contact with such force that Walsh missed the rest of the game and could miss further games as well. There's accidental head clashes then there is trying to take out an opposing player with a collision after the ball was passed. May should see 2-4 weeks on the sideline but knowing the NRL he will cop a small fine or a warning.

Absolutely! The way May came in for that tackle he was ALWAYS going to make dangerous contact. This is why the rugby has implemented their system to protect players and include mitigating factors that help the ref adjudicate on the response. To say he was just rushing in to make a tackle is total bullshit. He went in to hurt Walsh and Walsh even jumped to try to avoid a head clash, because May SHOULD have been bending down to make a tackle.
Until the NRL sorts out the way players tackle to wrap up the ball, this will keep happening.

Framework

They don't do this because teams ::cough:: melbourne ::cough:: would miraculously fail a HIA on one of those piss weak 'reportable incidents' off a dive and have fresh legs sitting there ready to go to finish off the game.
HIA’s are assessed independantly and not by the team for this exact reason

I think you are both right and not right.

I truly don’t believe May is coming in with any intent to hurt Walsh.

But I think the important part that makes this an illegal tackle, is that he doesn’t bend his back to make a tackle.

The duty of care sounds like a cop out, but in reality, he is the one making the decision to come flying out of the line, if he wants to make a big tackle, he should be putting his body on the line to do so, not putting Walsh’s body on the line to do so.

He never makes any attempt to actually make a tackle, he just looks to body check him.

If he bends his back and spears Walsh through the guts, it would be a highlight reel tackle that even we could appreciate.

Independent doctor can only call them from the field if the team's onfield trainer doesnt.

That's the only job the independent doctor has... sit on the sideline and watch a TV.

The team's doctor conducts the HIA on the player not the independent doctor.

Like when May and Edwards had a head clash, both were reeling on the ground but only May went off for HIA.

I think this was the moment May over committed and left himself no room to pull out. The ball had already gone from Walsh's hands. May props, raises the right arm and shoulder then leaps. Its only the very last second he throws his head back.

I don’t disagree except for the last part, even if he does bend his back it is an illegal tackle because it was late. Everything about the tackle was wrong and if he wasn’t a Penrith player he would have been in the bin at the very least.

I don’t think it was a deliberate dirty shot, I think he just got it all wrong. Regardless, the result was catastrophic for us as despite it likely being an accident, we copped the rough end in every way from it. We lost our best player super early to an injury he was never coming back from and May wasn’t binned so we couldn’t activate our 18th man. I just think we were super unlucky.

I don’t get how everyone keeps saying it was accidental? It was late and he jumped into it. Even if you take the head clash out of it it’s late. Add to that that by the way he jumped the only reason it wasn’t a shoulder charge to the head was because his head got there before his shoulder.

The facts are everyone is saying it is an accident is because it was a Panthers player doing it to Walsh. If this was Walsh or one of our other guys doing this to Cleary they would have been sent and every media dipshit calling for half a season on the sidelines.

Call me crazy but I want Madden to be given a few weeks, let’s judge him after a month. He had so much working against him tonight the poor guy.

Not crazy, just reasonable.

So what do we do with Fletcher Baker?

He has a crack but is just poo. No substance in defence and when he makes a good run he drops the ball after. Seems like a frantic player.

At least Hunt can defend well and play middle and edge, whereas Baker struggles with both lol

I was rather disappointed on the 1st game of the year I could attend. My favourite player Reece Walsh goes off in the 1st 10 minutes, was a massive let down. Having to watch the boys get a score put on them and missing our 3 best players, was rather annoying. But only one week and we'll bring it home again against the Cowboys.
