POST GAME Round 3 - Broncos vs Cowboys

Great game by all, threw the ball around and finally attacked. The hands from Kahu in the passing dept was just brilliant. Glenn another great game and cracking start to the season and Gillette was solid in defense with some great hits, no more rushing out of the line thank god. Another solid game from Maranta as well. Well done boys, really lifted and were rewarded.

We absolutely need Boyd, the fact that Reed and Maranta are still in the team (with only Boyd out injured) proves we do.

Kahu is a great young player, I'm a huge fan of him and have wanted him in FG for a long time, I'm actually glad Boyd is out injured for a while because it gives Kahu a chance to shine and show why he deserves to be in our first 17 every week.

1. Boyd
2. Kahu
3. Copley
4. Hodges
5. Oates/Vidot/Maranta (in order of my preference)

To be clear, I'd be happy with either Kahu or Boyd being at fullback/centre/wing, they're both versatile players.

Boyd is a CLASS player, he's safe, good defensively, can set up trys, can finish off trys as good as most and instills confidence in the younger guys in the team. It's easy to win when you're on top, when we're in a grind and struggling, guys like Hodges and Boyd can lead the team to victory, proven premiership winners and rep players. Kahu while I rate him very highly, is still a rookie and needs plenty of time to become world class.

For those who missed the presser, when asked if Boyd's return will cause selection head aches Bennet replied "nup, no selection head aches"

Everyone pulled there weight but Reed. Simple switch provided Dale's calf is good is Reed out, Copley in.

Last night was the first night in a long time that I saw a 5/8 in a Bronco jersey that looked the goods. Milford may of started slow but he is showing an incredible capacity to learn and improve... and do so quickly. The timing he showed on a few of his passes yesterday leads me to believe that Lockyer may be working with him. He also was positioned much better in receiving the ball yesterday which made him way more effective. He is also showing he doesn't shy away on the defensive end. Really refreshing after having to endure the rot we have witnessed in that position post Darren.

Also, how nice is it to finally watch a game where at half the game is just about in the bag? Seems to be good for my nervous system.

Just on Kahu, NRL Stats tweeted this last night before the game:

@NRLstats: .@brisbanebroncos have the best kick defuse rate of any team in 2015 (90%), @nthqldcowboys the worst (36%) #NRLBroncosCowboys #NRLBRINQL

Yeah I don't understand the digs at Kahu under the high ball, his shown high confidence in diffusing the ball and has done so with disregard often to his safety and given time he will only improve as he builds his confidence.

Lets hope that means that Kahu and Boyd are both clearly ahead of Maranta, Vidot and Reed for spots in the backline.

Not that there will be a straight swap of Boyd in, Kahu out.

Assuming he continues to improve exponentially, which I think he will, Kahu will be wasted on the wing. He has too many skills however, so be it. I accept Boyd will be FB, and that he is a good FB, but I don't have to like it, which I don't.

Classic Bennett really, if there's one thing he doesn't lack, it's confidence. He always seems absolutely sure of himself and the direction he's taking, which I think rubs off on the team because they all feel that confidence in them.

I'm seriously glad Bennett is back, for a long time it's felt like we've just been playing football but not really moving in any positive direction, I now believe we're a club on the rise and that's a great feeling to have as a fan. Having a coach that is brutally honest about our flaws, that is willing to speak to the media, and that has a clear vision and direction for where he wants the club to be this year and in a few years is wonderfully refreshing.

Griffin was our coach for a few years, but I never really got the impression he had a long term plan for the club, I also never got the impression he realised his flaws and tried to fix them, all his major moves seems reactionary (Barba to 5/8, Thaiday/Parker to prop, the co-captaincy), whereas Bennett knew exactly what he wanted from the get go, he knew it was one captain, who he wanted to play in the spine, which players would be playing where, quickly with no fuss let go of those he didn't want and quickly made some signings for players who he did want.

Bennett is not a tactical genius, but he has a few very strong attributes, he's a great man manager, he understands the fundamentals really well, and he has pulling power so we're less likely to lose players we want to keep and vice versa. All that ensures that while he's coaching us, we'll always be a competitive team. Choosing the right support staff (I'm hoping Walters in particular can be that) is crucial to us taking that next step to being a great team.

Bennett will never win us a premiership on his own, but he has arguably the most important attributes a coach needs, that with the right support staff we can be a genuinely great team again.

It finally feels good to be a Broncos fan again. I just hope the classic Bennett post origin slump doesn't make a return this year.

Agree with this. I think if Boyd is 100% fit he's playing FB. Kahu straight to the wing. Otherwise it's boyd to the wing to get some match fitness.

I'm glad no one's getting carried away with the win - just like they shouldn't get carried away when we lose in the opening rounds.

Sure, the Cowboys weren't great, but you still have to give credit to our boys and the performance they put in.

Have to agree with those mentioning Reed - I've never been in the 'Reed is shit' club, but in these first few rounds, he's looked a level below the rest of the team. I was a bit surprised last night - he seemed to have trouble with a lot of the basics.

Delighted Kahu had another great game. He may make the occasional mistake (such is life for a young, inexperienced player), but he always more than makes up for it. His ability under the high ball is brilliant - I haven't felt this confident about a fullback since Coke was at the back. He's also a much stronger runner than people give him credit for, and isn't too shabby with the ball-playing either.

The only reason Boyd will play FB is because that is where Bennett wanted and wants him to play, regardless of the form of anyone else. Bennett made up his mind on that last year.

Like I said, assuming Kahu keeps improving which I am sure he will, he will be wasted on the wing, but at least he will be in the team and we have a back-up FB (and probably a damn good half or 5/8 in the making).

So when did you make up your mind that Boyd wouldn't and couldn't be our best fullback? Last year? As soon as his signing was announced? As soon as it was rumoured that Bennett was coming back? It's pretty obvious that you've decided that Boyd can't be our best fullback for whatever reason regardless of his form or that of anyone else.

I don't like automatic selections not based on current form and just because a player happens to be a coach's golden boy while at another club.

Boyd is a good FB and a damn fine winger as I have ALWAYS said.

Our best FB will be decided ...on FORM, when Kahu has had his time there AND after Boyd takes hisc place and shows us he is better.

I think that's a flawed argument, Bennett has seen Boyd play for about 10 years now, he's also seen Kahu for a whole pre-season and now 3 games, he might be playing favourites (burden of proof is on you to prove that), but more than likely he's doing what any coach does, and that's choosing who he thinks the best player is.

Hodges didn't play a game for a year and half a few years back and came straight back into his favoured centre spot, is that an automatic selection? It sure was, but that's because the coach rates him as our best centre, not because he was a golden boy.

My argument is simple. You pick the best player on form.

If they have a reputation, you certainly give them a go - no problems with that. The question then becomes you select the best player on the form that he shows after sufficient game time.

Having said that, my question is: if Kahu begins to, as he looks like doing, and only gets better at seriously carving up the opposition by the time Boyd returns, will that justify Boyd going to FB immediately and moving Kahu?

What if Boyd starts on the wing to regain fitness and confidence and Kahu keeps carving up? What then?
