POST GAME [Round 5, 2022] Broncos vs Roosters

My Player Ratings
1. Tesi - 4

I thought he was pretty good in attack probably an 8 in that category but defensively he was woeful and didn’t make a tackle and was involved in almost if not all tries defensively.

2. Oates - 10
Any game you get a hat trick, run 169 metres (47pcm), 5 tackle breaks and lined some blokes up defensively. 1 pretty big error in our own end but it’s been a while since we have seen that sort of performance from him. So happy for him

3. Staggs - 10
Best player on the field by a mile and one of the better if not best game I have seen him play. Outstanding. Some of you were freaking out big time with all this dropping talks and it was never going to happen as it was that ridiculous. Let’s hope we can get more performances towards that end but obviously that won’t happen every week.

4. Farnworth - 6
Wasn’t outstanding in any area wasn’t bad. Got 112 metres from 11 runs so we’ll done in that area. Can’t be a star every week and he did his job probably would have gotten a 7 if we won but we didn’t so he suffered slightly.

5. Cobbo - 7
Some big plays. Almost scored that blunder if he picked up the ball but it was tough one to pick up. Went a bit quiet in the second half but at least the errors dropped significantly.

6. Walters - 6
Thought he was quite good offensively bar the intercept he threw. I think that whole left edge needs a bit more depth especially when we get closer to the try line it ends up really flat and it becomes tough for Billy to pull the trigger on a lot of plays. Funnily enough the intercept they did have plenty of depth. Defensively he seems good 1 on 1 but I think he needs to work on his defense within a structure a bit. In saying that I think that whole edge/ our whole side in general gels better with Walters as our 6. He seems like a good leader as well for a relatively inexperienced player.

7. Reynolds - 8
I thought general play he was amazing. Good defensively. Disappointing he missed the 2 goal kicks but I’m not blaming that on the loss in the end you can’t rely on 100% goal kicking to win you games you have to put games beyond doubt and we didn’t manage to do it. In saying that 2 kicks I would have liked to see him make.

8. Palasia - 7.5
I love him as a middle. Quickly becoming one of my favourite players. His stats don’t quite give him an 8 but I think our side is better with him in the field. Great addition to our side through the middle this year.

9. Turpin - 6
He certainly improved. His running game was better and his defence was faultless as usual. His service is still nowhere near NRL quality and has been abysmal. I do think the Turpin/Paix rotation is the best option as Paix’s defence isn’t good enough as of yet.

10. Haas - 9
Massive as usual. Not much else needs to be said about that performance. What we have come to expect and love and I think because this is our expectation it takes away from how much we should appreciate him. I want to keep him as long as he keeps putting in.

11. Capewell - 7
I think he could definitely get through more work offensively but he did his job and that’s what you expect for 500k. Him and Riki are massive for our defence.

12. Riki - 7
Probably could get through more runs and work offensively. I love him though his defence, his work ethic, some of his runs are brutal. I say the furtherest I think I ever have from the field yesterday (still good seats, what a stadium) and that’s the loudest I have ever heard a shot when he put one on a chooks player.

13. Hetherington - 8
I thought kevvies management of the bench improved but I was disappointed with Hetho’s lack of minutes. Played well and I seriously think it’s no coincidence that when he plays 13 we win games. Love him, he earned that jersey rightfully from the pre-season and last year it’s his to keep now for mine.

Bench:
14. James - 6

I thought in areas he was better this game but he can’t make metres ti save his life. It’s dead obvious when he is running a decoy cause he runs full pelt something he doesn’t do when he knows he is going to get whacked. Would love to see if we could change his mindset a little bit, it is probably a bit harsh of me to say from the couch but he seems a bit scared.

15. Jensen - 7
I want him to stay on this bench until his performances suggest he shouldn’t be because he played well, as he did in the trials as well.

16. Robati - N/A
6 minutes, 1 run. Not really fair to keep selecting the bloke and not giving him a platform to develop in his young age. You pick him play him or don’t waste his time and let him play cup.

17. Paix - 6
I hoped he shit it in this game. Not that he played poorly it was just a nothing game. His running game was non existent. His defence wasn’t great but on the flip side his service was far superior to that of Turpins

What’s the difference between 52 and 50? Why would you want 50 over 52? Sorry these are the nuances of the game I don’t know at all.

50 means you're half wants you to be in the middle of the posts- black dot- 52 means in line with the far post.

You might be 30 meters out it's an imaginary line.

Reynolds would want to be at the 50 so he can attack either way and if he wanted to get to 52 at the post creates a long side and a short side- means they have to get their numbers right.

Storm are very good from attacking from a post. Watch them get to a post so they can then attack long side or short side.

I'm still not sold on Billy at 5/8, I can't put my finger on it but he just doesn't seem to be able have an influence on the game.
Not sure how TMM is going in qcup as to whether he is worth a shot, otherwise I'd like to see Tyson get a shot. I just love his competitiveness and he can put on a good ball to get a player through a gap.
I think it's about time to give Paix a start and have Billy at 14 because I think that's where he offers more to the team. Turpin is just so poor with his passing game and can't seem to get the forward pack humming.
I'm not sure how Herbie would go at fullback but I wish Kev would give him a try there as I think his fitness is up to it and has the speed and elusiveness to cause the opposition a few headaches. I'm also not sure how he will go catching bombs but I suppose there's only one way to find out.
I would also like to see Herbie take over the goal kicking as he proved a really reliable kicker when he took on the job last year.
It would not only give Reynolds a chance to not have that pressure on him but he would be in the huddle after a try is scored to give the team guidance and getting their minds back on the job for the next Set of 6 .
There is starting to be some light at the end of the tunnel but there is still a long way to go to get the consistency that we are all looking for.

This was Turpin’s best game for a while. Makes no sense to drop him after this game

Paix, while granted only had 25 minutes, didn’t do anything to suggest he should be starting

I get its nice to have a 2nd row capable reserve just in case who can also play middle but kevvie needs to either start using robati more or give him his minutes in qld cup instead. He'd be lucky to have played 30 mins total in his 3 games. No wonder he hasn't played well he's trying to make an impact in such a short time.
I'd be running a flegler, jensen and carrigan forward rotation off the bench. Carrigan, Jensen and flegler would keep our go forward and defence very good.
James could be 1st drop where he could do 20 mins total with 2 X 10 minute spells when we are defensively under the pump at the end of halfs.
Robati and piakura need to smash the door down in my eyes to get a look in. The "just in case/10 mins for experience" reserve is a luxury we can't afford
Is there a rule that if the player plays less than 15mins in NRL they can go back and play ISC on the same weekend??

Seems odd that Robati has rarely been getting used.

Manly are another great example when playing well. Play to the post and link with Trbo on the long side..

Tesi stats 1 ta, 2 lba 1, 1 lb, 16 runs for 150 mtr, 10 Tb, 0 errors. He can't be everywhere in our 20 meters no fullback in the NRL can be. He was great in defensive cover in the line when he was needed. He was following Staggs and Haas ready for offloads. He had a great game and should be our fullback the rest of the year to develop in my opinion.

I'm a bit suspect on Walker's try, the ball seemed to roll down to his chest before crossing the line. saying that, I reckon Corey was offside on his last try.

Is Reynolds fit, seems no more than 70% for mine

Oates is 40 tries away from breaking the club's try-scoring record for most tries for the club (142).

He's currently 27, turning 28 this year. He hasn't had any season-ending injuries so that should help him prolong his career.

I reckon he has another 4 years in him.

Both tries were fine.

Walker had the ball tucked in when he ducked under Tesi and the ball touched the line as he was going over and he still had his hand on the ball.

Oates was most definitely onside. The space between the tip of ARey's boot and the 30 metre line is shorter than the space between the tip of Oates' boot and the 30 metre line.

Two big moments in the second half cost us. Nui penalty for offside after being called out at least 3 or 4 times and Turpins fuckwit pass on the first tackle that went about 10m infront of the person it was meant to go to. We had all the momentum before both of those plays.
You forgot Capewell's idiotic obstruction on the fifth, totally unnecessary and led straight to a try. Stupid shit.

That's on one side of the ball. Attacking-wise he's going pretty good. The issue with his defence isn't just that he is caught out of position, it's that he's not putting his body on the line. He's trying to "catch" the opponent (maybe trying to wrap up the ball?) but not using his body to stop the momentum or try to bearhug to wrap up the player.

For Walker's try you can see him position himself beside Walker to grab the ball and it was completely ineffective. Pretty much the same for Manu's first try, he's just bumped out of the way easily. He needs to watch how the better fullbacks forego all self-preservation and use their body. He's built low to the ground so he should actually excel at if he gets his head in to it.

On Oates, I love the way he positions himself for the attacking high ball. Most of the defenders don't watch where the ball is going, they watch where the attacker is running and put bodies in the way to prevent a path. So Oates initially runs to a few metres wider than where the kick will land and then angles in as it's coming down. It also helps the catch - running straight to the spot means the ball is effectively coming from up and behind you, whereas getting outside it and angling in means it's coming more from the side.

Ladies and gentlemen, for your consideration. Ryan James has taken three hours of rugby league over five games to amass 220 metres of go forward!! Payne Haas did it in one game!

Of course, going forward isn't important for a prop, right @pagey?

Oates has been vintage, I really hope we re-sign him - but only for 12 months at a time. He's one bloke who aside being likeable as all ****, has put his hand up and said that all the shit with Bennett/Siebold did his head in and he was kicking stones and not putting in, on or off the field. I appreciate that honesty, and I think so far he's one of the only ones who has admitted what we all knew.

One thing that stood out to me lastnight was that we're still losing the ruck, and badly. It seems like in most tackles, the boys end up on their back and tangled in with defenders. Yet we look so awkward when tackling. Is it unfair to put this on Bennett not liking the wrestle? Because we have always been absolutely terrible at it. I think we have improved, generally, over the years...but teams like Roosters, Storm, Panthers just seem to get away with murder. I don't know the solution here, and again, we've improved. I think NRL stats had about half a second difference in average play the ball speeds...which isn't much, but over 80 minutes of football that adds up and it's pretty significant.

Tesi I have no issue with really in attack, and pretty much for the same reasons as others have said. It's obvious he still has a lot to do on his defence. He seems to have become more vocal at the back, which is an important improvement. His positioning has improved as well I reckon. But yeah, his willingness to put his body on the line to stop tries is still lacking a bit. And his confidence under the high ball particularly needs a lot of work, get Milf back to put up bombs for him 3 days a week.

I was really happy with the attitude and scramble lastnight. I'm glad we've started the up-and-in edge defence all the top teams are running with. Some soft tries but they did struggle to score really, so I'm happy with that. Crushed for the boys, we probably deserved the win on balance, but were just outclassed. If we play like that every week we are absolutely top 8.

Another thing which occurred to me...this is the type of performance we were putting in at the back end of last year. The fact it's happening early in the season is a great sign IMO. We are on the way up, there is no doubt. Reynolds will start to have more impact as the season goes on and he learns everyone's game and vice versa. The last 2 weeks were utterly atrocious, but we took another big step forward this week. Now to back it up again next week - and honestly, I think we will. We've really taken it to Penrith over the past couple of years even though we haven't gotten the result. A showing like lastnight will go a long way to pushing them once again.

He needs to retire. He's had it.
