POST GAME Round 5 - Sea Eagles vs Broncos

Missed the game last night and just watched the replay. Certainly was a ‘game of two halves.’

I didn’t think the refs were that atrocious. We were. It’s almost as if 2 different teams played in Broncs colours.

We should have won the game at 18-nil, but deserved to lose after a second half like that. Boy’s no-try was an absolute disgrace but was the only real howler for mine.

Haven’t bothered watching the press conference, what is Seibold going to say? We’re young? We have to learn the lessons? I accept the blame?

This team, coached by this guy, is going to be doing absolutely NOTHING for a very long time...

Watched some of the game back before leaving for work this morning and the inconsistency of the 6 again rule is legitimately making me want to stop following.

Look at pretty much all our 6 agains this year (wouldnt be more than 8 anyways id guess) but nearly all of them are late game to get the count up and they are tackle 1 and 2.

Then you see the ones we concede. Theres no way Manly weren't holding us down equally as long as we did for some of their 6 agains. There was 2 that were rapid play the balls and they still got 6 again.

Ruining the game
Funnily enough everyone I’ve talked to in person loves the rule change, it’s probably great if you’re not a broncos fan. Just zero consistency and there’s no replay of the event so you can’t see what happens.

I fucking hate this rule change.

After 2 days i can reflect on the game with a clear head.

I think its good we lost this game the way we did. Reason being - complacency. We arent going to challenge for the premiership this year. 2021 we should aim for top 4 and 2022 is the year. If we won this game against a 'top 4' team, our young team could easily have gone back to thinking their shit dont stank. If they are true about 'legacy building' they need losses like this to highlight that no game is easy, and just because a team played poorly for 40 - doesnt mean theyll play poorly the next 40.

We will learn A LOT more from this loss than we would have a win. No individual really played that poorly. Even Joffa helf his own defensively, and he was most peoples worst on ground. It was a team loss. Learn to lose together, hurt together, rebuild together. We start from the bottom (roosters) and we never go that low again.

A lot of people are blaming the refs... and i agree, something is wrong. I used to ref, so i understand a few of the nuances... but for the best in the business theyre incredibly inconsistent. I also think Seibs and the bronx should highlight this at some stage. We should stop respecting NSWRL as they dont respect us. Its not just us either, every team gets hard calls... except the roosters, the storm, and whichever team the system wants to win - which this year, is parra. That has to change.

On to the positives. Staggs and Coates give them time together and that will be a very very good right edge. Oates transition to second row was seamless, good on him. In a full strength side he will be the perfect sub. Paix's runs out of dummy half were great and well timed. Croft was making right decisions, execution slightly off. Boyd had his best half in ages... but still, id rather see him gone. Forwards all did their job in attack.

The primary issue is crumbling under pressure. When the heat is on, we get burnt. This will come with time and experience. Long road ahead guys, keep big picture focus rather than game by game.

Thought Paix was a little bit better on Thursday night, still gassed and his performance drops, his service isn't just slow it's the fact he passes off the ground too much which is old school I think he's just consumed with quick service. Forward pass was a terrible moment.

Now moving on to Herbie, thought it was a great game, and the type of performance I have been raving about in ISC. Great body position though the line, like I have said he finds a way to make ground. Great football knowledge, that's easily his bench mark game now for runs.

The NRL since the re-start has become very very similar to NYC, possession is king at the moment and just like NYC if you have the ball I will score my 24 points and it will swing around the you score your 26 points.

Two things I noticed about the Broncos defence is they're so worried about the middle that they over crowd in the middle and leave the edge sparse, coupled with that they're very poor laterally- not sure of the exact stat but how many tries have been scored from the tracks or further out in the last three weeks and guys untouched? Beaten for lateral movement, speed and passes.

Herbie's a star for all the reasons you say. He always made ground for the reason you say. To do that says so much about his talent. Cements his spot as our permanent wing for mine, as well as Coates on the other.

As for our edge defence, your point is spot on, and explains our porous edge defence. On numerous occasions I saw Offa and Oates standing in the middle, unable to give our edge the cover it needed, and that failure was exploited mercilessly. It exposed our backs to a lot of unfair criticism. It suggests Seibold's obsession with the middle which is annoying and needs to be fixed ASAP.

I agree with your comment about defence. The broncos have usually used sliding defence, but the current team doesnt seem to be able to do this effectively. Perhaps it is time to try a different style? In 2015, hodges and kahu did not use the sliding defence (perhaps because hodges didnt have the knees for the lateral movement). They were a lot more aggressive with their line speed and typically shut the play done much more effectively than our left side.

Hopefully the Second Coming of Peter Ryan will fix all that

The worst thing was the video ref only took one look at either incident before confidently declaring his decision. A sign his mind was already made up before even checking.
I have a sneaky suspicion the video ref is listening to the commentators this year.
Both the commentators and the vid ref said the same thing about Croft on Cherry Evan's try.
"Brody Croft makes a defensive decision ".
I'll rent my arse out for free ride night if he was doing anything but look at the ball carrier before he was hip and shouldered .

I think our problem is not being able to switch between slide and up and in .
We were sliding the first week against Parra when Sivo was 2 mtrs from our line . Against Manly we were up and in no matter what was in front of us. We have to be able to adjust.

Interesting to note that Danny Levi has been charged with a Dangerous Contact charge. The incident happened in the 74th minute right infront of the Manly uprights with Levi in possession. It appears that Levi elbows Lodge in his left eye and Lodge comes reeling out of the tackle. A penalty would have given the Broncos a shot at goal right in-front to equal.

Yeah but that would have gone against the narrative...

So what you're saying is Lodge's face has been charged with a Grade 2 dangerous contact charge??
