Round 6 - Broncos vs. Cowboys - Pre Match Discussion

I don't believe Gillett is really that effective over the 80 on a consistent basis and his defence at times leaves a lot to be desired.

Bringing him off the bench, when the defence is tired and he can pick them off with his foot-work sounds like the best of both worlds.

Essentially, just because somebody can play 80 doesn't mean they should.

Agreed with this. On the other hand though, we've only got 2 proven props in McGuire and Hannant. Thaiday went really well there against the Storm, and considering how important the position is, I'm happy to keep him there and Gillett in the back row for now.

Well I am very geared up for this game. Should be AWESOME! Both teams coming off a win, looking like thing are starting to come together. I think this should be a blinder.

I think we should keep the team as it is, slot McGuire back in if he is fit but otherwise I think they all played their parts well. Although poor Hala is slower than a wet week getting up (he is a monster though), and Anderson is just so slow getting up (rocks in his head).

Hoffman is playing AMAZING out on the wing. Reed seems to be lifting in attack too, I think he is seeing more ball because of Hoffman becoming such an attacking menace out there. I honestly still think Hoffman could easily slot in at centre but if it ain't broke.

On the other side Hodges is coming back slowly but I am sure if you think about it you will see that both our left and right attack will be something to fear in the future of the season.

Norman is starting to come good (dammit) but I think anyone with a bit of time, experience, ability and pace could slot into that role. Apart from the one break early it wasn't a spectacular FB performance that others of similar type could not fill. I almost hope Boyd comes back soon... best player on that poor team.

The middle could use a bit of work but that Titans team had quite a large pack and we made some damn good metres up the middle with a roll on.

Too early to get super excited but it isn't the dreary team we thought we had at the get go. The teams that beat us have been rather good and the new rules have clearly taken their toll on our scoreline. Can't blame the refs (but still, c'mon!). This match could be a defining moment, I think the real test teams for us this year (that we haven't played yet) will be the tigers and the warriors.

Yep I understand the logic behind starting with your strongest side, especially against a pack like the Cowboys.

But I'm not completely sold on Gillett being an 80 minute player or one of our best players...

He's good no doubt but there's Hodges, Hannant, Thaiday, Glenn & Parker all a good step ahead of him.

Then there's Gillett in the McGuire & Hoffman pile.

Also, Norman's pass to Maranta was out in front of him (Maranta didn't look super quick though) and he was definitely covered anyway. I think going inside to Hodges? (check that) would have been the better option.

What about moving Parker to Prop and Thaiday to Lock ? Because lately Parker has been hogging the ball a bit too much, but he been always good yardage maker. I noticed a couple of times in the Broncos Storm match that when Parker got the ball when we had a backline movement going he wouldn't pass it or he'd run back into the middle. Whereas Thaiday has more ball skills then Parker and is really effective if he plays on the side of the ruck.

I definitely think that Parker needs to move into the front row rather sooner than later. That would have been my preference from the start of the season, with Gillett at lock.
Corey has been playing much like a prop lately, has a good offload, go forward and a strong work ethic.
Also agree that Sammy could make the move into the Lock position, but that's the beauty of our second rowers, most of them are easily interchangeable!

Seems like the Australian selectors rate Gillett as well by the looks of it, but as much as I hate the prick, I think Watamong is ahead in the pecking order. On the other hand, if they select Hodges, his combination with Gillett would be a plus...

Lock is pretty much an extra prop, and it works really well for most sides. Dominating the middle of the field is arguably the most important thing in a match. It's where everything begins. It's what creates space for the outside and sucks in the defence. That's why most good teams have 3 middle third runners.

The only change I could see it making is that Parker would be expected to take the first hit-up more often which to me isn't his strength. He played that role from time to time on Friday and I thought those runs were his weakest. He barely caused an impression and unless he popped an offload it was generally a very dud play that killed our momentum.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

He just doesn't have the size to dent the oppositions defensive line.

Let's agree to disagree on that... For mine, Gillett is too much of a weapon to leave on the bench, and it's worth the risk of an occasional missed tackle because he jumps faster off the line than most other players.

Yeah I'm with Porthoz, I'm glad Gillett is playing there now, his had the luxury from the bench and now his facing the challenges of being an 80 minute player on a regular basis and I think against the Titans it really shows he has it in him to provide us that x factor for us in the backrow, I don't subscribe to the view that Thaiday is somehow held back by playing prop, infact the best game I have seen from him in ages and by far the best as captain was playing prop against the Storm. Defensively Gillett can make some poor mistackles, but I have also seen him make some real good ones this season too, fast off the line pressuring the defence.

Chris Walker stole this game from the Cowboys with a 60 meter try with 7 minutes on the clock.
