The team selections for round 5 was difficult for Hook. He could not afford to have Hodges start which meant he needed a winger i.e hence Maranta. This week is a lot easier for him though. Hodges will start with Copley and Vidot on the wings. Oates was very strong against the Dolphins and received the much needed match fitness. He will be on the bench. The only issues we face is the 5/8. Do we continue playing Hoffman or do we switch him and Barba?

I know not many will agree with me but I really think they should consider shifting Barba to 5/8. He is playing that kind of role to compensate for Hoffman, so why not do it for real. The only legimate reasons to not have barba there previously was questions on his defence in the frontline and losing his returns/breaks from the back. Well so far this year these returns have been none existent and I really dont think his defence would be any worse than Hoffmans. It would also mean that Hoffman would stop killing the play. Another advantage I see is that Milford is currently playing great at FB and if he still comes he will have to get used to 6. Why not move barba to 6 now so by the time Milford comes we have players with some experience in those positions.

This would be my team.

1. Hoffman
2. Vidot
3. Copley/reed
4. Hodges
5. Maranta/copley
6. Barba
7, Hunt
8. Kennedy
9. McCullough
10. Parker
11. Glenn
12. Thaiday
13. Gillett

14. Oates
15. McGuire
16. Wallace/Hannant (If hannant feels like pulling his finger out anytime soon)
17. Hala

Hoffman back at fullback would only mask our problems slightly, he'd still be unable to put the last pass on. Have Macca get more involved on Hoff's side, might actually work with Barba on his outside and Hoffman running on his inside.

Hunt is the form half back of the competition. He's making the big plays happen, something we haven't seen for a long time.

The only problem is Barba is an absolute liability in defence.

I'm starting to be open to the Barba to 5/8 idea. At least until he can get confidence back in his bung leg. He can't be any slower than Hoffman, the question will be can he half-break as many tackles through strength as Hoffman does. If so, he's be much better at getting the ball away in traffic. He's already said that he's being utilised more for his ball-playing this year, whether that's because Hoffman sucks or because his leg is not 100%, who knows, but put him in the position to at least use those skills on a whim.

Here's my take on the Gillett to 5/8 possibility which only one person (I think) has mentioned but is a genuine option. He'd actually tick most of the boxes in attack, be it running game, short kicking game etc, and he went kind of okay against the eventual premiers of 2011 (we lost because of bullshit ref calls, I'll maintain that to the grave). But his lateral defence will be his downfall in the position. We've already seen Hoffman get caught out laterally multiple times, with poor decision making, and not covering the inside. Gillett will be even slower again. With the game speeding up, it'd be asking for trouble IMO.

That's true but once he grabs on another player will be able to help with the tackle. As opposed to having to defend one on one and getting dragged to the try line.

Thaiday in form!? His runs, tackles and minutes have all dropped from last year. All I see if hands on hips and him not taking runs. Think he made something like 5 runs against the eels. Don't know why commentators and every one is praising him for 5 good runs a game when that's minimum requirements for his job.

Five good runs is better than 10 shit runs. Quality not quantity, champ.

They aren't that high quality runs tbh... Just looks like it cause of his size and hair.

6 runs for 49m confirms it. The thaiday of old in form would make 15 runs a game bumping off defenders. He used to be Parker like, albeit not as good.

Even if they just switched in attack and D (as was supposed to happen) I'd be far happier.

Many halves are tbh. Put the right players around them and it's a non issue. Besides which, I'm not into picking halves based on defence.

If Braith Anasta can do it, so can Gillett...

Are all of the halves, in all of our affiliated clubs, that shit that we seriously need to resort to this?

Edit: Just a general question btw, not directed at you, just the subject matter.

Mate that was one game, the rest of the year he has been great. If you are going to use stats from the eels game as the be all and end all then no one besides parker and macca are going to look very good

Gillett would be a terrible half.

But still far better than Hoffman.

Not basing it just on eels game. I honestly think he has been below par and can be much better. Just not buying into this he is back in form since he relinquished the captaincy comment every game. Each to their own I guess.
