Round 6 - Titans v Broncos - Pre-Match Discussion

I just watched Hoffman set up Reed to score a nice try v Roosters. It was a good, apparently reflex pass, well timed.

Was it because Hoffman had no option but to pass, meaning, he had absolutely no chance to try and show he is as good as Milford?

Irrespective of my sarcasm, Hoffman threw a perfect pass at the right moment ... so he can do it.

Why has he done it once in 5 games?

Is it because Hook has instructed him to run and do nothing else? Hoffman doesn't look left or right when he gets the ball. He just runs at what he thinks is a gap.

Maybe we should be asking questions of Hook more than of Hoffman, like, his coaching of Hoffman.

You know who is playing well and could definitely play in the halves. Jake Granville. Him and McCullough could swap who plays dummy half and five-eight. He is an ex fullback too so he definitely has the vision needed, and can kick and pass really well.

It'll never happen. Plenty of upside to him playing as a 5/8, being elusive, a good scooter as well as passer. Same problem in defence though. He's okay in the middle when he can hang on for life as the troops come in, but out wider he'll have a bullseye on him for back-rowers (and even most centres) to trample him. I'd still prefer him over any of the juniors though. Much more.

Yeah definitely wishful thinking. His speed from dummy half is just ridiculous.

alright, lets focus on Strasser ... how is he going in the ISC, because if he isn't performing at a consistently high level, he doesn't deserve selection either

I think he's matured and is playing smarter than last year. He threw a very nice ball for a try on Sunday- I'm saying he doesn't throw it last year.

Ideally I would have Parker at 13, McGuire at 10, and bench Gillett.

While Gillett has been a success by and large so far, I think he's still capable of having an impact off the bench.

Unlikely to see these changes though. More's the pity!

Parker moving back to 13 wouldn't make any difference.

I think if Hook is going to make a change with the 6 he will wait till Kahu is back. Kahu would need some Q Cup before an NRL return I would think.

I actually haven't seen how he has gone this year but I have seen some stuff that shows he would do well in a Broncos jersey. This is why there needs to be an actual reserve grade comp though.

What have you seen?

What's a reserve grade got to do with anything?

Does anyone know why Parker is playing front row when we have Kennedy and McGuire and Hannant and Hala?

He's been playing in the ruck for years. He just wears a number that correlates with it now.

He's there because he's smaller, agile and starts games well.

Smaller forwards are having a bigger impact with the new rules.

No he couldn't. Not even if the plague went through Red Hill and he was all that's left.

He doesn't have a kicking game, He played fullback in defence and that was three years ago, he'd bring the ball back for Geeen and then go to hooker.

I've seen him throw some dummies and cut straight through an oppositions defense with what looked like a lot of ease. I've seen him backing up players after making breaks. He is pretty quick. I've seen him throw cut out balls leading to tries and kicking to players to score tries.

If there was a reserve grade comp we would at least know who the next best five-eight would be. And these under 20s kids who are good enough for the NYC but not good enough to play first grade yet would be able to play with players who can defend, giving us all a more clear opinion on how good they actually are.

Not a long kicking game but neither does our current option. But what he does have is a passing game, another thing our current option lacks. And he seriously isn't even that bad of a defender. But yes, like usual you're right and everyone else is wrong.

I'm in 1910s corner here. Granville is no 5/8.

Neither is who we currently have playing that position. I have thrown down names for people to talk about and added why they could play that position. I'm not saying I'm 100% right in saying these guys could play, but you and 1910 have both said that I'm 100% wrong. Which is just ridiculous because there is absolutely nothing that proves that he wouldn't make a good five/eight.

Which one of those things does the ISC not provide?

Ironically you argue for Strasser and highlight things he's done while arguing the ISC doesn't allow you to do those things.

I see every ISC game every week so I consider myself pretty informed on the fact he can't do it.

Because he was able to do those things in a competition that isn't predominantly attack based. How often do you see 50 points scored in the first half in the ISC. No, I am in fact arguing that the NYC doesn't show how good these guys actually are. Which is something that many people on here have stated, hence why it is often said that some players should play ISC so we can see how they can play at a higher level. You've completely misinterpreted what I said.
