Round 8 - Broncos vs. Rabbitohs - Pre-Game discussion

I would actually drop Kennedy as he has done virtually nothing. Every other prop from other clubs seem to all be doing the simple things that Kennedy isn't doing... That is to RUN HARD, and TACKLE HARD. He looks incredibly intimidating standing at 122kg and 6ft5 tall, but he is so soft. He looks angry half the time, but is so gentle. Where's the mongrel?

He puts a pillow to shame in terms of soft he is. He falls off tackles, he runs and stops before impact and just falls to the ground or always tries to put on some footwork before the line. None of that ever works. I can't understand why he just doesn't wind up and let rip. He would leave a few people in his path that's how big he is. Its almost as if he's scared to hurt the guy trying to tackle him. I don't get it

The only reason I would keep Kennedy in the side is because Souths are a big team, and we need some big bodies to counter it... But even then he wouldn't really do that the way he's playing. Maybe dropping him may be what's needed to fuel the fire so to speak, and maybe then he'll play like a Bronco.

My team would be:

1. Barba
2. Vidot
3. Reed
4. Hodges
5. Copley
6. Hoffman
7. Hunt
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Hannant
11. Gillett
12. Thaiday
13. Parker

14. Granville
15. Glenn
16. Wallace
17. Oates

18. Kennedy/Lowrie

No surprise Parker played his best game back at lock. He is just a lot more comfortable taking the third or fourth hit-up rather than the first and second. He needs the bigger forwards to make some room in the first or second carries of the set, which is when Parker has the space through retreating defenders to work his magic and pop and incredible offload. When Parker does that from Prop, its therefore earlier in the tackle count, so not as effective, as the opposition defensive line is set, which means there not enough room to capitalise off.

On Hoffman, there's one thing that I have noticed throughout the season, which may be the reason he doesn't pass to outside players. Since he is playing on the left side of the field, it requires him to pass from right-to-left, which for a lefty, is the 'weaker' side (Just like for a right-hander, passing left-to-right is the 'weaker' side). it is clear he is reluctant and hesitant to pass, which may be because he is not confident at all in his right-to-left pass. Evidence of this was when he made the break, and he had the option of passing to his left to Reed, or passing to his right to Hunt; he chose the latter option, as he felt more comfortable in throwing the pass from left-to-right.

Parker is playing exactly the same way whether he has the 10 or 13 on his jersey. He played well, but did nothing different yesterday from any other game this season. I wish people would get over this "Parker is playing out of position" fallacy.

Same thing with Kennedy. He was pretty good last night, tackled well (missed 3 of 34 tackles) and wasn't that bad running averaging 9 mtrs per run (9 runs). In comparison, Hannant (whom some people think should get the nod for a starting position) missed 4 of his 29 tackles and ran 8 times for just under 8 mtrs per run. I don't how much time each of them played, but it mustn't have been that different.

Granted, for his size, he doesn't run like a George Burgess or a JWH, but he's more of a worker than an impact player, and has always been.

When Parker plays prop he takes runs on tackle one and two and when he plays lock he takes runs later in the count.Kennedy being an impact player who makes no impact makes no sense. I'm sure Kennedy's minutes were more than Hannants.

Anyone know if Korisau will be fit? Luke is obviously a great attacking hooker but I don't think they lost too much with Korisau around. Certainly the drop off in talent from Korisau to McInnes is greater than from Luke to Korisau.

I think we'll put up a very good showing but I find it hard to see where we get the win from. Inglis is still in much better form than Barba and in Sutton and Reynolds they have two genuine kicking options, whereas Maguire will be smart enough to pressure Hunt all night. This will lead to Inglis making some great returns or 7 tackle sets. The other kicking area they have us for breakfast is goalkicking. Even if we go try to try with them it's very unlikely Parker outkicks Reynolds.

We do a great job at times of winning despite Hoffman at five eight, but I think this is an occasion where that particular handicap is too great.

When Parker plays prop, Thaiday plays lock and makes 5 runs a game on average.

If you want Parker to play prop, then McGuire or Dodds or something should play lock.

Agree about Kennedy, he isn't an impact prop, he's a worker in the same mould as a Hannant, McGuire or a Woods for example.

As to Parker, I call bullshit. The only time he takes the first or second run is from a kick start, otherwise, he has been playing exactly the same way as ever. Yesterday wasn't any different from his other games this season.

That is a different story. Gillett and Thaiday have been sharing the lock duties, but I think Thaiday was a bit underdone last game. He has been pretty good otherwise...

Hunt, IMO, was pressured all night. The defence was in his face for just about every kick (He was taken late a few times imo, but that's a different story). That being said, he found Boyd on the full a number of times and finding Boyd on the full is completely different to finding Inglis on the full. Hopefully Griffin is smart enough (lol) to realise that Hunt will be targeted and perhaps instruct Macca to kick more.

To me, 4 key things stood out in the Knights game which transformed this team. The other posts touch on others as well.

1. Barba. He got involved. He popped up when he was needed, and he did things this side has been lacking for years. He played as a second (or was it 1st) 5/8, creating opportunities, making plays. The Gillett try was a gem. At last, Gillett was used as he should be every match, running holes set up by clever playmaking.

2. Energy and enthusiasm for almost 80 minutes across the park.

3. Support play. So so good to see.

4. Ball movement. We made the ball do the work. Haven't seen that for ages, consistently, for so long throughout the match.

5. Defence - on the whole, absolutely 1st class, although there were moments when we still gave them too much room to move. We give Inglis and Sutton room, we have real problems

One problem, Hunt's kicking needs to improve. Too many 7 tackles given away, but he's getting better slowly. He actually did a cross field kick and look what happened. Please give Vidot some chances from cross field kicks.

It would be good to see Macca and Barba take on more of the kicking respnsibilities.

While I still would like to see Barba at 5/8, I know it won't happen, but if he keeps bobbing up on both sides, he will make up for our lack of a proper 5/8.

If we build on this performance, I can see a win by 12.

Interesting to see how Thaiday's return will affect the team. We had a great bench against the Knights - I'd like all of them to get another go.

People are being a little harsh on Kennedy. His running is horrible but better than Anderson. Although his absolute domination of the ruck is amazing. Watch how long he lays on players. I think he and moose starting is best because that way our rotation will have a hard runner at all times and we should have a decent roll on. The meter stats are deceptive you need to compare how many meters are made after impact with defence.

I guess he is similar to Kasiano in the way that he is allowed to lay down for longer than other players. In Kasiano's case it is because he is fat though. Kennedy should have a few more penalties blown against him for laying down on players. I've yelled at him a lot to get up faster this season!

I don't understand why you think playing prop and lock are the same thing... Its not... He clearly is not playing the same exact role...

Just because Gallen plays lock exactly the same way he plays prop does not mean that all locks are props. The only reason Gallen plays that way is because for years no one in his team stood up, so Gallen thinks he has to do everything himself. So he takes every hit up possible, regardless if he was playing prop or lock.

We aren't paying him $450k a season to run as hard as Scott Anderson and lay on players in the ruck.
