Season Opener: Broncos Vs. Cowboys - Match Thread

Congrats to Norman for the MOTM

While he played well, as if Norman was the best on the ground. Thurston was easily the best player out there (even the commentary team said this). I just can't understand why MOTM needs to always go to the player from the winning team.

LOL at the circle jerk on here over Norman though. Talk about talking a player up and putting pressure on a young kid after one good game. Are you guys all NSW selectors?

Agree re not putting too much pressure on the kid. He had a great debut, let's wait and see if he can back it up for, oh, I dunno, 20 weeks before we start talking about him like he's a superstar.

As for MOTM, it was probably a fair call. He singlehandedly saved 3 tries in the first 15 minutes. It would've been a very different result had he not (think 2006 and the Cowboys' 36-4 win over the Broncos at Suncorp to open the season).

If it was going to a Broncos player, then I'm happy enough to agree it should have gone to Norman cause he did play well, although I wonder if he would have gotten it had he not been on debut and so much hype surrounding him.

But if we're talking singlehandedly, then Thurston also singlehandedly got his team in a position to win the game when all seemed lost. IMO he played better than anyone else on the field - he was involved in just about everything all game, and usually took the best option. It just that because he was on the losing team, he doesn't get the reward.

Just seems a little unfair to me that there seems to be this perception that MOTM always needs to come from the winning team

Depends whether you consider MOTM the BEST player on the field, or the most INFLUENTIAL on the result.

Mind you if it's the latter you'd think the referee would get it everytime :P Har.

Does anyone have any links to the highlights of that game? I can't seem to find any.

Was an awesome game - disapointed though that we let them back in like we did though. But great game for the start of the year. Very impressed with the youngins.... and Kempy... I still love you!!!

I disagree with you. I think that Thurston was the best on ground for the 15 minutes that the Cowboys made their comeback. Norman was the best overall for the game. you also have to remember that 2 of the tries that Thurston set up came off mistakes from our rookies.

Well considering his side went from 24 down to 24 all on the back of his play I would say he was probably deserving of a point but as you he probably only played 20-30 dominant minutes so to give 2 for that is a bit crazy.

What absolutely rubbish. Thurston was MIA for 60 minutes of that game. Absolutely MIA. We took the foot off the pedal for 15-20 minutes then Thurston killed us. Norman, Lockyer, Anderson and a few others were by far better over-all.

Oh but the commentary said it, so it must be true. Silly me!

MIA for 60 mins? Were you watching the same game. Thurston was involved in just about everything, all game. Just because his team mates failed to stand up on some occasions, especially early in the first half, isn't his fault.

I'm not sure how you can say that a guy who got his hands on the ball more than anyone else in the game bar the 2 hookers (which would be expected in just about any game), went MIA - Absolutely MIA. Maybe you need to take your NSW and Broncos glasses off.

And if we're talking about MIA, the whole Broncos team went MIA in the second half.

To say Thurston didn't deserve MOTM, or at the very least 2 points in the Dally M is a joke. Oh but you said it, so it must be true. Silly me!

Yeah agree, he wasn't MIA. He tried too hard for most of the game, took wrong options. Even at the death he went for the glory kick instead of setting for a field goal. They should've had at least 3 tries in the first 15 minutes but the ball went to the wrong people (Bolton, Bani for example).

I'd have given him 1 point, he was the best opposition player and it ended up close. But 2 out of Parker, Norman, Lockyer deserved to fill the top 2 spots. For 60 minutes the Broncos were the better team, and for 25 minutes they were as dominant as the Cowboys were during their comeback.

Parker was better than Thurston.
IMO.
3. Parker
2. Norman
1. Lockyer.

Thurston was making many bad options through out the game besides one good 15 minute period.

far out this forum is blind when it comes to skill on the other team!

norman def shouldve got the 3, but to even suggest thurston was MIA, or poor, shows u either didnt watch the game, you have NFI about league, or u just dont pay attention to the opposition. Im guessing most of the ppl claiming thurston didnt deserve 2 points (or even 1) fit into the latter.

well watching the last 5minutes or so Thurston cost the Cowboys any chance they had to put the nail in coffin. Dumb low percentage plays by a Player some call the best in the world. Prior to that if the game isnt swinging the Cowboys way time and time again Thurston goes for dumb low percentage plays rather then the safe "get back in the game" plays. If it wasn't for Normans little mistake the cowboys would never have got back in and the final score could have blown out to something stupid like 48-8.
