NEWS Shock leader in Broncos captaincy race

ye but the thing there is only one cam smith. no other team in the comp has a cam smith he gets away with shit because he ass kisses the media and greenturd and will probably go down as the greatest footy player we have seen to date. its only recently that the media are starting to turn on him.

i guess we have differant opinions on what a captain needs to be. to me i dont care much if he can ass kiss to referees and be talked up by the media. were the broncos any way remember we get zero favours from any one so whats the point

All i want our captain to be is someone who shows passion and can inspire this young forward pack on the field and by all reports that is lodge
I dont disagree about the passion, inspiration etc. I merely thought that if lodge was given the captaincy, perhaps this would be one of the times a co-captaincy could be an option.

IMO the following would be in front of lodge:

Glenn
Gillo
Haassssss
Fifi
Staggs
Turps

Lodge has too many brain explosion moments and doesn't have the football brain. He cant even keep himself in top shape.

The 5 guys below Glenn in your list have the combined IQ of a banana sundae, little to no chance. Lodge is a reasonable choice because he's got the rare combination of work ethic, desire, mongrel, but can also represent himself well in a conversation (Case and point; his various interviews on Fox)

I would feel much more confident in Lodge than any of the guys on your list, sans Glenn, in being able to not only lead from the front on the field as captain, but also talk amicably with the referees.

I might even have him ahead of Glenn, I think Glenn would be good for leading from the front, but I could see him being almost too friendly & not press his claims hard enough with the referees. There's also a strong possibility he's not in our best 13, so there's that.

Geez. Bit rough on Lodge. Especially coming from a shit **** like Gal. Didn’t you become captain after trying to rip out a players stitches, Paul? Wasn’t this after you racially abused a player? Didn’t you remain captain after being a drug cheat or being involved in a team cheating the salary cap? What about when you dog shot that bouncer, William? Whether Lodge is captain material or not, who are these grubs to comment on it.

Yeah although I agree with what he is saying, it is a bit hard to take from a shunt like Gallen.

Im all for redemption stories, but this isn't a good look from a commercial standpoint, nor do I think he is a good leader. He makes a lot of stupid mistakes, dumb errors and dumb penalties. We need someone with some wits about them as captain.
Tell that to Souths

Dropping Darius & Macca to Q cup or having them move on completely and making Lodgey skipper is my interpretation of Seibs' 'Burn the boats' metaphor to a T.
Great point!

Do not twist my words, i am not inferring he is an idiot or that he is disrespectful to refs, however he does lack some on field discipline and give stupid penalties (i.e holding down penalties, little niggling things).

Working effectively with refs is not just not being disrespectful, it is working out the best way to achieve the best outcome for our team from that specific referee. Some respond to pressure, others respond to a lighter touch and conversations, i dont think lodge has developed the experience to determine which situation calls for which yet.

In the media, you need a well spoken clean skin, or else you and the team look like mugs (i.e. gallen and cronulla).
I implore you to show me where he gives away more than other front row enforcers in the game. He's really not that bad?!

On the 100% footy programme last night, when the question was put forward "should Lodge be Captain of the Broncos?", Gould's first response was "When, now? No". It seems that Gould believes he has the necessary attributes to be Captain but questions the timing of such an appointment.

Given Gould was the only panelist that has ever met Lodge or had anything to do with him, I would value his opinion over the others.

Slater's comments re: Lodge not being Captain at the Roosters or Melbourne are ill conceived, we don't have the same personnel or experience in our roster.

When Weidler asked Gallen who else if not Lodge, Gallen said he had no idea, which is about right! Gallen and Lodge have had a running battle since Lodge arrived at the club, where Lodge shown Gallen to be an inept liability on tired old legs, handing him 4 from 4 defeats.

Yes there will be some conjecture if Lodge is appointed as Captain, but that will happen if he is appointed this year, next year or in five years time. Even a minority of posters on here remain negative towards Lodge, but that will never change, no matter what positives he provides or how exemplary his behaviour...haters gonna hate.

He has shown he can handle pressure and media scrutiny, he's had more than his fair share! He's a former Junior Kangaroos Captain and most importantly he's the person whom the Coach and players believe can best do the job.

From the pre and post match interviews I've seen, he's no fool and seems to have a very good understanding of the game. I'm not sure where the ill disciplined queries come from, again from what I've seen he appears to be the total opposite. As far as dumb penalties go, I think he's given away minimal penalties in the past two seasons. Probably fresh in everyone's memory is the one during the loss to Parramatta which appeared to be a strategic penalty for holding down when our defence was shot. Dumb penalty, I'm not so sure.

It's been said on here many times that Lodge will follow Bennett, Lodge will leave for more money, Lodge will return to Sydney. Despite all those being possibilities, he has committed to us long term. Lodge has said he has unfinished business here. If the Coach thinks making Lodge Captain is the best way to get that business done, then I emplore Broncos fans to embrace that decision, ignore all outside noise and support Lodge, if that'sthe way they go.

To the best of my knowledge Lodge hasn't set a foot wrong since arriving at the club and from what I've heard he's a thoroughly decent bloke. Clearly he's f#cked up, but he's since owned it, made reparations and done some serious work on his personal development. It's a resounding YES for me, make Lodge Captain.

Again. All this "too many brain explosions" narrative is just unfounded and inaccurate

I'll tell you now.

Boyd has been getting smashed in the media this year. Booed at home games and being asked to retire by fans, media, club and coach. And you know what? Players haven't rallied around him, proven anyone wrong. They more than likely agree.

Lodge will get an equal if not MORE amount of hate as captain. More media attention and more damnation. But you can damn well bet that players will rally around him to prove the haters wrong and shut their lips.

I'm all for it.

Mate this post deserves more than just a 'like'. It is so well argued out and shows plenty of thought has gone into it. Well done.

Did laugh when they asked him who should be the new captain of the Broncos.

"Not too fussed tbh, just not Lodge"

Also, didn't really see the point in asking Slater. Didn't Lodge offer to fight Bellamy or something? Even before the NY incident I'm pretty sure Billy would have a bad opinion of him.

Hass and Fifita are nineteen, Staggs is twenty. Turpin has played seventeen games. Are you really standing there with a straight face saying they are better options than Lodge?

Lodge obviously comes with cons, but there are a whole lot more pros, chief of which is that the team does seem to respect him and follow his lead already. Other than Glenn, I think he is clearly the best option.

Other than the obvious, what else might count against him is if the team has identified one of the younger guys, like Carrigan, as a long-term captain. If they give it Lodge now, it's hard to take it off him unless he leaves the club. If you give it to Glenn (or Gillett, although I don't like that option), it makes a transition in a couple of years easier.

I'm fine if Lodge gets it. But I dunno if it is fair on him, even though he's considered the leader of the pack he's still still fairly young and inexperienced and there's a ton of scutiny coming up over the next 12 months.
