NEWS Staggs in strife again

The NRL's Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (aka Integrity Unit) is shit sifting Kotoni Stagg's sauced up antics at the Eatons Hill Hotel over Easter. They have requested CCTV footage hoping to indentify a woman who can help them stitch up Kotoni.

The story currently circulating alleges the NSWelshman was on the turps with his mates before heading to the Eatons Hill Hotel in search of some action. All fine until just before 3am when the Broncos centre mustered the courage to make his move on one of a gaggle of women. Staggs tried his signature move of extending his arm around her but this time it didn't work. The lady nightowl allegedly didn't care for Stagg's advance and asked him to keep his mitts to himself. Bouncers intervened and promptly turfed the highly eligible bachelor out on his ear. And that was the end of that. Until the NRL got wind of it.

So now Kotoni has run afoul of the code's moral guardians 3 times in 12 months. Not a good look for the player holding the entire club to ransom over his contract.

Top NRL Mullah Andrew Abdo said this of his last incident back in February:

“We have issued him with a $10,000 fine and most importantly, he has to complete an education course and he has to meet with me personally and the head of integrity, together with the club CEO, before he is permitted to play again. We want him to understand the impact of his words on people and the responsibility that players have to the community. His language is utterly unacceptable but this is about making sure he understands the impact of that and actually changes."

Education

“There are three components - the fine, the education course and making sure he sits down with us. Getting them to meet with me is not the silver bullet, but I want to explain to them the impact this has on their personal brand, on the club brand and on the game’s brand and then there are two ways they can go from there."

“This is important in relation to Kotoni which is why we want to meet with him before he returns to the field.”

I know one thing. As soon as he is about to sign we have a discussion about how to get him to be the "best player" he can be.
Make a condition of some of that money there are no off field incidents and have him mentored by someone like Hodges, Renouf or the like in the way Civo is with Tevita.
It might not work as he is definitely carrying a chip on his shoulder but you have to try.

Having a gun centre like Staggs is nice, but I'd be happy with just a no frills defensive centre that knows how to put their winger away
We can afford one of Staggs or Coates, but cannot get into a bidding war for both. Better for us to pick one and just commit to that.

Even $600k is high. Let's stop spending up stupidly on Outside Backs and put good money into our spine instead.
If Coates leaves who exactly are we spending big money on in the outside backs other than Staggs?

- Oates deal was done and is set to expire end of next year. He's not getting the same type of deal no matter how good his form runs, as he is setting himself up exclusively as a winger now
- Isaako deal set to expire end of next year and is probably under $500k maybe even under $400k (he signed after his rookie year)... unlikely to be a huge re-signing cost
- Herbie re-signed but unlikely to be huge given the media didn't care about it
- Mead, Copley and Kennar all on cheap deals that end this year
- No talk of re-signing Niu at this stage, but might be a bit of a lower end deal

You're talking like we're the dogs who have spent about $1.5m on three wingers/centers

The Dogs are looking really good for next year though to be fair, they've got a bit of their spine in order, especially if they land B Smith

We are actually in a very healthy position cap wise with backs. Pretty much have a backline sorted for 3.5Mil. Probably one the the best value/healthiest in the comp.

Tell me how much the Storm are spending on Outside Backs outside of their spine (Fullback) ???

The thing is, you need weapons in your backline, you just don't need every player to be one unless you are the Roosters and are playing with an extra salary cap.

Herbie
Coates
Staggs
Oates (when fit and firing)

That is more than enough and then you look for solid first graders to put in around them and as depth. If I had to choose between Coates and Staggs as well, see ya toeman.

They're entirely reliant on Burton coming in and saving them.

Flannigan is flopping hard and Allan has been a failure at fullback after leaving Souths.

To get Bsmith next year they need to trade a similar player to storm or they need to compete with everybody come 2023.

Given Allan has failed at fullback they will be dependent on JAC becoming a revelation at fullback... which seems a little unlikely to me.

So it could end up being Burton carrying the team on his own with no forward pack and a bunch $500k wingers

Not sure what that has to do with you indicating that we shouldn't be over spending on backs when we haven't really been overspending since Kevvie started other than potentially top dollar for our strike center

But in the past they've spent reasonably well on JAC, Vunavalu, Sisa Waqa and Koroibeti. Yes they started low price, but would've been bumped to the $300-400k for their subsequent deals (reasonable deals for the salary cap back then)... Chambers was on $400k (about peak price back in the day for a center).

Not to mention the cash they would've invested in Folau and GI to play center and wing for them at the time

It's when it gets ridiculous that they dont bother to get into a bidding war.

Now they're looking to poach Coates... you'd say that would be somewhere in the $400k-$500k range to get him. Which is peak price for a winger

$300-400keach for JAC, Vunivalu, Waqa and Koroibete. So basically, a lot less than we're paying Oates and a lot less than we're offering to pay Coates and Staggs.

Thanks for proving my point.

Conveniently ignoring that they're offering to pay Coates more than us in order to poach him ie. happy to spend big on outside backs.

Have in the past spent big on GI and Folau ie. happy to spend big on outside backs

Had Chambers as the highest paid center in the game ie. happy to spend big on outside backs

Also not sure what storm have to do with us other than trying to deflect from your original post to a "we should be more like the storm".... even then are we not doing that by not getting into a bidding war for Coates and by not going full titans and out bidding ourselves for Staggs

Right, so they'd 'maybe' spend up on Coates and that's it. JAC out and Coates in. Every other guy in their backline basically earns **** all.

They also apparently spent up big on GI and Folau, both of whom played for them more than a decade ago, both of whom they lost because they didn't get in to a bidding war, and this also occurred during a period of proven salary cap cheating. Very relevant. Again, thanks for proving my point, proving it repeatedly in fact.

They don't waste stupid money on Outside Backs and we should do the same. It's not rocket science.

Tbh, i think Herbie wil do well enough on the wing. Keep Staggs at right center, then just find a solid left center.
