+1. It would def relieve some of the cap pressure temas feel when they have a whole plethora of stars in the game.

Then you'd have clubs who have no origin players, and their players are often overlooked for selection, complaining that they're disadvantaged.[/quote:1b2in4q1]

You can't please everybody can you!!

David Gallop tries. And that's why the salary cap rules fail because they're trying to please the lowest common denominator, which disadvantages clubs like the Broncos and Storm and Bulldogs who have excellent recruitment/scouting/development programs that unearth talent and make them rep players.

It's only a matter of time before clubs realise there's no point spending money developing players, because it's just lost investment when they move on to get more money.

I never thought it would work or have been a fan of it but with no reward for clubs junior development are we better off heading towards an AFL style draft system?

100% yes!! I have always been an advocate of the draft - and I know I will get flamed for saying it doesn't promote junior development etc. but I think we have much to learn from systems used in the AFL and also overseas like the NBA

Who will develop the juniors though???

Bingo.

If the clubs produce juniors only for them to go into the pool, that's even further discouragement from actually doing the development.

Q Cup and NSW Cup clubs are cash strapped (mostly) so they have limited resources.

The draft COULD work, but there'd need to be a massive overhaul when the independent commission came in.

The NRL would have to develop all juniors and I can't see them having a clue how to do it!

Obviously there would have to be a massive overhaul - we would probably have to adopt a system in which there wasn't a Harold Matthews or SG Ball etc. for clubs. But the theory of the draft system is something that has always appealed to me

I agree, but it'd just be a massive shift to the game.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the draft was challenged in court as restraint of a player's trade?

Yeah - another thing to thank Terry Hill for...

I think most of that would come from the fact juniors came through clubs...eg, played junior footy for Wests and so wanted to keep playing for the same club, not be shifted somewhere else.

If it was drastically restructured such that a National Youth competition was made up of regions/divisions etc, and thus not directly club aligned, then there'd be less cause for that. ie, players in that competition are eligible to be drafted into the NRL. Clubs can't directly recruit.

It would probably still need an understanding between clubs, NRL and players association but it could work.

Again, I just can't see it happening.

The draft system is too much work now. It would take so much time and money to develop a system that works. Gallop doesn't have the brains for it either. I like it hoe the Broncos can develop juniors and watch them develop into superstars.

Lol, of course you'd know that.

Why does everyone take cheap shots at Gallop? The bloke can't win.

Has the NRL really improved it's situation over the last 5 years???

People should probably ease up on him a bit, I feel pretty bad for the bloke to be honest. Every time the bloody phone rings he's probably one step closer to a mental breakdown.

Exactly. He's far and away the best administrator this game has had since (gulp) John Quayle
