Talbots payments to Broncos players

Just caught a ch 9 news update on the Nuttal inquiry. I'm a little disturbed by the following quote from the newsroom: "apparently it was common practice for Ken Talbot to give away money, notable benefactors include WB and Broncos players."

The WB payments are common knowledge, and frankly i couldn't have cared less as it wasn't breaking any rules... however, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first I've heard of any players being on the receiving end. If true we could end up hearing a lot more about these..

MINING magnate Ken Talbot regularly gave or lent money to various people, including Brisbane Broncos players and former coach Wayne Bennett, a court has been told.

Mr Nissen described Mr Talbot as a "committed fan" of the Brisbane Broncos and said he had given money to some of the players who regularly drank at his hotels.

He said the players also made regular appearances at the hotels to meet fans.

"These visits from the Broncos attracted customers?" crown prosecutor Ross Martin SC asked.

"Yes," Mr Nissen replied.

Don Nissen.. wasn't/isnt he high up in the Broncos organization?

To me this seems pretty big... it's now on public record that one of our administrators knew of players receiving money outside of the salary cap.

If it's true, I hope the NRL can still fine the Broncos for allowing this to happen. To send a message that this is not acceptable.

Just checked.. Nissen stepped down as Chairman of the Broncos in 2004.

Obviously a lot of facts still to be found out, but agreed, if there is any wrong doing here i hope we get slammed for it.

broncos hav been rorting the salary cap for years,this wldnt surprise most people.how many teams hav as many highly paid stars as the broncos.none.

Shame you don't know any of them personally. They could have swung some coin for books and a High School education your way.

your kidding me, you don't really believe that do you? :roll: as for comparing the Broncos highly paid players to other clubs... just off the top of my head;

Bulldogs: Ryan, Kimmorley, Patten, El Masri, Hannant, Ennis, and possibly Josh Morris
Cowboys: Thurston, Payne, Bowen, O'Donnell, Burns, Kaufusi
Storm: Inglis, Slater, Smith, Cronk, White and Johnson
Manly: Orford, Lyon, Kite, B. Stewart, G. Stewart and Watmough

I can't be bothered going through the rest of the clubs

With the Broncos yes they have reasonably high paid back but the forwards would be on much smaller pay packets

and as webcke said previously our players stayed for a lot less than they could get at other clubs so they could be suuccessful and be coached by Bennett

I'd like to wait and see what the NRL salary cap rules say about it. If the club itself isn't aware of the payments I'm not sure the club can be accused of rorting the cap.

It also says "gave or lent money to...."

If he lent it to them, this indicates to me they paid it back.

But like others, I want to hear the full story before making any judgements
