Which is also nonsense because paying someone more money doesn't improve how good of a player they are.

He single handedly influenced games with every touch.

The anti Melbourne bias is truly on show in this thread
I don’t personally have a bias against the Storm as such, other than the same dislike I have for any team that beats us. But I do absolutely hate teams that benefit from systematic cheating.

The fact they, and in particular Smith, still to this very day argue and claim their titles should be reinstated does make me dislike them as a club more than most other clubs.

And whilst paying one player more may not make them play better; paying an entire team of players more for a number of years certainly doesn’t hurt their success and ability to form a nucleus of players, all the while supporting and nurturing their development in a stable and familiar environment.

Let’s just imagine for one second what might have been had they not cooked their books for a number of years and their players got dispersed much earlier in their development.

I’m not saying they’d be like we have been the last few years, but we are a great example of what happens when the right players and support is not provided to young players, regardless of how good they’ve been in the lower grades or how much potential they may have.

It’s obviously hypothetical, but would any one of those Storm stars have been as good as they were as individual players if they’d been squeezed out of the Storm early on and ended up at a Tigers or Titans etc.?

Who knows. But the point is, the club cheated and I believe it’s a fool’s errand to think such cheating didn’t benefit the club, coaches and players, on a number of levels.

I dont have an issue with Smith really, i think its a bit ridiculous people trying to play down his ability based on a financial decision by his club. IF people think it affects his character thats fair though. What i did never like with him though was that Queensland decision. He left us in the lurch and i thought it was a dog move by him at that time.

In regards to their titles that were taken away, when you look at the cap rorts individually i can see why they think they shouldnt have been taken away. My own opinion on it when you look at other punishments is the 2007 win should never have been taken off them, anything after that i think they deserved. Cronulla didnt lose their 2016 premiership despite them rorting the cap to build that side essentially. As usual with the NRL, there isnt a lot of consistency in their decision making.

You know who i think gets overlooked a fair bit, Sam Thiaday. Peak Sammy was a superb back rower and i think it gets forgotten how good he actually was in his prime.

Also, i'd have put Jharal Yow Yeah in there despite his short career. Cant believe really it will be 10 years since he got that injury in 2022.
Yeah I’ve been watching a few mid 2010 games because the footy was beautiful back then and Sammy was a beast - such a different player to who he ended up. Explosive, Uber aggressive and competitive, good ball playing, amazing hair.

Seems like he mellowed with age and unfortunately what made him good mellowed also.

He reminds of when rockstars go clean and sort their life out and they seem heaps happier but their output sucks.

I think he’s a shoe in if the decade in questions is 2005-2015 but can’t argue that he didn’t make the cut in the last 10.

Not one Bronco...

That is some garbage writing.

It's just some bloke's opinion, and all he's done is pad it out with how many tries each player scored and what awards they won. How about some relevant stats? I don't need to know Matt Scott scored so many tries in so many appearances FFS, he was a prop forward. Tell me about his running metres, tackles, etc.

Low effort article.

Such as Smith, Slater, Inglis, Cronk......?

Absolutely ....although not sure about a bottom 4 team....but then again, I can't remeber any superstar player being in a bottom 4 team for an extended period of time. Hard for any player great/good or otherwise to standout in the competition ...playing in a team of shitcunts.

I know I ramble a bit (perhaps a lot), but if I was to try and put how I feel in a shorter form.

No doubt a really good player, indeed undoubtedly one of the best.

Just a shame his, and his clubs, moral compass point in the wrong direction at times.

I get what you are saying and don’t disagree.

A recent example though could be Tedesco. Are you confident he would be the same player he is now, as well as club and state captain, if he stayed at the Tigers?

I’m not so sure.

I have a bias against the Storm, cannot wait until the day they suck BUT that doesn't get in the way of me acknowledging that Smith is the best player I've ever seen, even better than Lockyer. Unfortunately, I didn't see that much of Wally.

I'm not at all saying Cameron Smith would have or wouldn't have been the player he turned out to be based on how much he was earning, I am saying that his legacy will be that of being a crucial part of a Melbourne team that systematically cheated.

“It’s been a long two-and-a-half years trying to get back on track. You don’t realise how much you’ll miss footy, the club and the boys, until it’s gone. When it’s gone for nearly three years you really feel it and miss it. You hear people say they’re excited to be back but I’m truly really happy to be back and fortunate to have the opportunity to come here with Brisbane. With the scans I’ve had, the risk of me doing it again is just like anyone else doing it. That was a game changer for me when I heard that. There is just as much chance as anyone else getting a brain bleed like I had. I’ve had the noggin whacked a few times and it’s been all good. It’s not what I want to do, running around hitting my head on walls, but to get through that contact stuff is hard to explain. I’m really stoked.”

“When I first had it and got the scans, the doctor said I had a bleed. I was asking how long I’d be out for and if I’d be right for the next game and he said ‘you’ll probably be out for the rest of the year. That was the hardest bit, not being able to play when I really wanted to. I couldn’t go outside, I was sensitive to light so I was locking myself in the room. My parents had to come over and cook me meals. The specialist at the time said they couldn’t pin down what happened. If I got hit in the head by someone they could say that’s what it was from and if you let it heal you’ll be back. But they couldn’t put their finger on how it happened. They went through all the video and I never got a big hit to the head. No one said I’d be out forever and couldn’t play again.”

“I was doing a lot of surfing, pig hunting and fishing, keeping myself busy. But that doesn’t pay any bills so I had to go and find myself a job. We didn’t get along too well — me and working. The only healing I could do for it was to rest. I got a job pushing sand with big machines. It was 12 hours a day sitting down so that healed it pretty well. I did that for a year and then carried on with the scans and it got better with the rest and no contact. The specialist gave me the green light at the end of last year. I’m stoked that’s over because I was pretty much paying rent in the MRI machines. It’s good to get out of those.”

“I’ll take it on-board a bit more. I had a lot of games where I could have done a lot more but I was staying in my safe zone. When I went up to the Cowboys I had people like Johnathan Thurston and Michael Morgan, all you wanted to do was play next to them. You didn’t want to overcall them or anything like that. Now that I’ve been away from the game, you realise you don’t get those chances back. I want to take the opportunity when it comes and make the most of it because it can be gone at any second.”
