Teams for Game II

I have a feeling that Mal isn't gonna make too many changes, i.e. keep Harrison in the team.

Harrison is the first to go.

1. Slater - GI is the form player of the comp at 1, but I don't think moving him is gonna make our team much stronger. What I'd like to see is him and Slater alternate, push Tate or Boyd in.
2. Boyd
3. GI
4. Hodges
5. Tate
6. Thurston (the groin injury clearly hampered him and killed our kicking game)
7. Cronk (worst game I've ever seen him play, he can bounce back)
8. Scott
9. Smith
10. Hannant
11. Myles
12. Thaiday
13. Parker

14. Papalii
15. Shillington
16. McQueen
17. Te'o

Gillett didn't do anything bad, but we need more size and more agression, Hannant and Papalii respectively. McQueen is probably a bit more versatile, but it's a toss of the coin. Papalii is a must, him and Te'o have a fear factor that none of our other forwards possess. The can hit, they run the ball violently and they won't back down. Who would you rather run at; Papalii or Gillett? I know where I'd be headed.

I think DCE on the bench is a waste, he's either 7 or he's not.

Dave Taylor could be a smoky if he keeps playing into form, he was Titans best weekend just gone.

I think qld and broncos especially are starting to really feel the void left by lockyer

1. Inglis
2. Boyd
3. Tate
4. Hodges
5. Slater
6. Thurston
7. Cronk
8. Scott
9. Smith
10. Hannant
11. Myles
12. Teo
13. Parker

14. Shillington
15. Taylor
16. Papalii
17. Barba

out of the whole team, Tate is the LAST person i would consider dropping. the only player out there who genuinely looks like he loves QLD and wants to beat NSW. if theres a line break by NSW, tate is chasing even when hes had to come from 40m across field. if theres a biff, tates the first one in support. i cannot give him enough respect for how he plays when he pulls on the QLD jersey.

Just watch his reaction after smashing Bird!

I think people under estimate that Gillett's defensive mobility and effectiveness (at least it was there last night) is important. I think he should stay there, and I thought his running game was quite strong.

Definitley Papalli for Harrison

I'd rather T'eo than Hannant - he's more aggressive than Hannant, hits harder and is generally meaner, and they are about the same size, but still I'd be happy with Hannant - he usually puts in 110% in Origin

For mine, Inglis has to stay in the centres but alternate with Slater in set plays

Barba for Boyd - I reckon his speed is needed to cover Jennings but somehow I don't see any changes to the team

I'm really concerned for Queensland's future that Shillington and Hannant are the next rung below Matt Scott... really hope Matt Kennedy continues his improvement, and Josh McGuire gets back to where he was a couple of years ago. Front row is looking dodgy for QLD.

Thing with Shillington is that at his best, he can be awesome.

Barba for Boyd is silly. How is his speed going to cover Jennings when he's on the wing and Jennings is on the opposite side of the field?

we dont want gillett there for his defence, thats the thing. defence is one of his weakest points, we didnt choose him because of it. hes there to attack, and in his 4 origin matches hes been utterly useless at it. dunno what mal and co were expecting though - pick someone whos been useless for 18 months, expect to get uselessness.

gillett played his best origin last night, not that thats saying anything. he did a couple of very good runs, a couple of very good tackles, but not enough to justify his selection or future selection IMO.

hannant has to be there because we need another prop. i dont rate hannant that highly, but all we need him to do in origin at this stage is what he does at the broncos - get the ball, tuck it under his arm, run straight. nothing fancy, just make metres and play 40+ minutes in the front row. we lack go forward because we only have 2 props and then some second rowers parading as props, most of which are playing poorly at club level to boot.

totally agree on gillett. he is a bench player, hes meant to come on and bring some aggression and enthusiasm to the team, hes not there to come on just defend. papalii defends BETTER than gillet and has much more attack to his game. add to that his aggression and the way he can man handle players like gallen and its a no brainer. gillett out, papalii in

Only changes I would make is Gillett ans Te'o out and Papalii and Hannant in. I'd move Shillington to the bench and start with Hannant.

Anyone trying to justify dropping Gillett, cannot do it based on last night's game. There is absolutely no base for it, except for a bias and a will to "be right" about how "useless" he is.

Gillett was better than Harrison, Te'o, McQueen, Thaiday and Shillo yesterday, in all aspects of the game, be it defence or attack!
His runs were excellent, but there was no one there to follow up. His defence and line speed were very good too, and he was the only one who put a nice shot on the mother of all grubs, but hey... I guess he didn't turn the game on its head, scored a try and flick passed for another, so he didn't do what some people expected of him... :001_rolleyes:

I'm not dropping Gillett because he was poor I am dropping him because I'd prefer he was fresh for the Broncos. Would happily drop McQueen instead to get Papalii and Hannant in the side.

They most certainly can't take 4 back rowers on the bench again. Parker has to start ahead of Harrison, who should be left right out.
I think, seriously, we need 2 props on the bench - Shillington (Hannant to start if fit) and Lillyman/Kennedy.

That leaves 2 bench spots left, to be shared between Gillett, Te'o, Papaali and McQueen. Of those I prefer the aggression of Te'o and Papaali., though I could accept Gillett for Te'o. He did play well last night.

I agree about Harrison but the likelihood of it happening is pretty slim.

there is though. hes an impact player whos supposed to come on and spark our attack. he didnt do that at all. he made 1 memorable tackle, whoopdeedoo.

yes he was better than thaiday, but i want thaiday gone too. be realistic though - thaidays not getting dropped until he retires. was gillett better than teo? i dunno, much of a muchness to me. teo came on and made a few fantastic runs, and didnt let anyone down in defence. he was more of an impact than gillett.

i think they should drop mcqueen and gillett off the bench, we just have too many second rowers and those 2 are the most expendable IMO. teo is MUCH more aggressive than gillett, and thats what we need against this NSW team.

That's an entirely different matter mate, which has to do with Origin scheduling and needs to be addressed asap.

As far as Origin 2 goes, I'd have Hannant or Lawrence for McQueen, and Harrison left right out for Papalii, with Parker moving to 13.

I disagree, I think he had the best hit-ups of any Qld forward, bar Parker. That nothing came of them is not his fault.
Besides, the other thing he has better than pretty much anyone else, is his line speed. He is there first, and sometimes it costs him a missed tackle because there is no one else to help, but more often than not, he hits well and the player stays down.

Yes, Te'o is an aggressive player, but Gillett can be too, although that seems to have been coached out of him a bit.
Anyway, I would keep both and remove McQueen and Harrison, and bring another hard hitter in Papalii and a good working prop in Hannant or Lawrence, although like you say, that realistically ain't gonna happen for Harrison...
