Bowling too quick seems to be common amongst Aussie spinners, especially the wrist spinners. I think one of the biggest failings of Smith, and in the past White, is the pace that they bowl at.
Warney was almost exclusively in the mid 70's when he was bowling well, and that's when he got that drift in and turn away happening. These days, Leggies are throwing them down with a rushed action and speeds in the high 80's to even low 90s at times. It's like they're afraid of being hit and just trying to get it down the other end with plenty of heat and spin on the cherry.
Even when Doherty was bowling today, I thought there was notable difference in the quality of his deliveries when he slowed them up a bit, giving the ball a chance to drift and get better grip off the road.
