The Ashes Discussion

He is in horrible form. It would be pointless putting him up against Anderson, Broad and co.

Threw him in v South Africa under lights.

Anderson v Australia in Australia 43 wickets at 38.44. Two 5-0 pumpings. 1/108 in Adelaide and dropped, 5 wickets at 86 in 06/07!

Anderson would have been good for Renshaw.

I just can’t make head or tail of this, like did they literally sit down late last night and realise they had to pick a side?

So many double standards, it is the very definition of incompetence.

Let's not gloss over the enormity of this Paine selection. We're picking a guy that can't keep for his state to keep in a Test.

Since Paine last played a Test he has averaged 24 with the bat in Shield cricket.

16/17- 26.00
15/16- 6.85
14/15- 17.76

So it isn't his batting that has got him in. Must be his keeping? No he isn't the Tasmanian keeper he's the first slip.

23 dismissals in the last three years for Tasmania. He played Futures League a few weeks ago and four games last year too (55, 49, 99, 5 and 120). At least he was captain of the seconds last month. Tasmania came last and won one game yet he couldn't make the side.

This is the biggest selection call. If it comes off it's the greatest call ever but you have to wonder if it fails what do the selectors do?

The only logic behind Paine, that I can think of, is to take pressure off Marsh who would have been attacked mercilessly in the media and public, and for good reason. And just lol if they hide Marsh at six, what a disgrace.

Maxwell did nothing wrong but has still been dropped for a 34 year old non-incumbent who is currently averaging less than him this shield season.

Edit: what do the selectors do if Paine fails? Pick Nevill who scored three tons last shield season and is Paine’s equal with the gloves. If his papers are stamped because he’s not vommiting out horrendous ‘banter’ in between balls and isn’t mates with Smith, then Carey who has the shield record for dismissals in a season. If they don’t think Carey is a good enough batsman (they can’t argue this after picking Paine), then give Bancroft the gloves.

It is an absolute disgrace. Someone in one of the articles or comments mentioned that guys like Cowan can't get a game for their state because they are 'too old' and CA has given the directive to go in a younger direction. Meanwhile, Marsh (who is the same age) has been picked over younger guys who are all performing better or at least on par in Maxwell (incumbent), Cartwright and Lehmann. I bet if Agar was fit, he would have been picked over Lyon because goodness me, how dare we tick off WA cricket for some reason. If they go in a batting all-rounder direction later in the series when this inevitably goes wrong, MMarsh scored more than 10, so better rush him back in as well.

And they wonder why talented young players are picking AFL over this ridiculous rubbish and interest in test cricket is waning.

This reeks of jobs for mates. Not going to write the boys off but FMD this could get ugly

Marsh 236 runs at 39. (3 50's)
Maxwell 200 runs at 40. (2 50's)

The argument he is averaging less is a bit weak.

They've obviously sided with what they think is the stronger bat. The bowling all rounder isn't viewed as needed. Under Smith 23 Tests, 3713.1 overs the allrounder has bowled 242 or 6%.

Marsh, Henriques, Cartwright, and Maxwell have taken 21 wickets for 884 runs at 42.

Batting wise in those 23 Tests. The allrounder has scored 686 runs with one 50 and one 100. The average is 22.13.

We are backing the quicks and Lyon to get the job done. That's the most interesting part if Starc and Cummins who are together for the first time break down or we have a injury we are in serious trouble.

Both sides can make a serious statement here. Cook and Root can cut off the Australian weapon game one or Australia could destroy England and they never recover.

The selectors have backed the bowlers and said no back up, get it done.

Renshaw was only a panic selection after the side being humiliated in Hobart. He scored some runs against a terrible Pakistan side but overall, he hasn't been anything special. He was never going to be there for the long haul. Once his form deserted him, the Aussie selectors were always going to look around for someone who scored at a better rate than 30. But he has youth on his side and he may get another shot in the future.

Yeah all this is all well and good but how much of that all-rounder statistic is skewed by MMarsh? The guy is a walking injury, so doesn't really bowl much. I would have preferred Cartwright myself but would have been completely ok with Maxwell who has been getting better or Lehmann who is younger and better than Marsh.

Maxwell coming in to cover for an opener instead of Renshaw pretty much signals that Matt isn't getting back in any time soon. He needs to buckle down and score some first class runs for a couple of years before he's considered again I reckon.

Shaun Marsh's batting average for each of his residences in the Aus Test team: 1 56.80 2 2.83 3. 48.00 4. 40.67 5. 1.00 6. 77.67 7. 57.75 8. 18.88.

Shaun Marsh's disjointed Test career: In 3 Out 3 In 4 Out 23 In 2 Out 4 In 5 Out 3 In 1 Out 3 In 2 Out 6 In 2 Out 5 In 4 Out 2 In ??

In 23. Out 49.
