This is even more ridiculous than choosing Handscomb as a specialist keeper.

Renshaw was picked 12 months ago on the back of some pretty low SS scores. Then Australia were abysmal in Hobart and he got 100 against South Australia and he was picked. Before that 100- 10, 22, 30, 39, 31 and 5.

In the game he got 31 and 5- Bancroft got 171- no one mentioned his name.

His career SS average is 36 and his Test average is 36. He's doing exactly what he was doing 12 months ago. They've put 12 months of work into him and in his 10 Tests he has scored 3 50's and a 100. Why would you discard him now?

  3. 161 not out at stumps for Bancroft.

    Get him in.

Happy to give Renshaw the first test to make or break him. If he fails, Bancroft to opener and Cartwright or Maxwell in to 6.

    Bailey today 102 of Tasmania's 172.

Not the most in Tasmania's history; Boon 64 of 102 in 1985.

He does have a 5/5 100% Ashes winning record too.

Renshaw's 16 was Queensland's third highest score today. He's not in terrible form.

Not sure Bancroft is a #6 tbh. It's opening or nothing IMO. He's a stayer.

I agree, he's mentally very tough, last week he was on the field for all but the last two hours of the four days. I said somewhere else about his double 100 for WA to get them in the Shield Final he batted for 13 hours. He's tough both mentally and physically. It depends what you want from that six. I don't like guys having defined roles; you need guys that can adapt. He might be able to sure up that middle and the second new ball if things go wrong.

He's great defensively probably the best in the country, if the ball is moving or Ali is causing problems he will hold it out and bat with the tail.

I reckon Renshaw is done after today. Open with Bancroft, choose between Lehmann and Maxwell (Cartwright hasn't done enough to force his way into the side) and replace Wade with any other keeper in the shield.

  11. 30 odd not out for Carey at the moment, if he goes on to make a big 50 or even 100, that'll make the keeper battle interesting, especially with Wade & Nevill continuing to fail to make any runs.

  12. Renshaw hasn't made it past 20 in his last 9 innings. I'm all for giving people who've played decently for Australia additional chances, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if they just don't name him at all for the Ashes series, he needs more time clearly. Bancroft looks ready now.

Or maybe he's scored a century and three 50's from his last 10 Tests? Lovell and McSweeney from the U17 and U19 got a net too against the Australian bowlers.

They must be going to get picked for the Test as well; or maybe they needed batsmen for the bowlers?

These same selectors were hailed as cricket geniuses 12 months ago when the Renshaw bandwagon was taking off.

It depends how the rest of the side takes shape, but if Maxwell is dropped for someone like Cartwright, who isn't in form himself, then it's shocker. Even if Bancroft displaces Maxwell it's a bad call because both he and Renshaw are incumbents, however Renshaw is in horrible form and Bancroft is performing as an opener so is competing directly for his spot in the side.

All that aside, someone's performance in the nets shouldn't be used as a justification, just be honest with the public.

  16. 46 not out for Carey.. Keeping the selectors on their toes.

I would say it is looking increasingly likely that this is where it’s at:

    1. Warner
    2. Bancroft/Renshaw
    3. Khawaja
    4. Smith
    5. Handscomb
    6. Maxwell/Cartwright/Lehmann in that order of likelihood
    7. Carey/Bancroft
    8. Starc
    9. Cummins
    10. Lyon
    11. Hazelwood

I’d say Bancroft is in but the question is where.
