The Jury is out: Matt Gillett

But it was a good line that he ran. Yes he stuffed it but the opportunity was an opportunity because of his running. On Wednesday night I saw what I believe is the beginning of the guy starting to believe he belongs at that level and I am confident he will have a massive game in Sydney.

Even if Gillett caught that ball, Jennings tackled him short of the line. He was covered by the defense, he wasn't going to score.

Why are there no calls to drop Guerra? If he passed the ball to Inglis, he is left one on one with a blues defender and you would back Inglis to run over the top of him and score.

These are both great points, but don't worry I have been assured there are no agendas against gillett so it's all good

what brought this thread on?

i like gillett and think he's a good player. i dont think he's as good as he's been made out to be, with australian selection and basically walk up starting spot in the qld back row.

Sorry nt, I completely disagree with this. His performances, errors notwithstanding prove otherwise. Put him in the Roosters, Manly or Dogs sides and you would see the real Matty Gillett. Even Mal needs a wake up call

well you bring the coach into it then you could say the same about half or more of our team. (and i agree)

Yeah, a lot of our players would improve under a decent coach. Gillett (and Glenn) would go much better at a team that uses their hole runners, like the Roosters.

i wasnt trying to diss gillett i just think he's more at 'fringe origin' stage rather than starting back row right now. super talented player

He only started because Thaiday was out.

McQueen however... it boggles the mind how he is a starter even when there are no injuries!

I also find it funny when people who want Gillett out, suggest to replace him with... props!

we have killer backrowers, some of the deadliest in thaiday and gillet that are being wasted as just hack work. they need to be hitting holes on the edges and be running at the oppositions backs all game.

Like I said earlier, I'd drop McQueen and Te'o before Gillett (Te'o because he's going to Jap Rugby apparently), but why is that funny? We have too many back rowers and not enough props, obviously you replace a back rower with a prop.

The thing that excites me most about Gillett is not his running, ballwork or defence. It's his instinct. He has a magical ability to read the game in a way others can't. Yes he misses tackles that he should make, but he also makes a lot of tackles nobody else can because he reads the situation so much better. It's also evident in attack -- he reads the games and has off the charts instincts, which is why he has a better career strike rate than Josh Hoffman. He knows where to put himself -- I reckon 30% of his career tries have come from being the guy supporting a line break or an offload.

I would say he has a bit of gamble in defence at times which causes the good and the bad in defence. Evidenced by flying out of the line to stop a movement but also letting them come through inside him.
He is a must in the team for me though.
I would flick Papali for a prop and McQueen for Thaiday

McQueen out for Lillyman, Lawrence or even Hannant (if he keeps up his progression) is all I would change for now.

I don't believe Taylor will ever be willing to do the hard work required to be an Origin player, so he's a write off for me. Te'o is going away as you said, leaving us with: Parker, Thaiday, Papalii, Gillett and Guerra as the only noteworthy Qld backrowers. Hopefully Oates will come along as well soon...

We could always use McGuire in the backrow.

I've always felt that's where he belongs anyway..

For sure lock is his position. Good workrate and aggressive. Would be a handful following the runs of a couple of big boppers up front

McGuire should certainly be playing Lock, as soon as possible, I don't think he's a prop, too short and not enough leg drive, great defensively though.

(2017ish)

8. -
9. McCullough
10. -
11. Oates
12. Gillett
13. McGuire

Really hoping some of our younger props put their hand up sooner rather than later, Wallace / Molo / Ofanghuheauheuahuaehe

Mitchell Dodds

Dodds also strikes me more as a lock than a prop. It sucks that he's injured, I thought he was starting to come good just like Copley did.

Did Webcke strike you guys as a lock too?
