The Jury is out: Matt Gillett

Dodds is a gun defensively; his technique is flawless, but he's a powerpuff running the ball though. He strikes me as a Fensom type of player, absolute unit in the middle of the field who runs the ball occasionally. Having Dodds play Prop and asking him to take the hit-ups just isn't the type of player he is.

If memory serves me correctly he WAS a back-rower we converted into a Prop. I know he played Centre for Iona College in rugby union.

Did Webcke strike you guys as a lock too?

Webcke, without sounding like I'm insulting the great man, had the mind of a front rower. Run hard, run straight, relentlessly. But that also suited the era. Now you need to ball-play a little. offloads + steps etc, which is what locks did a little more. A guy like Webcke dominated the pre-wrestle game that only used mostly 1 or 2 defenders. Also with giants like the Burgii and fair number of wingers and centres (Vidot for example) around now, Webcke would not be considered one of the 'big men', hence why guys like Moose and Dodds (the same size as Webcke) are thought of being better at Lock as they aren't 6ft 5 and 120kg

Disclaimer: I realise there are A LOT of people bigger than the guys I named that played 2nd row/Lock i.e. Miles, Carlaw, Tunza, Thaiday, Parker(ish) and so on.

Yeah Dodds played all of his debut year in the back row.

Most of his short career he struggled taking the ball forward but in his last few games before injury he started to push through the line. I don't know what the change was but it was impressive given that he is good defensively. Some players seem to excel as a pair and I believe McGuire and Dodds are two of these. They just seem to compliment each other.

i am not sure in which position he started but he played prop in 2008 U20s. Regardless many players convert to other positions and I don't see that as a problem. Case in point Gene Miles

Re: Wayne Bennett confirmed as 2015 coach of Brisbane Broncos

When did you all realise gillett is a useless defender? Myself and AP have said this for ages but all we got was arguments on here. Now all of a sudden you all realise it?

Most fans knew he was a pretty ordinary defender but were willing to forgive it because he came up with big plays that most second rows in the competition were incapable of pulling off.

Doesn't make players like that useless, Gordie was like that too but had to be kept around because of what he was capable of.

Only reason so many are speaking out is because he obviously had the worst game he's played all season since the Cowboys match in R9.

Let's leave it there. This is the Bennett thread after all, not the AP & QUEENSLANDER agenda thread. I'm pretty sure there's some 'let's bag Gillett thread out there' somewhere which you can bump up.

No no no BP. Gillett should be in Qcup. True story!

Yes, he definitely needs to get his defense worked on, although he has always been good on the left and was quite good in Origin, but people pushing this agenda totally ignore the talent and how good he can be when on song.

Re: Wayne Bennett confirmed as 2015 coach of Brisbane Broncos

Gillett's offense hasn't been anywhere near as brilliant this season compared to the last couple of years as well, to be fair, he's been working hard, just a whole lot less of those individual brilliance plays we became accustomed to 1-2 seasons back.

Re: Wayne Bennett confirmed as 2015 coach of Brisbane Broncos

I do have some concerns about Gillet's defence, but I also have concerns about his mental toughness and concentration.

He seems to be about to have another post origin form slump which appears to be partly (and a strong part) caused by a lack of mental toughness and the ability to tough things out.

I know that playing league at anytime, but particularly at this level is hard but he just strikes me sometimes that he has that lack of a hard edge. Another one that appears to suffer from this is Maranta. He makes an error and drops his head, loses confidence and then you know you are in for a bad night with him. He should put it behind him, and then strive to make up for the error in the next 2 o3 plays he is involved in.

I would disagree that Gillett's offense has not been as good as other years, I would even say it has been better, although it has dropped off in the second half of the season.

And my apologies to the admins for posting in the wrong thread.

Agree to disagree, I think it's been worse overall.

He was good pre-origin, I'll agree to that.

I remember reading people saying his defence was good because he rushed out of the line, lol.

His defence has generally always been horrible, though he has done better this year (up until the Storm game at least).

I disagree with that.

Outside of a soft effort on Foran, I thought Gillett played well against Manly at Suncorp.

Thought he backed that up against the Raiders, playing a hand in the opening try which gave Brisbane the ascendency.

He only played a few minutes against the Warriors, so it's difficult to judge him on that.

And he didn't play another game for Brisbane until the game on Friday night which was his worst.

Last time Gillett put in a performance like that, he put on a near MotM performance against the Titans so let's hope he steps up against Manly.

His offense is what got him into the Australian team this year. Also someone said earlier he has the worst defense in the NRL but did you guys watch Luke Brooks effort today?

Brooks was injured.
