The Jury is out: Matt Gillett

What are people struggling with here?

Is Gillett on the same level as Tallis? No

Are they similar style players? Yes

Go back and watch the matches - Tallis was patchy in defence and was usually good for one costly error or two.

Can't believe I've had to repeat that for a second time.

He was nowhere near Gilletts level of defensive incompetence.

Mmm, debatable.

Gordie could be very poor in that department which was my point. The only difference is, we don't have the benefit of reviewing his stats week in/week out or being able to re-watch his games. The few I've seen, it's really stood out to me and it's been disappointing because the Raging Bull was the type of player who got me into the sport

Gilletts main problem in defence is his tendency to rush up out of the line to try and make the tackle. If he misses the player, it always creates an overlap. Between him and Alex Glenn, their defence is no where near what a second rowers defence should be. Next year when Bennett comes to club will be interesting because he doesn't tolerate 2nd rowers who cant tackle regardless of what they can do in attack.

Not that my opinion means that much, but to say that Tallis and Gillet are similar players is ridiculous. Gordo played with a massive intensity, was a far stronger who's game was all about aggression. Gillet plays to a complete different set of skills he is illusive, quick and showy. But Gordo before the injury was devastating to other teams, to put him with Gillet is silly, I doubt any player in the league is scared of him. He reminds me more of a young brent tate more then anything, lots of good and a lot of silly shit.

My point was that they're similar in so much that they're players with similar flaws but they also play for the big moment.

I didn't say anything about them being identical or on the same level.

People should read through the thread before putting words in others mouths. That's the last I'll say on it.

Everyone's opinion counts around here mate, but if you want to not be taken the wrong way maybe you should actually read the thread and what the posters have said, not just respond using rubbish other posters have deliberately taken out of context to stir people up.

Big Pete simply said that Gordy and Gillett's defensive problems were similar. He never even suggested they were the same style player or anything like that

To be honest our whole defensive line is slow, staggered and lazy, teams seem to be able to push through and carry us to get a few extra meters, we have been conceding so many meters in defense its ridiculous.

My biggest gripe with Gillett tho is his hands, he runs some great lines and into holes but then puts down the pass.

.

this is what I was commenting on mate, the style of players comment. I understand that they both make mistakes and are good for big plays. I was reading it as they play in a similar way. Haha Tallis was my Idol and to be honest and I am not very sold on Gillet, could be great or could be a didn't quite turn out type player. I get the point your trying to make though and will leave it at that.

Fair enough mate, I was just trying to summarise what I wrote days ago that fans misunderstood without having to write what I specifically wrote.

Maybe his ball control when taking on the line at speed could use some work but I feel he has improved dramatically from a couple of years ago in the attacking zone when he making silly errors because he was trying to play make as well as run hard lines.

no worries, I should of went back and had a read.

I watched Tallis' whole ARL/NRL career and I can't see how anyone could say they had similar defensive problems. Tallis didn't go zooming out of the line every other tackle.

And isn't that something that should be relatively easy to correct? Why is this still happening?

One of the biggest Broncos problems in the Griffin era, has been our line speed and ruck defense. I'd argue that Gillett is one of the biggest victims of this.
Regardless, you don't kick a talented player to the curb when you can take advantage of that talent, as long as you work on his deficiencies.

You of all people, with your insistence on Dave Taylor, who has far worse brain snaps in both attack and defense, should be able to acknowledge this, or is the agenda cloud too thick for you to view it?

my insistence on dave taylor? i dont have any insistence on QLD picking taylor. i wanted them to give him 1 game, tell him "this is it, perform or youre done", and see how he goes. they did that, he played well apart from throwing 1 loose pass - which, before you say was game defining, came after 2 knock ons by gillett in almost as many sets of 6 - and they picked him again. i dont agree with heaps of decisions in the QLD selections for this year, but i in no way insisted that taylor shouldve been selected.

youd think so but it obviously isnt.

LOL AP, that won't fly... it was game defining and you know it. It gave NSW possession in our half in the last 10 mins and allowed them to control the game until the end. Gillett had one knock on in an attacking position, as the other was a clear strip for mine, he also didn't have brain fades, missed tackles or rushes out of the line, which tells me that he is actually able to follow instructions.

I don't think people are actually taking the time to address his deficiencies, like those rushes out of the line, and I believe WB will at least fix that.

Just for clarity purposes, do you see potential in Gillett, or do you think we should just get rid of him?

wont fly? you say that wont fly but you just dismiss gilletts 2 knock ons! lol. if gillett hadn't have knocked on previously then taylors pass doesn't even happen! like i said before, if we didnt have bloody mcqueen on the wing when taylor throws that pass then our winger is streaking down the sideline untouched with only a cover tackle from the fullback to beat. the play was on, but having a second rower on the wing is what screwed it up.

Gillett also did rush out of the line a fair few times.

I see potential in him for sure, loads of it. i see a dumb head on his shoulders though, one that either doesnt listen to instructions or just flat out doesnt learn. i think we should give him 1 more season and then let him go if he keeps up his turnstyle defense and butterfingers. second rowers are supposed to be your tackling machines keeping the middle tight, yet he consistently is at the top of the missed tackle count.
