The Thurston myth

Agreed Coxy. Besides Thurstons little show and go.. he was pretty average. Smith looked just as average. Too busy organising the forwards. **** if Prince was there... now that would be a show to see. Smith can worry about his own game and so can Locky.

I don't know how Fien is in first grade let alone a test 5/8. NZ are mad letting Witt rot while Fien is there with errors on every play.

Witt is just as rubbish. Did you mean Warriors or Kiwis? Cause I doubt Witt would qualify for the Kiwis.

Moot point anyway, he's playing Yawnion this year.

I meant the Warriors. He was going pretty good for the second half of last season I thought.

So Coxy how are you going to find a way to bag Thurston after his performance in the test tonight?

You're a fool.

Thurston is an amazing player who has much, much more than just the show and go - in particular he has an excellent creative kicking game, especially short kicks along the ground for his speed men and brilliant vision.

Amazing. Pffft. All he did tonight was his show and go. That's ALL he has. Not a halfback's arsehole.

Yeah, Thurston is very ordinary. He scores tries and wins games, but that's ALL he has. QLD should drop himand play Steve Michaels at halfback

x 2 Coxy - the only thing I could believe was the kiwis fell for the completly obvious show and go for his first try. Not saying Thurston is crap but IMO Prince just brings a lot more to the table.

Coxy, tell me. If all thurston is, is a show and go, why the hell havent the opposition caught on yet? Its quite obvious he has a much bigger arsenal than that, and thats why they cant just focus on shutting down the worlds best dummy thrower. As for the prince vs thurston debate, i think it should be prince vs locky fighting for that last spot, but truth of the matter is thats not going to happen. Locky and thurston are the halves for Australia, just like slater is the fullback, and thats what we will see come origin.

pretty sure of yourself there young man [eusa_eh

i think it will be like last year, slater named at fullback, but meninga will move them, altho then the selectors just named that for game 3 so who knows. either way, slater will be playing most of the game at fullback thats for sure

At least the sideline will be getting alot of good quality ball.

What do hodges and the QLD bench have in common?

They both see Hunts arse alot

I like Thursto but he didn't play a halfbacks game tonight. Tries are not a measure of a players ability in a certain position.

How many tries was it tonight Mr Cox?

Played great. Not a halfback's game though.

Works great for a team like the Cowboys with bugger all attacking ability outside him, Bowen and Payne.
For Queensland he becomes an impediment to the brilliance of Lockyer, Smith, Inglis and Slater/Hunt. He's best when he plays for himself, and Queensland doesn't need that.

Prince for Origin halfback.

But really there's no such thing as a halfback anymore, in the pure sense of the word.

There's two halves or receivers who distribute the ball and create plays pretty much, half back and 5/8 are more or less interchangeable.

Why is Thurston an impediment to Qld though? It doesn't make sense!

Because Cameron Smith does all the organization, just like he does for Melbourne, since Cooper Cronk isn't a halfback either. It works because Cameron Smith plays like a halfback from dummy half and Lockyer and Thurston play 5/8ths on either side of the ruck (both at first receiver though).

Cameron Smith's best attribute is his organization...his passing off the ground isn't as great as some of the other hookers in the comp. If you have Prince there, they'll either clash or Smith will be way less effective (sort of like in last year's series).

LOLZ! Whilst I will give Coxy the benefit of admiting throughout his entire Anti-Thurston campaign he has never claimed JT isn't a great player, rather that he is a 5/8th, I have noticed the last 48 hours have been hard for Coxy to watch. So much so, he has had to change his Facebook status.

LOLZIPOPS!!!!

I know what Coxy is doing, he is simply trying to emulate the brilliance of THAT call made by the last BHQ member claiming JT is anything but sheer brilliance!

I just hope Queensland isn't behind the 8 ball at any stage this year, because judging by Thurston's "efforts" when his team has been behind this year he's been shithouse. Losing the plot, brain explosions etc.
LOLZ, plenty of brain explosions when he was behind against the inform Dragons (who I noticed touched us up).

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Kiwis win on Friday night that Thurston's rep career will be over.

Marshall isn't a halfback either, yet NZ picked him at 7. Halves are halves these days and like most of BHQ I agree that the halves positions are interchangeable these days. FTR;

- Prince = great
- Locky = God
- Thurston = demi-god at rep level

Until there is a major form slump (preferrably in a Rep game) or injury, I rather Locky/JT. The beauty of QLD atm, is as soon as one is injured, we lose nothing brining in the other. Although here is some food for thought; Prince hasn't played very well at Origin level yet. He looked decent in the first half of Game 3 but got broken, hence is still unproven.

QLD- 6. Locky 7. JT
NSW- 6. Campese 7. Wallace

Someone make sure the boys club don't pick that halves combo!

I agree with a lot of the sentiment here about Thurston not being a true halfback but there aren't many left, Prince relies on drifting sideways and then using the show and go just as much as Thurston and they have similar kicking games. Smith does a lot of organizing just like many of the better hookers in the game now. The modern game has evolved and we see 9's play like a 7-9 and both halves play as 6-7 either side, both taking the sides attacking options whilst the hooker does the organizing. Smith, Ennis, Farah, Friend, Payne, De Gois to name a few all do this for there halfbacks to varying degrees and relieve varying amounts of organizational pressure off the halves.

On Thurston, he has to be the QLD 7 end of story. We don't need a "halfback" nor would we get much more of one with Prince there, sure he plays more structured but that is rendered near useless with Lockyer and Smith there. I believe Origin is about moments and players who can create/complete/steal/punish in those moments are who you want especially if you have a hooker who will have the pack running in the right direction, Thurston lives in the crucial moments and to this point in his career seems to go better in big games when big plays are needed. The QLD Backline has to be the Australian backline and it would be an insult if it was anything but it.
