Q-CUP The tragic tale of Corey Oates

I’m not a footy player, so I can’t speak to thought behind players being picky over what position they play.

If you’re good at wing, have been selected for rep sides there, and have become a somewhat focal point of attack ... just stay there? You’re a lock-in selection, and you get to do what I imagine is the most enjoyable part of playing, scoring tries.

I understand the pay difference, but hell if Corey stayed the same level he was at his peak, I’d have no problems giving him 500-600k a year to do that.

the grass isn’t always greener, even on the same field
I would be wrapped to take 300-400k for 10 years. Do something i enjoy. Play with my mates, and have great stories to tell in my later years. Swim between the flags folks. Sure, shooting for the stars is great in the movies, but they are just movies. Be who you can be folks, stop trying to be something your not...next is Milford. Love the wake up call for the broncos. A lot of entitled players

He was for a long time my favourite player. He has just regressed so so badly but man, I so desperately want him to come good. I hope he gives it his all and has a bit of a career renaissance for us.

It's sad. Oates was one of the best wingers in the comp. What happened.
2015-2017 with those magical one handed launching put downs and galloping down the sidelines for a length of field try. so fucking good

A lot of his tries were directly related to the form of darius boyd and milford though... when those 2 didn't fire, corey's tries dried up which probably sapped his confidence as well. then the dropsies started occuring frequently and it just kept snowballing from there.

For the first time in 153 games, it looks like the mighty are about to fall. Corey Oates was not named in the top 21 for the Round 1 game on Friday with no murmurs of injury to mention. A clean no apologies given chop straight to reggies.

I could almost weep for how much of a nosedive Corey's career has taken in recent years. Sure he has never had the greatest hands since the first day he legged his 110+ kilo frame 90 metres up field to score, but that was always his problem. For the longest time he was a coin flip of a player, the next Gene Miles one day then up and in dropsycunt the next. We all (myself included) predicted huge things for him, and in certain respects he has gone places, taking no small role in QLD's dynasty for a time. Where oh where has that Corey gone?

Nowadays, he is one badly out of form liability. If we're being honest, being chopped straight out of the top 21 days out from Round 1 despite being such an experienced player is a damning place to be as a player. His 153 games aren't even valuable enough to drag him into injury coverage, in a side that is drastically missing experience.

This has all the hallmarks of a chasm of a gap between player and club existing at the moment. I said it in another thread earlier today, but I am 90% certain 2021 will be Oates last year as a Bronco. We're just going to have to write him off as being the same sort of sour egg that Roberts was (is). Being exposed to the piss poor example set by the likes of Boyd in the final years of his career can't have helped much either. I mean fair dinkem, if you can't even show the sort of fire in your belly winning the spoon would ignite to make the Round 1 side, the clock is ticking its last.
Look, I don't disagree with your thoughts on the whole here but is it really necessary to heap blame on Boyd for Oates poor handling? Seriously? Boyd didn't set a bad example and accomplished a great deal more in the game than Oates has so far. I'm not upset by your criticism of Boyd but it's a stretch to try and link Oates poor form and fall from grace. I mean Milford could be placed in the same boat if blame is being shifted from it's correct place, Oates shoulders.

I sort of agree slightly that Boyd blatantly having a laugh for the last 3 years ha seriously fucked up half our squad. It’s evident, to all of them the game is just a game and none of them care. That’s why as soon as it gets tough, they fold.
Fucking pathetic excuse for a club at the moment and the only way we will fix it is by dumping 20+ of the players in our 30 and replacing them with literally anyone who actually gives a **** and wants to be there.

Whens the last time Oates has been outside a REAL center?

Jack Reed and Copley were the only decent centre’s he’s had. Moga was a massive ball hog but at least back then Boyd could throw a cut out pass. Shiba didn’t get the ball often and dropped it when he did. The only thing he got to do that season was catch the highball which is clearly his least favourite part of playing on the wing. I hope Kevvie can get him back in form at either position but some time in QCup is probably the best way to go about it.

That “it’s just a game” BS from Boyd was such a bad example for the younger players, yes it is just a game to the park footy boys and girls but this is your job, no one else gets to say oh it’s just “my job” if you were putting in half arsed efforts you’d get canned with that attitude. If it was his way of trying to get the players to relax he went about it entirely wrong, get a hobby don’t read nrl related news and spend lots of time with your close support group.

I hope that Kevvie makes an effort to go and watch the guys in ISC as well... or send out the assistants to go and watch them.

It will just give the players some reassurance that they're not out in the wilderness because they didn't make the 17 on game day.

We've also got guys like Piakura, etc. looking to make a jump to the main squad... and will get some confidence in having the assistants keeping tabs on them

I noticed on the news yesterday that Petero was over having a chat to Dearden, likely after he found out he wasnt starting.

Having some of these old heads around the squad telling them to stay hungry and humble will do the world of good.

Also the Friday BBQ will be great with the Renoufs and what not coming in to give them a pat on the back.

haha fucking hell. Everything is Boyd’s fault. Can’t believe he caused Covid too

not everything ... just the fact that he was shit the last two; and the flow on effect to players who needed him to not be shit. (like Oates, who many of his tries came of the back of Boyd not being shit)

We really have to (collectively, but also particularly the club and the players) stop this looking to blame someone else for the deficiencies of a player. The player should own their limitations and mistakes and work to minimise or ideally completely negate them.

Or buy a project car or two, and then you have no money, no spare time and a never ending money pit which forces you to work harder.

Q cup is where Corey should have been 18 months ago.
More then happy for him to go elsewhere.

That's just it though, the money IS a big deal and a pretty big difference.

$600k is huge money for anything other than an absolutely elite Winger like Radradra, and even then, you'd question whether that was honestly the best use of your salary cap and those funds. Highly likely that Oates would struggle to consistently command elite dollars like that for very long.

Compare that to Backrowers and even fairly mediocre ones are commanding that sort of money all the time, with the best ones earning significantly more than that. In Fifita's case it's actually more than twice as much.

I'm not saying Oates is likely to get anywhere near that, but in his mind he's likely thinking that as he ages, it's far easier to be a mid tier Backrower collecting $600k probably all the way up to retirement rather than having to stay at an absolutely elite level of Winger just to scrape into earning that sort of cash, which gets much harder to do as he gets older and slower.

It may be about more than this and based on how he feels and what he prefers as a Footballer, but I'd be very surprised if the economic argument isn't playing a big role here too.

It's Richards role to watch and go to ISC.

Blaming Boyd for the demise of Oates is a long bow. The guy is an adult and is 100% responsible from going from a representative winger to a lower grade back rower. Sure Seibold's reign of terror didn't help but it's still doesn't excuse not executing the basics.
