Q-CUP The tragic tale of Corey Oates

Anyone know any reported figure for what Oates is on?

Mmmmmm. I remember watching a game last year when Oates was in the SR and wanting him to get involved. Dropped it cold next ball. Q Cup is where he needs to be for his own sake and ours.

Oates has the option for next year too, at 500K. Its best we get him back to form.
Hopefully enough Q cup will inspire him to join a different team and not take up the option.

Yep, I have a feeling this is the long game, I’m sure Hook would be keen.
I think as soon as opposition teams worked out to kick a high ball to him on the fifth, and he either drops it or defence swallows him up quickly and takes the first run away from him, his stocks as a winger dropped by a long way.

Yep, he can do that in Q Cup. No point holding back a potential gun with more experience in position, like Riki, to try get minutes and form into Oates.

This is our problem at the Broncos. We are either relying on young players who haven't proved a thing in the NRL to fulfill their potential, or former great players who aren't what they used to be and we need them to get their form back. Very bad position to be in.

Seems to the the post Bennett trend.

That's just it though, the money IS a big deal and a pretty big difference.

$600k is huge money for anything other than an absolutely elite Winger like Radradra, and even then, you'd question whether that was honestly the best use of your salary cap and those funds. Highly likely that Oates would struggle to consistently command elite dollars like that for very long.

Compare that to Backrowers and even fairly mediocre ones are commanding that sort of money all the time, with the best ones earning significantly more than that. In Fifita's case it's actually more than twice as much.

I'm not saying Oates is likely to get anywhere near that, but in his mind he's likely thinking that as he ages, it's far easier to be a mid tier Backrower collecting $600k probably all the way up to retirement rather than having to stay at an absolutely elite level of Winger just to scrape into earning that sort of cash, which gets much harder to do as he gets older and slower.

It may be about more than this and based on how he feels and what he prefers as a Footballer, but I'd be very surprised if the economic argument isn't playing a big role here too.

I'm not against people getting more money, and for having ambition, but why risk it? You have a finite career, why throw away 10 years of ~400k a year guaranteed plus probable rep payments and all the rest, to end up in QCup halfway through trying to get into a position that there are more and better experienced players in for only probably 50% more wage.

We've seen it before with guys like Hoffman, thinking they're better than they are, just because they're suited to be on the wing.

Wing is obviously not his first choice, but he became a top 5 winger in the game. Just roll with it and enjoy the ride.

Dell and Lote became stars on the wing. Jharal was on track to be a hall of famer.

We really have to (collectively, but also particularly the club and the players) stop this looking to blame someone else for the deficiencies of a player. The player should own their limitations and mistakes and work to minimise or ideally completely negate them.

It's a team not every man for themselves. The form of the players around a player definitely affects their form. Oates is judged on how many tries he scores. He can't do that if we don't pass him the ball. He drops a lot of highballs now which he needs to fix but I won't ignore that we are receiving the ball under pressure most of the time. I know we sure as heck don't place the opposition under pressure with our kicking. The difference between us and the Roosters in this regard is immense.

Coming off the wing is a serious issue on both sides of the field that was never addressed even though every man and his dog could see it (with the exception of Siebold but he's a a maligned Academic).

If these issues are ignored by the team and coaching staff for another season then I don't expect much better from anyone replacing him (unless our recruiting suddenly improves tenfold).

The wing/2nd row issue is another thing which is between the coach and Oates. If he's deadset on 2nd row he'll probably end up stuck in QCup but I haven't written him off from a return to wing.

I’m confident Corey will be back soon enough once he has some mileage in his legs and has been injury free for a bit. All part of Kevs master plan

I would like to see him get back to form! He was a great winger a few years back. We are also paying him 500k, his services are required.
