The World Cup general discussion thread

and with the world cup being in africa, Drogba has become somewhat of a face of the world cup, this is huge news.

Sucks drogba is out. I doubt ivory coast would have made it out of their group, but he would have been good for a few spectacular goals.

Don't necessarily think that's a bad thing for England

This will be the first major international tournament where Carragher will probably be first choice at his natural positon. He will relish this opportunity IMO.

Just watched the highlights of our gamevs the USA.

Like I've said before I'm no soccer genius, but if Kennedy is going to dish that up come the big games we can kiss the next round goodbye.

word, Kennedy is a pile of shit. hes there to head the ball, yet had a free header on the 6 yard line and missed the target, if Kewell is injured, Ruka must start.

Andrea Pirlo is now out of the world cup, that really fucking sucks. Arjen Robben could be out as well

Wow there is a lot of stars dropping like flies! No doubt has to do with the ridiculous schedule soccer players have each year.

Clintos is going back to his soccer (now football) roots for the world cup.

Like many, I think Spain will get the cup. David Villa will be close to, if not the top scorer in the tournament.

Defending champs, Italy won't make it past the semis, but Gianluigi (love saying that name) will pull off some spectacular saves. They will get knocked out in quarters or semis.

Brazil will choke. They should get through the group stage, but with Portugal and Ivory Coast there I believe there is a real risk they could miss out. Kaka will go well, but the current squad has nothing on the Brazil of past.

Argentina have been my favourite national team since Batistuta and Crespo were tearing sides to pieces. They should get through the group stage, but I'm not sure they have the squad to be a realistic threat to win the cup. I hope that they prove me wrong though!

I think Capello has done some good things for England, but their squad is not as strong as it could have been. They are fortunate that they have a fairly easy group and should get through to the round of 16 without much effort.

Germany will be solid, and they always do well. Ze Germans are vewy well dwilled. Klose isn't getting better with age, but I think they will make the semis.

My dark horse is Holland. Easily the best team in their group. I think they will fly under the radar and have a genuine chance to spoil Spain's party.

Australia won't make it past the group stage. Kewell isn't 100%, Kennedy is cod awful and I don't see anyone who will really make too much of a different against teams like Germany and Serbia. Call me un-patriotic, but I think we will be lucky to win a game.

USA will be the Senegal of World Cup 2010. They will finish their group in second and I think they are capable of causing some upsets on their journey.

I'm genuinely excited for the World Cup. I'm not too sure why, as I haven't watched football for a while, but I am.

Argentina DO have the squad to go far and possibly be a threat to the title (despite some strange omissions), their problem is Maradona. Unless by some miracle he has learned how to be a top shelf manager in the last few months, he will be the reason Argentina will underachieve.

Any team with Messi is bound to fire. Fingers crossed.

lolz

LOLZ. Just realised my mistake.

It was supposed to read, "...won't make it past the semis...."

I'm on the Spain bandwagon, cause no chance we will make it to next stage.

If Maradona had his way the Argentine time would be called the Maradonas. And the jersey wouldn't be blue and white it'd be pictures of Maradonas face.

Yep, agreed. On paper they're as good as Spain. If they win it will be down to the indivdual brilliance of Messi, Higuain etc.

I don't think they are anywhere near as balanced as the spainish squad. Their defence looked shakey in qualifiers and I think they lack physical players in midfield (apart from mascherano). Although I am really looking forward to seeing How di Maria goes, he looked amazing for benefica in Europa.

Di Maria is a phenomenal player, he'll be signed up by a 'major' European club after the Cup I reckon.

Nani is out now.

FFS the amount of injuries/injury scares for this World Cup are ridiculous.
