Gould said he spoke to an NRL doctor this morning, who said that the fracture could be in one of three bones. All three would require surgery but can be left for a couple of weeks, so Locky should be able to play (but in pain, obviously). The only problem would be that if it was his eye socket then that can cause double vision, which may not present until 24h after the injury.
But the headgear may still might not be enough to save the Queensland legend from risking permanent facial deformity if he chooses to play after reports he has undergone surgery to repair what is believed to be a depressed fracture of the cheekbone.
That's what Brisbane Broncos officials fear privately after Lockyer collected a stray knee from Broncos teammate Gerard Beale in the nail-biting win over St George-Illawarra at Suncorp Stadium.
looks like its been taken down...this is what it said
"Inspirational Brisbane Broncos captain Darren Lockyer has played his last rugby league game.
The Broncos this afternoon confirmed tests have revealed he has a fractured cheekbone and will miss Friday's preliminary final showdown with the Manly Sea Eagles.
Lockyer, who last night kicked an extra time field goal against the St George Illawarra Dragons to take his team within one game of the 2011 NRL grand final, suffered the injury in the 70th minute
Ironically it came not from a Dragons defender but teammate Gerard Beale, who had soared to collect a bomb but ended up collecting his skipper with a knee.
There was instant concern before Lockyer rose to his feet and rejoined his side, ulimately kicking the field goal to claim a one-point victory.
The club did its best to bury concerns for an armada of anxious fans but suggestions there was something more serious, most likely a fracture to the cheekbone, kept emerging from the Broncos camp well into the night.
The Broncos are yet to annnounce who will replace Lockyer as five-eighth for next Friday's sudden death clash."
