NEWS Walters: Milford can win it for Brisbane

Thankyou. An honest non biased view. Porthoz invariably takes the opposite stance to me based on a intense dislike. It's true, Milford doesn't truly commit and there is absolutely no doubt going low would have a much greater chance of success.

Tend to agree with this. Watch the replays of Canberra's tries.

I'm becoming more convinced we need to give up on Milford at five eighth, and move him back to fullback. But he's going to be even more exposed back there as last line of defence.

This is a clear symptom of bad coaching.

I have no trouble with the blame being shared but both those tries before half time could have been stopped and the best positioned person did not make his best effort. Milford continues to use the softer non effective method. It's a real problem and thinking I have an agenda against Milford is wrong. I have an expectation that a million dollar player makes his best effort and he's fucking not doing that.

Problem i think with Milford and judging him as a million dollar player is that he isn playing in the role he got his contract in. WE are expecting him to be the million dollar, game managing half back, when he should be the game breaking, unpredictable five eighth.

No, he's not. And more than that, I'd go so far as to say on recent performances he's not only the most overpaid player in the NRL, but the worst five-eighth.

It's true he pulls off the odd decent grubber but that's bread and butter stuff for any half. It's the entry requirement. Every opposition fan should be shitting their pants when he gets the ball on the fifth. Instead, it's every Broncos fan.

The kid is an extraordinarily gifted player. We're wasting his talent.

That's bullshit. I don't argue your points due to an intense dislike of you. That seems to be your go to excuse when you've got nothing.

I think @Morkel is one the best persons here, and I find it hard to agree with him on many things. In fact, I agree with you much more than I do with him, and although I do think you're an arrogant condescending prick, I'd still be happy to buy you a few beers and exchange ideas, because I do also believe you're one of the smartest people in this forum.

What would be the best way to tackle Leilua in that particular instance, especially for someone like Milford?
I doubt any method would be successful, because Milford is a lightweight taking on a heavily muscled player with tree trunks as legs. There probably are a few of them, but I'm struggling to think of a half that would have been successful at this point...

I'm not arguing Milford isn't a great defender, I'm disputing your assertion that Leilua's tries were his fault, while ignoring everyone else that failed. The rest is window dressing to push your bullshit agenda that he doesn't put his body on the line and should be dropped to reggies.

Halves are notoriously bad defenders in general. Milford isn't even amongst the worst of them, but his failures have been exacerbated by the fact he is left isolated too often. He needs more protection from his inside backrower and the team in general, just like Kodi or most other halves in the NRL do.
I think Oates is a bit at fault as well. He had to come in and hit BJ to force him to make the extra pass.

BJ thought he was coming in, Rapana had his hands ups waiting for the pass and Darius had started pushing out to cover Rapana. Oates hesitated (probably because he has been burnt so many times coming in) and BJ basically had a 1 on 1 with Milf given Darius ended up wrong footed after having to adjust to Oates decision to not come in.

On the whole Jack is at fault though. BJ didn't get the ball cleanly and was flat footed, Jack should've shut the play down there.

How typically Porthoz. It has nothing to do with scapegoating and you haven't even considered what I wrote but that's you. If I was scapegoating I wouldn't have been writing about Milford's atrocious tackling on this day but I've been writing about it for years. I mean I've written about it many times.

Please don't respond without answering this simple question.

Which tackle is likely to be more successful in this case. Lightweight Milford going high on heavily muscled Leilui or a low legs tackle?

Forget Bird missing his tackle because even though he misses a few he puts his body on the line and Milford had a simple side on shot and FUCKING CHOSE to go high even though it is ineffectual most of the time. It's not about blame for this game, it's a chancre that needs treating.

I tend to agree with Porthoz that he was unlikely to stop him no matter what he did, but you are spot on that the only viable tackle that had any prospect of doing so in the circumstances was a legs tackle, no doubt at all.

I wonder if these excuses fly for anyone else on the team

I am starting to lose track, could someone do up an Excel spreadsheet with all of the various agendas, who should be out of the team and who should replace them according to various posters. Hmmm, on second thoughts I don't know that we have the technology to achieve that at this time.

Well, clears throat, if I am misrepresenting you I apologize. If you genuinely believe that Milford has no case to answer and that others are equally at fault I respect and disagree strongly with that view. I also don't believe 'I've got nothing' and if I was better with technology I'd put together 50 instances, back to back of Milford utterly refusing to go low and on each occasion, failing dismally. I believe you're an intelligent poster and a pretty good writer so again, I apologize for unfairly characterizing you.

Now, can we all just go to the pub??

If you're talking about the first of the two tries immediately before halftime then I respectfully disagree. That was Milford's easiest tackle to make and Leilua was 11-12 metres out at point of contact. Milford only had to grab one meaty thigh but no matter, my point is he keeps trying to tackle high, arm grabbing rather than put his body on the line and I expect more from a million dollar man.

Thank you, I truly appreciate that.

I'm not disputing Milford's tackling technique or whether it needs improvement. I'm arguing he's not solely at fault, and in this case, I doubt any technique would have stopped Leilua, and others were as much or more at fault than he was. It was a collective error, or the sum of individual ones which resulted in those tries.

It's also in my opinion definitely not a reason to send him to reggies, as tackling is not something a half should ever primarily be judged on, no matter what his price is.

Yes Milford isn’t the best defender but nor was Locky. That’s why Toni Carrol defended beside him. I think Glenn has to step up and help him out more. Also I’d move him one wider and defend against the centre not the edge forwards
