all im seeing is excuses excuses excuses, just like some of us predicted would happen if he didnt win a premiership in newcastle. its everyone and everythings fault apart from bennett, he never deserves any of the blame.

newcastles roster was not average. They had the most rep players out of any team in the league, a good halves pairing, one of the form fullbacks of the last few years, a very good forward pack, the best winger in the comp, and (not in my opinion, but many believe it) one of the best hookers of the modern game.

I find it hard to believe that the ownership crisis really affected the players either. They were always going to get their money, even if it was a bit late - the $10mil (or was it 20?) bank guarantee guaranteed that. who owns the club has no bearing on the players. they certainly wouldnt go out there and play sub-par because of who owns the club lol.

So not getting paid is no big deal... awesome. We are hiring staff at the moment, I'll go tell the other managers right now, this is great news.

When someone talks about rep players, I thought it was pretty obvious we meant current rep layers... as in when origin or australian teams are named in 2014, they are in them.

Bennett went to Newcastle hoping to work with exciting players such as Uate, Mullen, McManus, and of course Gidley. His downfall was that he expected these players to be on the field more often than not.

When Bennett agreed to terms, Gidley was still the player that Qld feared - a tireless worker that would routinely run the most metres with & without the ball, yet still have the smarts & grit to be able to pull an opposition forward pack apart in the 75th minute. He was Bennett-ready. Mullen had potential yet always came up with the pretty play, the one that made him look the best but didn't achieve the best outcomes. He was different to Soward in that it wasn't a confidence issue, but most of us (me included) expected Bennett to instill in him a mental toughness, while working on his leadership.

In hindsight, bringing Boyd over was a win and a loss. Gidley was ageing, but his best position was still fullback. Like Boyd, he wasn't overly skilled (his brother was twice as lucky in that regard), but he'd win games on his attitude, his effort, and on his detailed preparation & training. But of course, he's hardly even been on the park except for this year, so having Boyd there kind of worked in the end. But an injured Gidley left a hole in the salary cap and a gap in talent in the playing squad. Gidley was as influential to the Knights as Lockyer was to the Broncos. Now you tell me how well the Broncos would go without a fit Lockyer on the paddock. Even Bennett was never able to overcome that much of a hit.

St George thought they had him for $800000 a season

St George are broke ... they were never going to be allowed to offer him more than that since they recently requested and received an advance from the NRL

Well regardless of how we all feel, its done, lets now look to what the team will look like next season. I imagine WB will be pretty keen to sign on Copley asap.

Copely is already here until end of 2016

You do realise how long ago that is, right?

Haha sorry, I mean they were also not boring up until the end of 2008 and what happened at the end of that season? Also I have never watched a Broncos game and thought it was boring, so my opinion might be a little bias.

you conradict yourself here ...

first you say "How the **** do we know what happened behind the scenes?" then you go on with a bunch of assumptions and guesses about how things may or may not have happened.

so i'll ask you this: how the **** do you know that what happened wasn't exactly as has been reported in the media?. i.e. that Wayne Bennett decided that he wanted to be back at the Broncos and instead of phoning the board to offer his services, rany the News Corp boss, Murdoch to ensure he got exactly what he wanted.

I read we are hiring "the great man" to "rebuild the club's culture" which apparently lies in ruins ... just near Hook's corpse who no doubt was felled when the pillars of the palace fell on him.

Nevertheless, Bennett's signing, however you look at it, proves that it is, in fact who you know, not what you know - apart from your bank balance, that counts when you want to get ahead in the ethically and morally just world of business, sorry, I mean rugby league coaching.

i know its a anonymous poll but how could anyone possibly vote for No - Griffin is the right choice. Anyone care to give reasons why you voted for it?

I voted that because I am not particularly keen on Bennett coming back as head coach and know of no others I would prefer over hook that are available.

If you had told me 3 years ago shortly after Henjak was sacked that in 3 years time, Bennett would be returning to the Broncs and the fanbase are actually divided by it, I would've shot myself in the face.

You mean just after Bennett had coached the Dragons to the premiership?

My opinion might have been a little different then as well.

And what has changed since then?

It seems that people with a healthy grudge/agenda against Bennett have a great knack for completely ignoring what has been going on at Newcastle over the past couple years. It has hardly been ideal.

Or you can just be an eight time premiership winner ... same same really.

lol.
