MELTDOWN Wayne Bennett - Moves to Souths

Should Wayne Bennett's Contract be Extended?

I think it might have the opposite effect. I think Maguire is EXACTLY what this side needs, a no-nonsense coach who want take any rubbish or play favourites. He may not work long-term but for the two-three years, it isn't a bad option by any means.

What a stupid idea ! You chase a long term coach not one here one there , absolutely ridiculous....

While it could happen, i did have to chuckle at that article that @Nashy posted ... no quotes from anyone, just NRL.com "understands" this and NRL.com "understands" that ... lol, that's some quality "journalism" right there

Personally i think it is time to move on from Bennett, although i would like to see him serve out the final year of his contract in 2019.

so let's look at the contenders to be the next coach of the greatest rugby league empire on the planet:

Kevin Walters:
  • Current QLD State of Origin coach
  • Assistants to both Bennett and Bellamy
  • Knows the Broncos culture and expectations
Personally, I'm not sold on Walters. I didn't like much of what i have seen of him in Origin and his top grade record in the ESL was pretty poor.

Michael Maguire:
  • Assistant to Bellamy
  • Premierships: Wigan (2010); Souths (2014)
  • Challenge cup champions (2011)
  • Won WCC and Auckland Nines in 2015
  • Current NZ coach
As far as candidates go, he has an impressive record. my only concern with him is will his intensity burn out the players like it did at the end of his Rabbitohs stint. if he has learned his lessons from that, then he could be exactly what this team needs

Anthony Seibold:
  • Worked as an assistant to Bellamy
  • current QLD Assistant coach
  • current Dally M "Coach of the Yeat"
  • Finalists in his first season at the Rabbitohs
For me, it may be a bit early to look at Seibold, I have liked what i have seen from him this year, but 1 year doesn't make a career

Jason Demetriou:
  • Current Broncos assistant to Bennett
  • Assistant to Paul Green in their premiership year
  • ISC Minor premierships (2013, 2014)
  • ISC Premiership (2014)
  • ISP Pemiership (2016)
  • NRL State Champions (2014, 2016)
An impressive lower grade record, but the big question is will that translate to the top grade. He will get his chance one day, but after the failures of Henjak and Griffin, the club needs to go with an experienced first grade mentor IMO

Verdict:

Michael Maguire looks to be out best option, if he has learned his lessons. He has also reportedly just turned down a big money offer from the Sea Eagles.

I’m sold on Maguire out of the lot available.

Anthony Siebold was able to lift his players off the deck into a premiership threatening team in the space of a season. Something Michael Maguire was unable to do himself. The players bought into his coaching style, something that Wayne Bennett talks about and for that reason I’m swayed toward him a tad.
That said, I do recall an interview on NRL360 where Maguire said he had learned his lesson and was fit and ready to give it another shot.
I wonder if Siebold signed with the Broncos for 2020, Souths would let him go for 2019 and get Maguire back. Crazy as it seems he did get them a premiership and if he’s changed his style why not?

You mean except for that time that he took them from missing the 8 consistently to premiers in the space of a few years?

I just want a coach that'll win us a premiership without having to cheat or sell our soul.

Manly just confirmed that Maguire is no longer an option for them. So, if the proposed Cleary to Panthers & Bennett to Tigers for next season happens, that probably means Mag is our coach.

I notice that the Sea Eagles didn't say that Maguire effectively told them to **** off ... here is Maguire's quote:

“I have informed them (Penn) that I’ve declined the opportunity to coach the Sea Eagles,” Maguire told The Daily Telegraph, “I’d prefer not to go into the reasons why.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone else.

“I’ve got a big challenge with the Kiwis and that’s where my focus is right now.”

Manly will have a tough time convincing anyone who is in contention with us to sign with them ... our facilities alone, blow them out of the water

Apologies, talking post premiership of course - thought that would have been obvious.

Brisbane supercoach Wayne Bennett has reaffirmed his commitment to the Broncos next year as he and Wests Tigers denied the seven-time premiership winner had been approached to replace Ivan Cleary.
It took just three days for the confetti to settle after the NRL grand final before the off-season coaching merry-go-round cranked up with The Australian reporting that Bennett had been shopped to the Tigers for 2020.

While Bennett is happy to entertain any offers from 2020 onwards, Tigers fans will be wanting to know what happens in the short term, especially with Penrith confident they can get Cleary for the start of pre-season training next month.

Bennett first heard about being linked to the Tigers after a morning chat with his sister early on Wednesday. Bennett made a point there was no way he would walk out on Red Hill early.
Cleary still has two years to run on his deal at the Tigers, but he and Penrith are keen to be reunited for next season.
Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated Cleary will honour the final two years of his deal and he maintained that stance last night.
Bennett, who has already been informed that next year will be his last at the Broncos, told the Herald on Wednesday: "I’ve said it numerous times and I’ll repeat it – I intend to continue coaching after 2019 if I can get a job somewhere. Nothing is off the list. We’ll see what happens. The first time I heard about the Wests Tigers [link] was this morning when my sister told me about it."
Regardless of the lack of love from the Broncos hierarchy, Bennett has no desire to pack his bags early. "I’ve never intimated that at any stage, and nothing has changed," Bennett said.
The fact the Broncos roster has a better chance of pushing for the 2019 title than the Tigers would also make it harder for Bennett to entertain the idea of leaving early.

Pascoe, whose club has also been linked to former South Sydney premiership-winning boss Michael Maguire, has become frustrated by the intense speculation.
"Especially when we’re not the ones driving the speculation," he said. "The first I heard about the Wayne speculation was Wednesday. Our position hasn’t changed and we have a coach who will honour his contract the next two years."
The Tigers would be aware they have little to gain by releasing Cleary now. A better option would surely be to wait 12 months when more than half-a-dozen rival coaches come off contract, including Bennett.
As well as the Tigers, Maguire has also been linked to Manly and Bennett’s Broncos. One thing is for sure: he wants to coach in Australia, having already passed on a couple of job offers in the Super League in the hope of returning to the NRL.
The Sea Eagles are also in the mix for assistant John Cartwright, but are not in the position to lock down anyone until they thrash out a proper settlement with Trent Barrett.
If the Sea Eagles or the Tigers did pursue Maguire, they would be forced to start their pre-season without him because the New Zealand coach leaves the country on Friday and won’t return until midway through November, after the three-Test series in England.
Muddying the waters even further is the fact that it is not uncommon for player managers to shop coaches to clubs without their knowledge, such as when the Orr brothers attempted to shop Bennett to the Titans midway through the year, even though he was not one of their clients.

The speculation around Cleary and the Panthers only intensifies with each day Cleary refuses to publicly declare his intentions. He refused to guarantee he would see out his Tigers deal when he fronted his final post-match press conference, and since that time his son, Nathan, has signed a new deal with Penrith until the end of 2024.
Should Cleary not join Penrith for 2019, the club is more than comfortable with Cameron Ciraldo, who took over from Anthony Griffin, the man who loomed as the only stumbling block in retaining their halfback.
Anthony Seibold, meanwhile, has a year to run on his deal with South Sydney and has started talks about extending his stay at Redfern, despite the reported interest from the Broncos.
Like Bennett, Seibold will honour his deal at Souths in 2019, regardless of whether he does sign elsewhere for the following season.
