When the Broncos began looking for a replacement for Wayne for the 2009 season and beyond, Ivan's was not the first name put forward.
Craig Bellamy was the name on everyone's lips. Wayne's right-hand man in both the 1998 and 2000 premiership wins, Bellamy had long been touted as the heir apparent to Wayne's throne at the Broncos.
Bellyache had more than proved his worth as an NRL head coach during his time in charge of the Melbourne Storm. He was coming off contract and still had family living in south-east Queensland. With Melbourne and Brisbane both owned by News Limited, everything had appeared in place to make the move happen.
I didn't speak to anyone within the Broncos management while negotiations were taking place, because I didn't feel the need. There were a number of candidates who had been floated for the position - Kevie Walters, Daniel Anderson, Neil Henry, Ivan Cleary and Ricky Stuart had all been tossed up. But I assumed, given the club's status and the fact Wayne clearly felt he was being pushed towards the exit, that not only would they be looking for the best, they would quite likely already have secured their signature. And outside of Wayne, Craig was the best.
As we now know, the men in charge of the appointment - managing director Bruno Cullen and chairman Darryl Somerville - missed their man. To this day I am still not sure where it all went wrong, because as I understood things, the Bellyache to Brisbane deal was done. In early April the word I was being told was that it was all over bar the shouting and that Craig was just being careful with managing his exit from Melbourne.
I am unsure what sparked the about-face which saw him sign a five-year extension on April 17 to remain at the Storm. I have heard Craig was upset with the way he was spoken to by one Broncos official involved in the interview process when he was reportedly being given an ultimatum about how and when things would be announced.
Now, anyone who knows Bellyache knows he is not the sort of bloke who will be pushed around by anyone. If you have seen the footage during a game of his reactions in the coach's box, you understand he has a short fuse and is certainly no shrinking violet. He isn't the sort of bloke who would react well to ultimatums or anything he felt resembled bullying tactics. And so it was that Bellyache stayed down south.
