What is happening at the Broncos?

Completely agree with what you’re saying but personally I would trade kniko and Boyd for Pearce and Ponga in a heart beat.

I just said Pearce was better than Nikorima.

.. I'm talking about right now, not a hypothetical scenario down the track where Ponga might end up a better player than Boyd. Right now Boyd is better, he was the best Fullback in the game 12-18 months ago, the incumbent Queensland & Australia Fullback. Ponga has played 10 games of NRL.

Recency bias gets out of hand on here sometimes.
Boyd had a career year without a doubt, but with all the top fullbacks dropping out like flies, he got the jersey handed to him pretty much by default, let's not kid ourselves.

Right now, Boyd isn't better than most NRL fullbacks, and while I can see him improving (he fucking better) if his hammies let him and his attitude does a 180, almost half the NRL fullback contingent will still be better than him imo, and that includes Ponga, unless injury cruels him.

Thanks for the old footage. I even spotted Peter wallace in a broncos jersey. My original point was that our current squad has no potential immortals, no top tier elite anymore. not about who's popular and gets the most cheers. Sam Thaiday is a loveable larrikin but definitely not an elite player anymore. Key word there is "anymore". All those players you showed were awesome 2 years ago but at present they are not playing at the same level.

Make a good point. I can’t think of anyone in the current squad I would have in my all time best broncos team. Gillo would be best bet but as awesome as he is where has his offload gone? And he damaging wide runs? It’s feels like a few of our players their attack has been coached out of them to be tackling bags.

Which also goes to attitude. I’d be unhappy at my job if I wasn’t allowed to use my talents to just tick the next box and it would show in my performance.

As for salary cap comments. Melbourne let go Inglis when no choice but kept the critical part of the spine. They let Cronk go only for personal reasons and when he is likely past his prime and while they have an awesome succession plan of a very promising young half in Croft, Munster taking on his role well, Smith staying to guide the team around and Riley Jacks is a fantastic plan B half. Keeping Cronk may not have been the best option anyway as wouldn’t want Cronk, Slater and Smith to go at the same time and frees up huge chunk of cash to retain their next hooker and half.

Eels let Gallen go. Guy is team cancer don’t you mean they cut him out....

What's happening at the Broncos? Not much. Nothing really. Same old...

At least the Sharks bit the bullet and made a change to their full back.

Hope they do the Merge. Because I'm miffed. Lol

I don't know if they are trained to be tackling bags. Rather I would say the inconsistency of our halves, but also our other backs has turned them that way. We too often blow a chance for territory with an all or nothing play, sometimes after our forwards have courageously defended for consequtive sets. They then get tired and compound the problem with errors of their own. It feeds into a downhill spiral.
Why else does Roberts and Milford look so much more dangerous, but our attack otherwise flat?
I'm all for taking risks, but first you got to earn the right. Big, strong, players require their opponents to be at least as tired as they are. That's why teams play for repeat sets. It's not about saving a set. It's about wearing your opponents down.
To be fair, the forwards themselves contributed to their own troubles, but that's when a smart half gets rid of it downfield, and plays it safe. I'm not sure even that could have saved the team with Luke warm efforts in defence, but it might have been worth a shot at least early on.

They moved their 24 game, veteran winger from fullback? What a club

Is it just me, or are they getting away with murder in terms of being offside? Thought the same last week, but obviously I'm biased.
Yeah and they were laying all over us. Not a shark fan but I'd take Matty Prior in a heartbeat.

I'd 100% sign up Matt Prior and Chad Townsend.

Prior is just a no nonsense, hard hitting front rower. He's steely and has endurance and his defense seems good.

Townsend would be a God send for us. A very very good and consistent organising game managing half back.

Some of the criticisms are still valid in this thread so calm down, one swallow doesn't make a summer and all that.

Yeah a lot Of soft penalties given and couldn't put them away when they were on their knees. I'm pleased with the attitude in defence though.

EXACTLY!!!

One game does not make a season!

Surely you see the irony in that, bloody hell lol

Of course, but if we lose next week this thread explodes again.

As always the truth is somewhere in the middle. It's not the end of the world but there are definitely some things we need to improve on, not just player performances.
