I thought it might be interesting given all the changes to have a thread about what you would have done player retention/purchase wise say in the last season or so.

Personally I would have bought Sims, but not Clinton, instead giving the likes of Taylor and Kenny more game time.

I would have forgot about folau and groomed Moon for the other centre spot. I'd have released Stagg and Michaels and possibly Boyd, and did my best to retain Hannant, Ennis and Kemp.

I would've said to Folau if you want to come home, that's fine, we'll pay you what we'd pay any 19-year-old outside back that's played rep football. ie, around $200K. Want more, stay in Melbourne.

If he came, I'd have let Michaels go, but hung on to Kemp and Boyd.
I wouldn't have signed Clinton, instead left some breathing space on the cap thanks to Civoniceva going to Penrith.

Would've signed Sims, Marsh and Wallace for sure.

This year I would retain Hannant and Ennis (1 more year for Ennis), and allowed Stagg and Moon to stay on with their final year option but put them on notice they had to show something substantial to stay.

Monitor Ennis' progress next year, if anymore injuries or form problems, put all eggs into getting Cam Smith.
Also I'd advise Locky that if he wanted to stay in 2010 he'd have to take a significant pay cut, and would only be offered a 2 year deal.

I'd pay Ennis 4 million.

Seriously though, I wouldn't have signed Marsh, Clinton or Sims. Wouldn't have went for Folau either, unless he agreed to sign for 300K. And if he did sign, I'd put him on the wing, and persist with Moon in the centres. Moon can pass and he actually seems to work for his winger, unlike a lot of centres these days.

I doubt that Folau would be getting more than 300k

Hmmm, not pick up any additional forwards or utility, yet we get rid of Civoniceva, Thorn, Carlaw, Berrigan, Lacey and Te Reo...

I am SO glad that Alec isn't on the Broncos football management staff!

I would've signed Mick Monas, Wallace, Sims & Folau.

I would offer Ennis the same money, but if he chose to go then wouldn't be too concerned.

I would have seriously upgraded Hannant

The only person I wouldn't have signed is Hewitt. Many other players have reached their best form under Bennett, and I think Clinton was damaging when he was at his best. He starting to get back to that level now. As for Marsh, Wallace and Sims, they are all solid signings that any team probably would have made...except maybe Penrith.

I would have signed Falou, no hesitiation, but like Coxy I would have said to him that he has to play for our $$, not what he was asking for. I would have re-signed Hannant, Michaels, Boyd, Stagg and Moon, and would have risked Ennis, Kemp, Eastwood, Hewitt. If they leave, it's sad, but not club threatening.

Personally I wouldn't have changed much to what's happened. I'm happy with the guys we bought and while naturally disappointed we've lost Hannant and Ennis I don't think we were going to win a bidding war for them.

I'd chase one more player for next year, maybe a young up and coming forward - can;t think of any names in particular right now

I didnt really understand the Clinton signing. i can understand Sims as he's younger and really got something to prove. But like has been said already we had Hannant,Kenny,Taylor,Thaiday already.

And looks like Hewitt was a waste of money and time.

Hewitt's a waste only because he was unlucky enough to pick up a pretty serious injury early on. If he was fit and in form when the Broncos had problems with Hodges, Hunt and then Michaels early in the season, he could well have been in the spot that Kemp or Robinson are in now. You can't foresee that.

Clinton...well, I guess the Broncos had an each way bet in case Sims, Taylor or Kenny didn't live up to the mark. Bennett got to know Clinton a bit with the Australian side and has a lot of time for him, which helped them overlook his form problems of the past couple of years.

He's started to look OK too, so maybe it was good foresight. Hard to judge yet, we'll see how things look in a few weeks.

Does any1 know how well hewitt has been playing lately if he even is.

And i agree Clinton is getting better each game. I want to see his old 20 metre runs to get the ball off a tap, he doesnt get a good run up anymore.

I would have signed the players we did. i think Clinton's experience is important since losing Civo, Webcke and Thorn. i would only offer Ennis the same as he is on now because i don't think he has earned an upgrade given tha he has spent the majority of time at the club Injured. i would have offered Hannant a decent upgrade and i like the Folau signing. i would get rid of Perry, Frawley and Robinson from our 25 man squad. i would have also liked to have kept Kemp but i certainly wouldn't have offered him the 250k that the Warriors did

Hewitt has been playing on and off for the Wynnum reserves. Apparently he just got another injury too. He has been very unlucky with injuries this season, and that obviously makes it hard for a bloke to make a strong impression.

Summed it up beautifully bfoord. Exactly what I would have done.

I actually would be looking at Costigan to fill the shoes of Carroll next season.

Wow, that could be the best thing you've ever said on here! icon_thumbs_u I probably would have offered Hannant more than $150k, but still, I pretty much agree with what you've said.

Not sure what it is, but I'm not convinced Folau is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I hope he does live up to potential, but I get nervous when people say things like "the next Mal Meninga".
