To me Perth ticks all the boxes.
1. New timezone (therefore more telecast/TV rights options)
2. Growing corporate market - mining boom is sending shitloads of dollars there, and a lot of east coasters moving there who would enjoy having some league on a regular basis
3. Local competition already established, therefore potentially a talent pool to draw some local talent in and get community engagement in the club
4. Not a saturated sporting market (2 AFL, 1 A League and 1 Rugby team there).
5. Existing stadium for rectangular sport (NIB Stadium...hopefully if they improve the drainage :P )

There's no negatives. People will try and point that we tried there before and the club shut down, but that wasn't a failing on the part of Perth as a league city. They were, IMO, the most unlucky victims of the super league war.

Glad you agreed about Darwin.

Perth is apparently pretty sold on Rugby League, so I can see why Perth would be a good option. But nothing has come out of Adelaide.

Junior playing levels in Adeliade have risen quite considerably in the last few years. I think that if the NRL got better exposure in Adeliade it could become quite popular (see my 1st post on Broncos v Parra)

The NRL must put Adelaide on the agenda, but not for the current expansion. We do need some NRL here though. At the moment we seem to be getting 1 game per year (a Bulldogs game) and they get about 10,000 turning up with very poor advertising. We need better promotion and maybe 3 or 4 games per year for a few years and see where that leads

Totally agree with what you said the 10,000 people turning up to Rugby League in Adelaide with no promotion is quite impressive. Do you live in Adelaide? and if you do what do you think about NRL coverage there.

Hey Broncoman, yes I live in Adelaide

The Ch 9 league coverage here is disgraceful

Friday night games are 2 or 3 in the morning and Foxtel can't show them live coz Ch 9 won't let them

Last year we got Origin live, but that was the first year since I can remember

I am hoping for a better deal soon

I'm another fan of the Perth franchise.

TV options are far more attractive with a team based at least 3 hours behind the current crop.

I don't think there should be any real hurry to expand the game just yet.

The IC has to make sure there's a solid base to expand from first. That means monitoring the health of struggling clubs like Cronulla, Manly & the Gold Coast, not to mention Melbourne who could be at risk once this six year $25million deal with the IC finishes.

There are also bigger priorities - such as negotiating a superior television deal. Rugby League needs better nation wide coverage, we can't just hand Perth or Adelaide a license when their own state can't watch them live on tv. The IC need to learn from past mistakes if they want to truly grow the game.

Once that's determined then they can consider which options the best.

When it comes to current bids, for mine Perth is the ideal location for all the reasons Coxy listed. But in terms of who has the best bid in terms of organisation, well that would be the Central Coast. For mine though, the CC is just way too safe and while I'd have them before a number of current NRL sides (Cronulla, Manly, Souths) I just don't think there would be a big enough return by putting a team out there. At least under the current make up of the competition.

Totally agree Channel 9 dont bother showing league or union outside of NSW and QLD. They seem to think Rugby is only played in NSW and QLD and its a minor sport in the other states. When I go to Adelaide i always take my laptop with me to watch Rugby League.

Well hopefully nein lose the TV rights and whoever picks it up can give the expansion teams the coverage they deserve

I believe to get a bigger tv deal we need to at least have a team in Perth.

Perth

They shouldn't have culled them in the first place.

It is a minor sport in other states. From a Nine business perspective that's why it's not worth it for them to show, and why the NRL needs to be more proactive with this in their next deal.

Whilst in the past I was annoyed, I always understood it from a business perspective. 9 is a business and Adelaide is an AFL town. But when I lost all patience is with the digital revolution, 9 now have 3 channels and they still can't do a decent coverage. That is unforgivable

Yeah this is my gripe as well. It's not as if they show first run high profile shows on both digital stations. It's usually re-runs of older shows. There'd be no harm at all in showing one of the Friday night league games at say 9.30pm

Yes, spot on Coxy

I was including Rugby Union in my previous comment, not just Rugby League.
