Where will we finish?

Ben Hunt says he has overcome the mental anguish of last year's grand final howler

BEN Hunt says he has overcome the mental anguish of last year's grand final nightmare and vowed to go to “another level” to break the longest title drought in Broncos history.

Friday night’s sudden-death showdown against the Titans will see Hunt back on the finals stage, almost a year on from his gut-wrenching extra-time blunder in the 2015 decider.

The finals derby will pit Hunt against Titans halfback rival Ashley Taylor, the young gun forced to quit the Broncos last season to chase his NRL dream.

In the biggest game of his career, Hunt last year sensationally grassed the extra-time kick-off which led to Cowboys champion Johnathan Thurston’s premiership-winning field goal.

The howler left Hunt on the brink of tears and despite his magnificent 2015 campaign, there were doubts as to whether the former Test halfback would recover mentally this season.

As he prepares to face Taylor and the Titans, Hunt believes he is stronger for the experience and wants to deliver career-best form to lead the Broncos to the title.

“To be honest, I’ve put the grand final well behind me now,” Hunt said.

“It was tough at the time but mentally I learned a lot and I’ve been pretty happy with my game the last few weeks.
“Personally, I have to go to another level in the finals.

“The Titans will be tough. The Titans are a real gutsy grinding team, they fight really hard so they will push us until the 80th minute.

“Every year you want to go deep into the finals and win the competition and that is the plan this year.

“Hopefully, I can help us go one better."

Hunt and halves partner Anthony Milford hit a worrying form slump as Brisbane’s premiership push unravelled during the Origin period.

But the pair have recaptured their mojo in Brisbane’s five-game winning streak.

Skipper Corey Parker lauded Hunt for bouncing back from the toughest moment of his career.

“It wasn’t fair what happened to Ben that night,” Parker said.

“There were a lot of things that happened in the grand final and it wasn’t Ben Hunt’s fault.

“But he has shown a lot of toughness. Providing the forward pack lays the foundation, I’m confident Ben can get the job done this week.”

Hunt said he was motivated to fire in the finals by his struggles during the Origin season.

“Last year, me and ‘Milf’ took our game to another level during the Origin period and we didn’t do that this year,” he said.
“I probably took my foot off the accelerator and it all fell apart.

“I’m playing my best when I’m running the ball, so that’s something I need to do in the finals.”

I could've done without seeing those photos going into the finals. Now the desire to win the premiership is well and truly alive.

We need to win it for hunt to well and truly get over it I reckon.

If Bennett were a mad psycho genius, he'd play the GF in a video session on Thursday and ask them to point out specifically where they went wrong, and there is plenty there to point out without bringing up Hunt's dropped ball. This serves 2 purposes, ignites the fire for the finals series and shows them what they need to do, or it backfires and kills their confidence.

I still want to cry a bit.

No joke, I'd wager there was a slight throb in your foot at the same time.

Oh, and Pushkin. You suck for posting that.

You doubt that he's a mad psycho genius?

IMO once it was worked out that we would be playing finals, this would have happened. I'm just hoping it was at the right time....for maximum effect.

Oh and your sig? If we make the GF, I propose a funding process of some sort to ensure that Bman and his dad are there.

I like it. I like it Harry. Keep the crowd funder on standby

Will there be more of those private siege mentality training sessions at Suncorp? That seems to work

Broncos staff thinks the final training session could be at Suncorp.

But there is one this morning at Red Hill that starts in 40 minutes.

We may as well pack up and go on mad monday...

Greg Alexander claims we can not win the comp. Due to our tactics and the fact that "our big men could struggle against the big packs"

This is a good omen: Brandy is an absolute fuckwit. It's amazing how much he and Gaz hate the Broncs.

Criticised the fact that we were 14 points down and were were still kicking for the corners. With 50 minutes of the game to go, is it better to grind back in to the contest, backing your ability to score points whilst being patient, or is it better to push stupid passes and try to make something out of nothing and put ourselves on the back foot even more?

I thought our tactics were the right tactics even if we did stuff up a couple of times.

Roosters this year were not an 80 minute team.. Kicking for the corners, kicking it out, getting a breather, backing our defence, grinding them down and then.. We broke them.

What a douche. I said to my mate at 0-14, if we hold the ball and stop making stupid mistakes, we'll win this easily.
