I don't think this club needs a Madge and the whole just yell at them to "be better"... but they desperately do need a teacher.

Our junior development is getting the biggest and the fastest... but they come in and are completely football illiterate.

If you're going to just keep recruiting these super athletic players and then not teach them shit, then it doesn't matter how much you yell at them to be better because they don't know what they're meant to be better at... what worked for them against U16's doesn't work against grown ass men that have been playing for 12yrs.

These kids are screaming out to be taught how to play... they want to develop, they want to learn, they want experienced players to learn from, they want to learn systems, etc.

To teach them the systems you need to have a coach that knows the current trends in the game and can then translate that across to the group as practical useful things they can do in game, that leads to wins on the field.

If you've got a group that are seeing what's being taught translate to wins on the field then they will be invested and they will stay, because they are seeing the benefit it has on their development.

The teacher can either be the head coach or it can be assistant coaches or skills coaches, but it needs to be someone that knows the tactics to get wins and how to teach the squad how to do it.

Seibold was a teacher and has ideas on the current game, but it was just information overload... like teaching 5 year olds high school maths. Will be interesting to see how Manly go and maybe their senior players are smart enough to take it on.... or maybe it will fall in a heap and it's just Turbo and strapping that is keeping the team together.

We're in a weird spot at the moment, because the squad is young, but dont know how to win games... they need to be taught... but we have no senior vets in the squad that are also regular top 17 guys to lead the way on the field until those guys are up to speed.

Reynolds is basically taking all of that responsibility on himself... Patty is putting his hand up and showing leadership and smarts beyond his years as well, but they cant do it alone and they need the guys around them to know what is required to help them.

Staggs has played 120 games and is one of the leaders at the club, but he still can't make a read in defence.... he thinks helping the team is to come shooting out of the line and missing a tackle on the 5/8 to leave his edge scrambling and trying to shut down a block play with an overlap... his best reads in defence are when he's just going 1v1 with his opposite... it's when he tries to do it himself that it all falls apart.

Payne has over 100 games and is another leader, but he thinks his job is to take hitups, run decoys, etc. what they need is Payne to be a real game changer when the opportunity arises. The bloke is huge and agile... he should be one of our most dangerous options inside the 10m. Every defence should be spotting up where Payne is and having to load up on him in defence and if they ever dont do that he should be able to notice it and yelling at his hooker to just give him the ball, but he rarely ever scores a try because he doesnt think it's his job to put himself in a position to score.

Patty last week against Dolphins, put himself in the position to score, because he could see that it was on... it's not Patty's job to run decoys or crash plays because he's the link man, but he sees the play, takes himself out of the system and puts himself there for the pass to score. That should be Payne, Piakura or Riki doing that.

These aren't things that have magically appeared since 2021 though... they've been there for fucking years.

The 2015 team failed to keep competing after the GF because that was also a flash in the pan.

Where was the continued development for Milf, Bhunt, Kodi, etc. ... there was also like no structure in 2015 either... Bhunt and Milf were very heads up players and high octane offence... defence was scramble for your life and still conceding 60m sets.

Where was Macca's development after he debuted in like 2009... with Lockyer playing alongside him. He regressed into a tackle bot instead of improving to provide more from hooker.

Bhunt's kicking game improved dramatically in one off season after he moved to St George.... why did it never evolve from bombs to the corner on 5th at Broncos. The same as it was for Pwall for fucking years.

As unlikely as it is, who is to say we haven't?

Even with Ciraldo, I'll say it again, he is last year's Kevvie. Will he end up a great coach? Possibly but at this point who knows.

Remember last year when we had Herbie and Kotoni swapping sides and were running all sorts of structured plays at opposition in addition to our ad lib stuff? We also had one of the very best defenses in the league too.

And let's not forget last year's Dally M Coach of The Year who was the next big thing until this year when his side finished below us.

Even some of the very best coaches have looked like heading for the exit door before coming good.

In the AFL alone, there is three-time premiership coach Damian Hardwick, the current second place team coach Ken Hinkley who is always one loss away from having his head cut off again, Sam Mitchell currently coaching the team to beat in Hawthorn and premiership winning coach - Luke Beveridge.

I'm still backing Kevvie to have the team firing next year if we can get two or three signing decisions right, have a fitness first focused preseason and have a bit more luck with injuries. I reckon 2025 will be a good year.
....it's the hope that kills ya...!

That one Origin when he was in camp and learning from Cameron Smith he showed signs of improvements .
Then he broke his thumb and dislocated his elbow and regressed dramatically .
Understandably so .

A good listen for anyone wanting to know a bit more about Michael Maguire
