Who's Your Man To Watch This Season?

yeah corey is one tuff dude....

He's about as tough as Elton John is straight.

The dark horse(s) of 2008 would have to have been either Kemp or Ennis IMO, and I think it will be one of our fringe players on the final year of their contract who will shine.

Seriously - so much to anticipate in 09. Most probably be the last year of either Locky and/or Hunt at the Broncos, Hodges is about to fade into oblivion, Israel Falou (need I say more), Dave Taylor might finally get a go, but for me the man (men) to watch is our whole new forward pack.

The combination of size, skill and mobilty is really positive. A good mix but frighteningly unproven. If they gel/bond well, it could be something very special.

In fact, our entire season depends on our forward pack.

There is a bit of a bottle neck for back rows posistions but I think big Palmer Wapau might be able to secure himself a bench spot before the year is out. He has been training full time with the Broncos and its already paid dividends. The Big fella is looking as fit as a fiddle.
If he is able to adjsut to the speed of NRL (And after a few games I have no doubt he will) I reckon he will become an integeral part of the Broncos 17

Agreed, his definitely one I would love to see make the grade at the Broncos, his really got the potential to be a real weapon in the forwards for the Broncos. But in saying that I still feel Kenny is the player to watch out for, his come a long one in just one season IMO and will only improve.

For me the man to watch is Locky, for so many reasons.

Is he fit, can he reclaim the form we all want him to, will this be his last season. Unfortunately while is aura is around the club will always rely on him and whilst I'd love to see Wally or K step up and take command even with him out there, Locky is still the man.

Also looking forward to watching the backrow along with everyone else here, and a big season from DT.

Nick Kenny and Aaron Gorrell. I have a big feeling that Nick Kenny is in for a strong year, and a starting spot will just get the best out of him. And as for Aaron Gorrell, I was very impressed with how he played at St. George, but after 2 (?) years of playing in the ESL, I dunno if he can get back to that form straight away. I mean it took Jamie Lyon a whole season to start showing us what he's capable of again...but if Gorrell adjusts immediately, I'll be a very happy man. He's a quality hooker, he could add to us what Ennis added last year, though probably not quite as effectively.

Gorrell is a stop gap at best in my opinion. McCullough is the future of our 9 spot, I just hope he gets some games this year so he doesn't get the shits.

Pfffft at all this 'Taylor might finally get a go' crap. I'm a big Taylor fan but reality is he was given ample opportunity last season to prove himself and was a massively unfit powderpuff. I'll have him in my 17 for round 1 this year but if he shows the same form as he did in 08 then I'll be happy to see him back in Comets colours.

Are you all the same people that wanted too see Joel Moon 'given a go' last season? Probably would've won the semi against Melbourne without Moon in the side.

Agreed, Taylor needs to stand up when given the opportunity and his been given them under Bennett, saying he didn't is just making excuses for him not to put in and thats something we can't afford to let our players have, people whinge about Parker's form, well his not the only one who needs to step up so don't play favourites. Kenny was given the same opportunities and took them with both hands and his gone from just being a player there for depth to being a contender for a starting spot and he did it with hard work, I want Taylor to shine but his the one who has to make it happen.

I don't like the way Wayne handles young/under pressure players sometimes. If they make a couple of mistakes he hooks them and doesn't give them another go all game. I think Taylor suffered considerably from confidence issues due to this happening to him quite often. He needs to be given more time out in the middle because I think last year ended up being a write off for him because of both WB denting his confidence and also Dave himself not putting in the hard yards.

You can also make the arguement that keeping players out there who are young/under pressure and they continue to make mistakes in a game can be damaging to their progression as well and I have seen Bennett criticised for doing so in the past and I would not be surprised to see Bennett criticised by the same people criticising him for giving him the hook if he had kept him out there and continued to make mistakes/confidence issues. It's easy to criticise from the stands, and while he may not have always got it right I would rather still rather leave it in the hands of someone who knows how to do their job and has proven it over many years.

I see your point both sides have negatives. I just think he should even late in the match if the game is dead one way or the other give the guy another run after have a word to him would do more good than harm. I just think Taylor got down on himself and looked like he was worried about making mistakes rather than unleashing like he should be on opponents.

Yeah I can understand that perspective too, I guess my point is I don't want players to think that a free ride in first grade is a given and using external factors as an excuse not to put in is just not on. Sure Taylor was taken off the field at times it may have been better to keep him on but I still don't think he was putting in as hard as he could have when he was on and that really only hurts his development.

I think Nick Kenny will have a big year. He really stepped up last season and i think we'll see the same this year.

Agreed. As well as Taylor, Kemp is a noted example of Wayne not handling younger players well at times. Denan was ready for the step up for 18 months before he finally got a regular showing in the team... which only happened because of Michaels' injury anyway! Hope Ivan works differently.

Ivan won't work differently he just hired Devere to take a youngsters spot!!!!!!

Utter Bullshit Jeb. Bennett did not give Taylor a decent shot at establishing himself. Playing half an hour in only a handful of games throughout the season is NOT the best way to go about getting a player into the team. And ok, Taylor wasn't performing as well as we all had hoped in the opportunities he did have, but perhaps that reflected how he was being treated at the club? I wouldn't be surprised at all.

And as for Moon, I remember you having a go at him last season too and I have no idea where all the hate came from. Moon was a solid center and played very well for us on many occasions last year. He was given a go and IMO it's a shame he left. Personally I was quite furious a few times over the season that Bennett persisted with someone as useless as Reece Robinson instead of pushing Boyd/Michaels out to the wing and having Moon partner Hodges in the centers.
