I love hearing stories about the crafty powers that be at the maroons who work things in their best interest before the blews find out....like pushing Inglis's papers through to play for QLD when he was 15, and when they went to the Blews in 01 before the series started to see if they could call on internationals [icon_shady so sly. so awesome.

LOL @ ALL OF YOU.

Mick is 100% correct, the rest of you are selling out your own morales to make RL more of a spectacle.

Example A; "Jason" is born in Argentina. He lives there until he is 8, then his parents move to Australia. Jason spends the rest of his life in Australia. He gets a job and is working away when *bam* Border Security smashes through his door!
:D "Jason, you are being deported. You are an illegal immigrant, without a work visa"
 "But I've been here all my life Sir."
:D "Doesn't matter Jason, you are an Argentinian"

Jason, hasn't become an Australian Citizen.

Example B; A year after arriving in Australia, Jason's parents take Jason and the family along and they all get Australian Citizenship and are proud to be part of this great nation. *Bam* Border security!
:D "Jason, you are being deported. You are an illegal immigrant..."
 "Sorry champ, I'm an Aussie"
:D "Shit, sorry mate. Have a XXXX!"

How many of you get upset when you hear of people that have spent 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50 years in Australia and never got citizenship?

Then you turn around and say that footy players, who have citizenship, can't represent Australia? Why do we, this great multicultral society, even bother with citizenship then????

LOL...being a footy player doesn't make someone less of an individual of society.

I guess, really, we should only let aboriginals play for Australia! The Irish, Welsh, English, Polish, German, Italian, Samoan, Tongan and NZ sides would be pretty good however.

The point that you are missing out on Hammo is the world cup could in the future generate a lot of money if done correctly ie money back to increase the cap growing the game

this crap about multicultural society where not saying leave our country were staying everybody lets work together and give this game the credit it deserves lets strengthens the lesser countries and have 50 more interesting international games other than a world cup where the top 8 nrl side could win if Aus wasnt in it

Samoa too have plenty of stars to pick from and will open their 2008 campaign with the much-anticipated clash with Tonga at Penrith’s CUA Stadium on October 31 and meet Ireland on November 5 at Parramatta Stadium.

All three squads were announced today at CUA Stadium and Vagana believes they will all be fielding their strongest sides ever in a World Cup.

“The standard of players available is outstanding,†he said. “We are very excited about playing in the World Cup and in particular our clash with Tonga.

“The rivalry between the two nations goes back hundreds of years when they were fighting wars and invading islands.

“This match will be the same … minus the spears and canoes.â€Â

The 29-day 2008 RLWC tournament begins on October 25 with England and Papua New Guinea clashing in Townsville and ends with the already sold-out Final at Suncorp Stadium on November 22.

now thats 25 great games to watch in the world cup

how many more games would you watch with the likes of izzy in tongan side

hunt in the nz side

Um...dude, I started the thread. Read my first post and I think you'll get that I'm not missing the point.

But to say that players can't play for Australia, which 95% of the time is the country they call home, is plain Un-Australian. Whether it's good for the game or not.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to play for Australia. If they want to, then go nuts. What I'm trying to say is I think there would be a few players who would be influenced in choosing which country to represent from the opportunity to play State of Origin, easily the most elite level of Rugby league. I think if we allowed players born outside of Aus to play SOO, we would see a few more choose to represent their country of birth at the International level.

Fact of the matter is though we still only have 3 competitive teams and at times 2 of those teams aren't even competitive. Compared to other World Cups where you can't safely predict the winner at the start of the tournament.

Absolutely. But to then call off everything international because of it will never help that situation.

I still can't stand the fact that the RL World Cup gets SO much bad press compared with the RU one... where you still routinely see 150-point routs over the likes of Georgia and Namibia.

There is floggings in every WC tournament mate, no matter what sport. And you know the RL will always be my number 1 sport, but who would argue that the RL World Cup doesn't deserve the bad press campared to RU, where there is Australia, NZ, England, France, South Africa, Ireland, Wales, Argentina and Scotland all capable of beating each other. Compared to the RL World Cup, there is only 3 teams with any remote realistic chance.

Um New Zealand losing to Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Argentina...no.

Beating each other in a one-off, yes.

NZ, England and Australia all have a chance at winning the RL world cup.

In RU last year, it was NZ and South Africa the two most likely, with Australia, England and even France as outside chances to really win the whole tournament, not just a match here or there on luck.

So yeah, I'd say considering that RU only has two more competitive and CONSISTENT international teams than league, I'd say our bad press isn't balanced.

League ALWAYS gets more bad press than any other sport in this country, and I simply don't understand why.

Wales are the current six nations champs so there no easy beats (they also won it in 2004 i think?), Also Argentina finished ahead of France in the group stages and then beat them in the bronze medal play off! NZ and South Africa were raging favourites, but there were 6 or 7 other teams who could have won it (just like in the 06' Soccer world cup were no one outside Brazil and Germany was given much of a shot!!)

*could*

That's just it.

Tonga or Samoa could definitely win the RLWC. Hell, look at the strength of some of their line-ups! It's not inconceivable.

I stand by what I said. Sure, every team has got a chance. But there wasn't more than 4-5 teams that could've won the RUWC last year.

Ireland and Wales could on their day. Scotland and Argentina are quite unlikely though.

Has Wiki retired from playing for the cousi bros?
They need david Kidwell in there or is he already in the squad?

Kidwell won't do alot for them. They really needed the go forward of Asotasi and the attacking prowess of SBW. They have no chance now. I honestly think the kiwis will struggle against Australia and possibly even England.

If that day was in 1905 maybe.

Kidwell won't do alot for them

He's a penalty machine, I agree he'll be hopeless.
