OFFICIAL Xavier Coates Leaves Broncos

Greg Alexander:

“I would be stunned if Xavier Coates goes to the Storm. The Storm are the type of club that won’t pay big money for wingers, otherwise they’d keep Josh Addo-Carr. In their salary cap break-up and who gets the money at the Storm, it will be their spine. It’ll be Papenhuyzen, Munster and they’ve just signed Jahrome Hughes on a $800,000 deal, and it’ll also be Harry Grant."

“They’ll also desperately want to keep Brandon Smith, but he wants to play dummy-half. They spend their money and fill up the other spots, this is why the Storm have been so good. They fill up players on the rest of the team for players on value money. I can’t see the Melbourne Storm paying half a million which is what Xavier Coates would be asking for. They can’t afford to pay half a million for a winger.”

$200k on Books A.

Inglis wasn't a spine player but they were very happy to "value" his position through any means necessary.

Didn’t Coates come out only a few weeks ago and declare he loves the club and wants to be a bronco for life...? Urging fans to stay loyal... Stinks if he’s said all this and then ***** off to our most hated rival ever.
I wouldn't hold that against him. Circumstances change. Look at the rhetoric coming out the club. The entire Tom Dearden fiasco. The horse trading of players like Lodge and Macca.

We also don't know whether there are catastrophic personality clashes within the playing group that compel some to leave, despite preferring to stay at the club, or even just in the region. Look at what Staggs is demanding. That's a dead canary on a swivel seat if I've ever seen one.

Plus how many times does he find himself 1 on 3 in defence? He can't be happy about being made look like an idiot every game. Whether it's his fault or not. He's probably blaming his inside defenders.

I think if you look at Staggs when he was playing ISC his defensive lapses were exact same. He’s lazy when it comes to warming the shoulder, it’s folly to say it’s his inside team mates.

I don't think he's a great tackler, for one. But he's always drifting out of position, which suggests there's some massive disconnect going on out there. Maybe it would help if the team had a captain.

I get your point but look at Coates’ defence? His might be even worse and he keeps coming off his wing. That’s not a disconnect in teamwork to me, it’s just a dumb shit that has still a few years to go before he can consider himself properly developed. He should never have been playing first grade last year, but COVID and Pies stuffed that up.

If Coates does go to the Storm I’m betting they put him back into ISC to get his defence sorted.

He should be in ISC sorting that out now. Maybe having Karmichael Hunt floating around might help some of these issues.

Even that is an issue for the NRL. SBW can walk into the Roosters side after playing for the All Blacks but we want KHunt simply on a train a trial deal and there is a hold up while they evaluate it. It’s a frickin joke.

That is partly on us. There is no reason we couldn’t have signed Karmichael to a position within the top 30, it would just have been a terrible idea to do so. All players have to be registered with the NRL. K wasn’t because he has been out if the game so long, whereas someone like Danny Levi already was, hence why we could sign him and then virtually play him the next day.

Different story with Karmichael though. I have no issue with the NRL evaluating a player that hasn’t played in 12 years. They do have a duty of care afterall…

If Coates leaves, throw him in qcup for the year and let him rot. Talks about loving the jersey, if he leaves he quickly becomes one of my most hated.

maybe see if we can trade him for Brandon Smith

They aren’t evaluating it to make sure he is up to it or it is safe for him, they are evaluating it to make sure we have to pay the maximum.

I keep seeing this. I don’t see why they would do that. They can just wait until next season and keep both. They have good wingers as it is this year and he won’t add much of anything to their team until JAC leaves.

No massive loss imo as he is at the moment. However, enter the storm system and he will be ‘another one lost’.
Id like to see Isaako pushed onto the wing and we get a big name 1 & 7.
Sick and tired of how a heap of these young blokes (who landed us a spoon) are just walking out on the club that poured in so much time, money and effort but because it’s the broncos it’s just ‘what happens’.
I still worry we won’t land a big name spine player for 2022. It’s looking as though it’ll be Sezer, Mbye or Widdop whom in my opinion are not big named spine players.
At least get Capewell and Drinkwater here. That’ll lessen the hurt a little I guess.
Id love to see the club offer S.Walker 900k, if nothing else to ask questions of the Roosters.

I reckon he has already signed and it is in the cooling off period.
If it's the only way our r+r team can be saved from itself then good. Should not be paying 1 cent over 300k for him. If we let him and Kotoni walk and replace them with middle of the road signings on low wage, we could have up to 500k extra to spend on our spine. When Grant is off contract throw the extra bank at him.

Let him walk and sign Rapana to replace him.

It would be dissapointing to lose him but with so many problem areas that we need to overhaul in our roster it really isn't wise to be outlaying a lot of money or getting into a bidding war over an Outside Back.

I'd be fine with us prioritising our spine first and foremost and then looking to use what's left after that for any other retention and recruitment efforts.
