I think there is a slight but important difference between hero worship and role models.

"I want to be like Superman when I grow up" is just as likely to happen as "I want to be like Ben Barba when I grow up" for most kids.

I'm not really sure of your point in relation to my post

And again, the whole "role model" thing is not the reason players get dragged over the coals for this. It is entirely because it makes the club and game look bad.

To the general public while they might agree that lots of 20-year-old idiots would say rude and offensive things to women on a night out on the piss it doesn't make it acceptable! And many people won't want to spend money on tickets, merchandise, memberships for a club that doesn't stamp on such behaviour. And some sponsors won't want to see their logo on the chest of a player who tells a female journalist to "suck me off you dumb dog".

I know, it's ridiculous and unfair. I mean, I'd LOVE to associate myself with guys who can run, tackle and kick a football and display such wonderful poetry and respect to women...

Hammo is 100% right. If you want to let your players let loose then go somewhere they won't be watched and won't be recognised.

I always get torn in my thinking when things like this happen. The logic that it shouldn't happen and all the associated reasons why are 100% correct but the reality is things like this will happen when you have a group of young men or women on the drink.

Not a lot of good decisions get made, least of all by the TV stations who were asked to not turn up but do they respect the request?

No, they turn up and stick a camera over the fence or hang out of a helicopter. The complaining they are doing is all about creating a story and that is what sh@ts most ppl about it.

I do take your point, but in all fairness the only reason channel nine got the audio was because one of the idiots opened the window and hurled the abuse at the reporter. Every other team invites the media in to get their interviews and then they leave, why couldn't the dogs do this?

To be honest my first impressions were 'boys will be boys' etc etc. But too be honest when I was in my early 20's (which was only a few years ago) I was always drinking with my mates and not once have I ever even thought about saying "suck me off you dumb dog" and "I want to come and punch you in the face" to a women... I my opinion it is disgusting and undefendable... but I'm sure they will just sweep it under the carpet, after all the fat f*** from their major sponser and Lauryn Eagle think it's all sweet, so hey!

Yes it's a story.

We have a Celebrate Women in League Round & then we have a cretin screaming out to a female reporter to suck him off & calling her a dog etc.

I'm not defending the Dogs whatsoever, I am saying the reason Ch9 went there was hoping for this to happen, that's what sh@its me about the whole thing. What is newsworthy about an end of season pissup anyway, not much until you get lucky enough for some moron to yell stuff.

If she went to the zoo and jumped in the lions cage and got bitten we'd be saying how dumb she was. I'm not saying she deserved the abuse but she expected/hoped for it that's why she was there.

Still the reality of all this hasn't changed, the TV stations will act like this and the Footy clubs have to be smarter how they stop young blokes being idiots on the drink. Good luck with that.

Kaz, I have worked in nightclubs a lot as a second job and let me tell you the womens behaviour in so many cases was mind blowingly bad. I don't judge all women on what I used to see and I'm sure not going to judge the whole of the league on what some drunk moron called out.

What I also find really bizarre about this whole thing is the defence that's being peddled by the boss of Jaycar that "it happens in every bar in Sydney".

Firstly, I highly doubt that when a woman walks into a bar someone shouts at her "suck me off you dumb dog" and then gets told that he "want's to come over there and punch you in the face". If this is the case then that is horrifying.

Secondly, I'm pretty confident that the "everyone else was doing it mum" defence failed to work past 10 years of age. I mean if someone gets done for assault and says to the judge, "hey people assault each other each weekend", the judges response is not gonna be "really? I never realised that, case dismissed"

Once again I see your point, but this is routine stuff. The media goes to every clubs Mad Monday, the club invites them in, lets them ask their questions, they leave and the party continues. There are 15 other clubs whose players didn't see the need to open a window and hurl disgusting abuse at a female, whether she be a reporter or not. They didn't have to open the window, they didn't have to block out the media - It was their decisions and they should pay the consequence.

"If she went to the zoo and jumped in the lions cage and got bitten we'd be saying how dumb she was. I'm not saying she deserved the abuse but she expected/hoped for it that's why she was there."

Yes we would be saying how dumb is she, because if you go into a lions cage it is a reasonable expectation that you will get bitten. Going to a mad monday celebration it is a reasonable expectation to see players p***ed, swearing and acting silly. If that were the case no one would care. I do not believe that in this day and age it is a reasonable expectation to be to be called "a dumb dog" "suck me off" and "I want to come and punch you in the face"...

The media were at all Mad Monday's & only one team were acting like f@ckwits.

Channel 9 in Brisbane showed the Broncos on some boat.

All they were doing was sitting on deck. Several of the players waved to the Channel 9 crew.

Don't know if the players were p!ssed off that they were being filmed etc, but they didn't show it.

Since Hasler has taken over at the Dogs are just doing the minimum required interviews. (Hasler had the same mindset at Manly)

Should have Princess Kate, a role model and a figure constantly in the public eye and under a constant threat of paparazzi, kept her top on too then?

Or Prince Harry for that matter.

I'm sorry and I mean no offence but you couldn't have missed the point more if you tried.

You are comparing a woman that has had her photo taken topless in a private moment by sleazy paparazzi, to a vile excuse for a human being that went out of his way to verbal abuse a female reporter by calling her a dumb dog, telling her to "suck him off" and threatening to punch her in the face??? How is that even in the same ballpark

Just a bit of a difference.

Princess Catherine was over a 1km away.

Channel 9 weren't that far away.

The Players etc knew that they were there, if they didn't they wouldn't have yelled anything out.

Helicopter was used when they were outside.

Does anyone expect every player will always go through the offseason and their down time without an incident in their whole career? No. They're human. Most of them below average intelligence humans, but humans nonetheless.

But what is reasonable to expect is swift action - immediate, unreserved apologies from player(s) and club. For serious matters fines and suspensions (this is one case where apology is fine IMO).

Instead we've had every man and his dog (pardon the pun) trying to pin it on the media for being pricks.

Coxy I think you have nailed it. I think if the person came forward, made a genuine apology everyone would be fine with it, hell we all make mistakes.

The dogs are now saying that every man and his dog were now there, a few days ago it was a private function so you can see how this is gonna pan out. "after an extensive investigation the person has been revealed to be Joe Public, while the club is disappointed that one of our fans has acted this way, there is nothing else we can do blah blah blah bull**** bull**** bull****

Fully agree with the fine, swift action etc the player/s should be named and shamed as well.
The media should also be put in the spotlight for it's part and it won't be.
