Having seen the text, assuming it's real obviously, I'd be worried about whether the lines mentioned involved anyone else aside from Pearce. They used the word "they", not "he". Hopefully it's just the eastern hipster trash way of speaking, there'd be nothing worse than heading to a new town and being led over a cliff by your captain in thr first week.

I would be almost certain that by 'they' it means more than one. They never means one person, I don't care how hipster, douchebag they are.
