Not quite sure what you're point is......you've just admitted that it's "do-able, hard, but do-able", of which I agree. Your father's, much like my own fathers 45-55K, 30 years ago, would be the equivalent now (IMO) to about 80K.
My point is that 100K/yr isn't as much as you think for a family to flourish on......and those that think it is, aren't trying to raise a teenage family.

Different story if you're content to live alone, in a 2 br apartment.....plonking away at your keyboard. Others aspire to bigger things.....

Everyone is forgetting that he has earned shitloads in the past. At some point in time he should have realised that the money wouldn't last forever. He should have set himself up that he'd be mortgage-free and have investments in place that could give him a residual income for the remainder of his non-playing life. Even if it's not enough to live on it'd be enough to supplement a normal wage to make him more comfortable.

Financial and broncos talk in the same thread. It doesn't get any better than this.

That's his current wage. It was a lot less back in the day. And if you're gonna call me a keyboard warrior, just do it. I have a job, I have friends, I play sport and enjoy my life as is. Could it be better? Sure, but to imply I live a lesser life because I don't see kids in my future is just being an arsehole.

The threads been derailed enough, so I won't continue. We agree to disagree

Hi Morks.....I removed Benji Marshall from the context of the discussion. My comments since have been related to anyone's situation that I've been describing.

How the hell does a once top NRL player in this age, at the end of his career, still have a mortgage????

It only takes 2 years salary to buy a decent house

Fair enough......I wasn't trying to be an arsehole. I was just trying to point out that situations can vary from person to person and should be considered thoroughly, before announcing that 100K is more than enough for anybody to live on.

I was actually interested to know if anyone else in a similar situation to myself agrees or disagrees with me that 100K aint what it used to be.

Cheers.

I think Benji's value to the team increases with Hunt leaving next year. Suddenly our depth in the halves isn't looking so good. I think he'd reasonably be able to expect a regular spot in the 17 next year. He has performed as well as could be asked whenever he has been selected this year. A bit of a pay rise seems reasonable to me. Nothing crazy of course, but he represents more than minimum NRL wage value to the 2018 Broncos.

As others have pointed out though, retention priorities lie with guys like Jimmy first. I back Broncos management to sort it out.

I think you're on to something. Once you factor in dependents, mortgage and such, it's doable, but it's not necessarily a comfortable arrangement.

More to the point, even if it is equitable, you have to be thinking of your family. Just because you can make it work doesn't mean you should take less than commensurate with your experience, skill set, and overall potential as an asset to your employer.

Taking less is failing on your responsibility to provide for those under your care.

I agree with everything you said except personally, I can see TPJ being an absolute weapon at lock. Does all the grunt work expected of a big man and has a mean offload. I would like to see Bird take Moga's spot because imagine a team with a left side of Glenn, Milf, Bird, Oats and a right side of Niko, Gillo, Jimmy, and Kahu. With Boyd popping up for sweeping plays on either side. That gives us unbelievable attacking threats across the entire park. Moving TPJ to lock also free up a bench spot for Offa, who is starting to show signs of potential again after his slight regression.

1. Boyd
2. Oates
3. Bird
4. Roberts
5. Kahu
6. Milf
7. Niko
8. McGuire
9. Macca
10. Sims
11. Glenn
12. Gillo
13. TPJ

14. Benji
15. Thaiday
16. Blair
17. Offa

I think that line up perfectly spreads out talent across the entire field without leaving any weak spots.

I agree with nearly all of that except the replacing of Blair with Sims.
Blair has a crucial role in our team and we've always struggled starting with Sims. I would bring Sims on later for impact. He can bring on some big hits defensively when he comes on later. Give Blair a licence to offload like we did in 2015. We'll go back to playing some fantastic attacking football.

We can swap Marshall and Niko's roles later in the season if Niko isn't working out.

Then as soon as our promising young forwards are ready, have them replace Sims and Thaiday the following year.

Even your strawman argument is fiscally wasteful.

All this will come down to what Benji and his manager think he is worth after signs of rejuvenation this season.
He's not a starting halfback anymore but as he has proved this season is a very handy utility to have in a side, so what's a good utility worth? What would Kodi have been on? Or Hunt a few seasons back? My guess would be 2-250k?
Regardless of his last few seasons Bennett took a gamble on him and threw him a 100k lifeline, my guess is he'll be offered an upgrade based on him being a utility.
What he offers the team as a mentor is probably priceless but things are tight and we have key positions to lock down.

This is my first post so bear with me... I would really like Benji Marshall to stay on next year. I think he brings a calmness & direction to our young guys & the Origin period was pretty good compared to other years. The Broncos picked him up this year for a song & granted we didn't know how he'd go, but he has been great. I think he is worth at least $200,000 & I have sent an email to the Broncos urging them not to let him leave. If anyone else feels this way, then maybe the Broncos may take notice of their fans if enough people email them with their support of Benji. I think what he can teach the young halves would be invaluable & he will be great through next year's Origin series.

They may not have 200 to give him and we don't know what sort of offers he has fielded from other clubs. I agree with everything you said about Benji though, I would love to see him back next year and I am quietly confident that we will.

He could get a third party deal to supplement his NRL Contract perhaps?

he can ... but that's his manager's responsibility, not the Broncos.

for third party deals to be exempt from the cap, his manager needs to secure them without assistance from the club
