In hindsight, a merciless approach to Hunt’s infamous performance in the gf (aka chucking him on the bench or phasing him out of the team like we did last year, only with Taylor in Knik’s position) would have served us better, with Taylor having a few years under his belt by now. Hunt would also be too far gone as a player to be haunting us at the dragons. Instead we went all in on a guy who wasn’t what we needed and never would be.

Most players give clubs no loyalty, so they should expect none in return unless they earn it (think Parker, jt, Smith, hell, even Thaiday). The roosters and storm are pros at treating their players like mere chess pieces and have the success to show for it.

Edit: Pearce at the roosters is a perfect example. He’s a better player than Hunt, but they still weren’t afraid to say cya later when a better prospect came along because they knew Mitch wasn’t the right guy to lead them to a prem.

That is 100% our scouts not having a decent eye for talent, or our club getting them, and the people who need to agree they are going to be decent, not playing them for fear of them not being decent. Instead of having a good half, we are stuck with one that is doing his best.

Using hindsight is unfair but there are people paid too ensure we keep the best players. Considering what’s been in our system and we are currently running out Milford/Nikorima as halves tells me our people haven’t done a very good job.

i think it has more to do with the scouts we have not identifying and developing correctly. we sign a hell of a lot of kids and as noted before the cronies at the moment use the funnel approach. fill the top up and see what falls through at the bottom.

I know soccer does the same to a degree but I can guarantee their system is a lot more refined and set up like a proper business with high level discussions involving all scouts which report to the top and then they sort from there.

Seems like our approach is let the big guys know and thats it, let them sort it out.

I can tell you this, have no idea if it applies to football in QRL.....

You look at a kid for 4-5 years from 13's up to C grade, goes alright - doesn't set the world on fire, isnt huge, hasn't got a scruff of facial hair yet. One or two years later, still kicking around gets a job, some maturity, then hormones hit and next minute hes a talent. The books are full already - as the scouts have been picking whats in front of them, so the kid gets snapped up or singed up elsewhere.

No scout can predict this.
