Boyd bombshell: Maroons star 'done' with rep footy

So is love.

I can't answer that, because neither of them were here, and we haven't had a captain / players who do what they do.
Well similarly - did you like Hodges when he was at the Roosters? What about when he came back to Brisbane?

I hated him, never wanted him back.
But then he matured a little but still played with the same mongrel I despised at the Roosters (the niggle, the in your face play - I still remember him standing over Steve Turner after bulldozing him over the sideline down in Melbourne and then getting in Matt King’s face - loved it!), so I grew to love having him in the team.

Same applies for Ennis. Couldn’t stand him when he played for someone else, but it was great when he was at the Broncos.

Same could easily be said about Parker. Very polarising player (I imagine that’s why he and Ennis are such good mates).

Obviously, these are just my opinions. But unless a player is flippantly breaking the rules, I would imagine most on here would support them if they were wearing our jersey and contributing to our success.

Does anyone have a favourite memory of Boyd playing for QLD?

The 2013 Origin decider in Sydney is mine personally.

Boyd had two massive plays in that game. The first was grounding the ball in-goal. NSW were claiming a try but replays show Boyd slid in and got a fingertip to the ball - that's all you need.

Later in the second half he made a huge bust when we were coming out of our own half. NSW were coming to get us. I'm not sure if it was a kick return or he linked up with Slater but he picked up about 40m and ensured we started the set in Blues territory.

I remember thinking they were massive plays.

His two tries on debut were also a highlight. What about you? Any moments of his career that stand out?

Ps If you're going to trot out that old chestnut of 'all he had to was fall over the line for his tries' or 'anyone could play outside Inglis' spare me.

I really wasn't a full time supporter in those days. I followed the lead of hating him when he ran out for the Toowoomba trial when he first came back, but I was influenced by those who believed he had walked out on the club.

I'm not sure where this line of questioning fits with me not liking two players who constantly complain to the ref. Parker, Hodges, Boyd, etc. would plead their case, hear the answer, and leave. JT and CS will waste time, continue to argue, and look like whingy little bitches. It's not to change that decision, it's to stop the refs blowing penalties so they don't have to deal with those two.

Off the top of my head, smashing Gasnier twice. I hated that prick. I found the video!

Haha Love It!

Interesting that Boyd came in off his wing both times.

Let that be a lesson. It drives me mental these days when players rush in for a big hit and either:

A) Fail to wrap the ball up
B) Fail to wrap the man up
C) Fail to do both!

It should be an automatic demotion to reserve grade for a week. That's how much it annoys me.

IIRC he came off the wing because Tonga was playing with a dislocated shoulder. Boyd had to cover both positions in defence.

I’m simply providing examples of how people (as I very much doubt I’m alone in having the aforementioned views on said players) dislike players when they do something for a team that isn’t the Broncos, but ask the question would you feel the same if they did it for us.

I could be wrong, but I think they’re pretty reasonable questions. I also think they’re pretty valid points that most honest fans would admit to.

I certainly can. I mean, I passionately dislike Smith, but I’m sure I wouldn’t had he have been here winning us games with his skill and questionable tactics. After all, they may be against the spirit of the game, but they’re not against the rules.

I’m just being honest and I agree with you, I really don’t like the tactics either. But when they won us games (for QLD and Australia) I was far more accommodating of them than I am when he does it for the Storm. Same applies for JT.

Anyway - different strokes for different folks I suppose.

I was wondering how long it was going to take until someone posted this.

The fact that it took 4 pages is a little depressing. Rather than congratulate him on his achievements at the highest level of the game, it's turned into a bash Boyd thread.

Good point, but retiring midway through the series is an odd thing to do. Look at all the crap Smith copped on this forum when he did it a few weeks back, and he was the captain.

Huge difference between the captain and most player to the side pulls stumps 3 weeks before the series and a winger that wasn't selected anyway makes the retirement official.

I realise that but with just one or 2 injuries we would be relying on him.

I disagree, we had one of the biggest injury crisis we have including missing our fullback and he still wasn't selected. It's not the same as Smith. Fact.

I'm so heartily sick of the braindead references to the healthy relationship Boyd has with his mentor.

Bit of a side topic, but do you really think it's healthy? I get Boyd has had issues in his life, and I get that Bennett has been a great help and influence with this, but I find it a little weird/unhealthy how he's followed him around so much. Each to their own though, if it works for him/them, then good on them.

But how is it unhealthy?

No I don't think it is unhealthy. If you knew even half of Boyd's story you wouldn't think it was unhealthy either.

I have never understood the fascination with it, Kevvie followed Bennett to two clubs and Jackson three. Langmack, Thomas, Farrar and Gillespie all followed Ryan to Wests and Dogs.

I disagree, I think Kevvy had put a line through Boyd's name regardless of how many injuries QLD had. He said the reason Boyd was not selected was poor form, then plays Michael Morgan who is extremely out of form, at fullback, where he has played a limited amount of times.

He also picked the following 'out of form' players without an issue -

Wallace
Papalli
Cooper
Milford
Napa
McGuire (coming straight back from injury without a game)
Hess

IMO flawed as it may be, you don't not pick, a 50 game rep player, second highest origin try scorer, current club captain based on poor form, but then go and select half a team of out of form players, some of whom have played a handful of games.

If anyone has proven that they can perform at the highest level over and over again, it's the 50 game rep player, who's played 100+ games in the position you suddenly have a vacancy.

Kevvy didn't want him, simple. Boyd realised after game 1 that if he didn't get picked when Slater was injured (and Gagai), he wasn't going to be picked and therefore retired.

No point facing the humiliation of being overlooked over and over again whilst fit and available to play. That would be hard to swallow for anyone who has accomplished what Boyd has.

Look at all the panthers who followed Garth Brennan to the Titans as well
