I have never understood the fascination with it, Kevvie followed Bennett to two clubs and Jackson three. Langmack, Thomas, Farrar and Gillespie all followed Ryan to Wests and Dogs.

Who knew there was so many unhealthy relationships in the game.

Bit of a side topic, but do you really think it's healthy? I get Boyd has had issues in his life, and I get that Bennett has been a great help and influence with this, but I find it a little weird/unhealthy how he's followed him around so much. Each to their own though, if it works for him/them, then good on them.

It's a little weird for a grown man but it's not as if Bennett hasn't looked after him financially. For most of his career, especially 2010 and 15, Boyd earned that money. Note the use of the past-tense. "Earned" that money. He isn't earning it now but will continue to get it for the next 3 years after this regardless.

I asked this before but can't recall the answer. I'm sure my No.1 cyber stalker "Tommy" has the info but Boyd was signed on his 4 year deal toward the end of last season, wasn't he? There is no way any other coach would have given him even close to that much money for that long. If he signed that contract at the end of 2015 it would have been a good, fair deal for both parties (club and player). Doubtful any other coach would have made him captain either.

Does anyone have a favourite memory of Boyd playing for QLD?

The 2013 Origin decider in Sydney is mine personally.

Boyd had two massive plays in that game. The first was grounding the ball in-goal. NSW were claiming a try but replays show Boyd slid in and got a fingertip to the ball - that's all you need.

Later in the second half he made a huge bust when we were coming out of our own half. NSW were coming to get us. I'm not sure if it was a kick return or he linked up with Slater but he picked up about 40m and ensured we started the set in Blues territory.

I remember thinking they were massive plays.

His two tries on debut were also a highlight. What about you? Any moments of his career that stand out?

Ps If you're going to trot out that old chestnut of 'all he had to was fall over the line for his tries' or 'anyone could play outside Inglis' spare me.

Mine was when willie tonga hurt his shoulder and Boyd moved in to defend at centre. From memory he smashed gasnier or cooper all night long when they tried to target tonga

Followed him around so much ? Yes, nothing about it sounds unhealthy unless your thinking is influenced by some deep seated problem of your own. He had a father figure, wise and respected who he knew genuinely cared about him. He also got paid well to play for him so it wasn't a hard decision to go to St George. He enjoyed great success from the relationship , probably great personal support and guidance, advice as well while at St George. When WB moved to Newcastle Boyd's contract was probably up for renewal or he had the year in his favour so if something works and you're enjoying the new challenges it's not unreasonable that you'd continue doing what has worked in the past.

When Newcastle became a basket case under Tinkler and he had a chance to truly go home and get well paid into the bargain it was probably a no brainer. I think this particular decision had very little to do with WB and his relationship with WB would have been well down the list, everything else screamed out that it was a good move. I believe if the Broncos had offered him a chance to come home he likely would have irrespective of WBs intentions. Whether he would have received an invite like that is a different matter and I only point it out as the chance to go home would have been enough on it's own merit.

Boyd obviously needed a figurehead at times and Wayne Bennett is most certainly someone I would consider to be an excellent role model. I applaud that in a business as ruthless, aggressive, and territorial as first grade Rugby League, relationships such as this are able to be formed and maintained.

I have been over ....... and over and over and over this on another thread. The answer is obviously that Wayne Bennett was at least partly responsible. The only question is to what extent. Anyone who denies that is letting his or her love for Wayne Bennett hopelessly cloud his or her objective judgement.

I can't remember what thread it was but I'm sure Tommy knows. You can ask him and look over the comments I made on the subject there.

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines... it's not uncommon to see employees move to follow a manger they like working under. It's also not uncommon for a manager to make an offer to former employees in order to get them to follow.

Should it also be considered weird that Cameron Smith and Billy Slater have played all their football under the one coach and have barely entertained moving clubs??
