NEWS Milford: I want to stay

I don't care if he stays or not. At the Broncos we'd kill to be average. Mid table. We don't need a superstar anywhere, we need 17 -30 average guys doing an average job and finishing mid table. No more buying outsiders for big bucks. Big money should be reserved for a player who has done his apprenticeship here and become a superstar, here.

i think buying good players for big bucks in positions we need is still fine. We didn’t need Bird, and Milford wasn’t on real big bucks until his second contract here.

I would 100% be happy for the club to throw a million at a player like Munster, RTS, DCE, Lolo, Tedesco etc:

I'm surprised the Storm haven't locked up Hughes. I think he should be our No. 1 target. We will have the cash to go for him and should give it a shot. This is an opportunity for Donaghy to get early runs on the board (assuming he is officially able to start work for us). Love to see the look on the Storms' faces if he could poach Hughes from them. Tripp would be apoplectic. After that I'd consider Jacks who I think still has potential to improve but is not bad at the moment. Then maybe Reynolds as a stop gap but he is more of a half and I can't see him leaving Sydney even if he leaves Souths.
If the Storm haven't locked up Hughes it's for a very good reason. It's that 'very good reason' that we should be identifying and targeting. Storm let Croft go at a time when he looked to be the goods, but on closer inspection we found he was average and only looked good because of the players he had around him. by that time we had already paid our money.

You'd think Pies would have known better, but hey that's another story.

Again, if the Storm haven't locked up Hughes they obviously have something better in mind. Let's get ahead of the game instead of following it. Ahead of the game, leading, is where we used to be and it's where a club this size with this tremendous supporter base belongs.

Knowing Melbourne they'll probably buy Croft back for cents on the dollar and turn him into the Queensland Halfback by the time DCE is ready to give Origin away.

You’re forgetting that Bellyache will not be with them much longer so I’ve got more chance of turning into some sought after rich dude and scoring some jiggy jiggy with Jessica Alba than Croft has of turning into the Queensland halfback.

Sounds good in theory but Milford by far and away has the best kicking game in our team (yes, Milford’s kicking game is flawed. That says all you need to know about the other options).

I’m all for trading Milford for a better running half, even Staggs would do a good job there but I think that also means we would need to strongly consider finding a halfback who can kick to carry that burden. The idea of Dearden or Croft being our only kicking option is nightmare fuel.
What is walsh's kicking game like? I noticed him kicking for touch in the trial, and he is a left footer (who for some reason tend to strike the ball pretty well).

Could go back to the days locky did a fair bit of kicking from fullback. I also liked turpins long kicks from dummy half too, he was finding space which our halves have been unable to do for several years.

Dearden's connection with the ball when kicking looked better (might be but i think he needs to focus on kick selection and not go back to our default mid field bomb.

Of course Milf wants to stay, the unwritten part of the sentence being ''on the same money''

He's obviously a gifted player who floundered last year along with most of our players. Could be an outstanding squad member at the right price, which is clearly not 1M. Thanks to the gift that keeps on giving, player options, Milf is taking up far too much cap space for his intrinsic value.... Now where is that Storm spreadsheet and formula book I keep hearing about??

Ahead of the game would have been taking all appropriate steps to keep Sam Walker, but as appears to be our usual approach in recent years, we chose the wrong horse to go all in on by the looks of it.

Dearden to Storm from 2022+ would confirm that we are indeed in the worst timeline trajectory and to prepare for mutant rebellions in the coming years.

If Dearden doesn't stay a Bronco, all is lost.

I actually wonder how much of picking the right or wrong horse comes down to development. The Broncos have clearly had a problem with development for years. The Storm and Roosters are the best at it and so while all three clubs seem to have an endless supply of super talented kids coming through, only two of those clubs end up doing anything with it. The Panthers were in a similar boat for a long time but seem to have turned a corner with their kids now seeming to develop properly.

I think the Dragons are still in a similar boat to the Broncos in that they have a lot of good kids coming through but the best ones seem to go elsewhere and thrive. The Tigers have had this issue for years too.

As for the Broncos, is Dearden and better / worse than Walker? Yet Walker (unproven of course) seems to be on a really good upward trajectory. T.Boyd and Paix both seem to have stagnated. Haas and Tino were both coming through at the same time, both similarly talented and I'd argue Tino has EASILY become the better of the two coming through a far better system at the Storm than the Broncs.

I really believe this is a massive problem with the Broncos, whatever system these kids are coming into is not working as well as it should. The talent is still being identified but it isn't being developed properly. Does this come under Nolan?

This is why I have said before, if I were Coates and the Storm came knocking, I'd leave in a heartbeat. I love the Broncos but if I am a super talented kid, I know which club is going to develop me properly and it isn't the club I love.

Ridiculous. The bloke has been nothing but bang average since he started.

I don't think Dearden has shown anything to warrant that kind of claim. Ignoring his off field antics, i would swap Dearden to get Fifita back.
