If we are paying Piakura $400k a year i'd be expecting to see him playing NRL this year and soon. Thats a ridiculous amount of money to pay somebody who hasnt even proved he is a top player in ISC yet.
Geez Wolfie, I never thought I'd here you demanding a young kid gets rushed into our side. You were always advocating for players to be properly developed in ISC. You can't have your cake and eat it mate (Even if it's a quarter of 1/5 of the 25 games remaining?1*?)

Tbf he isn't on $400k yet (if that is even correct) and 1910 mentioned he's struggling atm , no use throwing him in until he earns the right and is playing well. As I mentioned above he still has time to push for later in the season to get some games.

Thats not what i'm saying. I wouldnt play him until he is ready either, and i dont think he is. I'd be fairly sure he is on a good contract. If he is even on $300k its still too much. He's proved nothing and as a club, we are learning nothing. We need to start letting these blokes walk if they arent willing to earn their contracts. You said in your post he shouldnt play until he earns the right, and thats correct. He also shouldnt get paid anywhere near first grade money until he earns that type on contract with his performances. Dont care who it is, or how much potential they have, we shouldn't reward a single player with a good contract until its been earned. We keep getting burned with these contracts.

If we get our culture spot on, show these young blokes they will be rewarded if they perform we will keep them over other clubs imo. We have to make sure we treat them properly and they will want to be in our system. At the moment, we dont seem to have that.

Like i said before, i'm not actually really saying i think he should play as such. Probably badly worded on my part. I'm just over inflated contracts for unproven players. A player worth $300-400k a year should be ready to go. Maybe i'm a bit old fashioned with that, but its just my opinion.

I dont see how we can afford to keep paying these players so much money when proven, NRL ready players are more crucial to our rehabilitation as a club than promising kids. Lets face it, if we dont get our NRL side right, we arent going to have any good young players wanting to play here anyway, they wont want to join a bottom 4 football club . The balance is totally wrong right now imo and if we have to let some good young players walk at this moment in time then so be it.

Hard to say what the bigger picture is. Thought we were well stocked in the forwards, with lengthy contracts. If they didn't offer Walsh, which I agreed with, why this signing? I wanted to keep Walsh but wanted him to earn, and at a rookie rate. Did Kev get spooked after Walsh...

I think our balance is way out too. We need a settled experienced team where we can slowly introduce youngsters into and then slowly turn the roster over.

Unfortunately, we had some academic, useless clown with a certificate from Harvard (for attending one seminar) thinking it would be a great idea to 'burn the boats' and get rid of all our experience in the misguided notion that the youth he brought through would magically turn into a seasoned team of superstars. Worse still, the useless sods in the front office fell for the whole sham -Hook-Line and Sinker.

Not so sure its just Kevvie thats the issue. As a club, i dont care what anyone says, we have lost our aura, but i think the people running it at board level think we still that club that players will take unders to stay at. They are now panicking and dont want to be seen as a club that loses their most promising players so we pay overs. Its madness.

I don't think Turpin is that bad, he gets good service to the forwards and provides a bit of creativity himself at times.. he's also a rock in defense, that's all you want your dummy half to be able to do really and he does that

I don't think anyone we have in the lower grades would do a better job

We've lost all bargaining power so we do need to pay overs , we just need to be smart who we pour the money into.

I think they have overpaid because they lost Walsh.
They haven’t overpaid by much of any... he has much more praise on him than Reece Walsh... and we got him for 400k for 3 years... in 3 years god knows how good he is... 400k for one of the best young players in the country is nothing these days and if he turns out shit and we don’t want his 400k we offer him up... plenty of clubs will pay a good chunk of that for a young second rower that they might get the best out of

Geez, thats almost what it would cost to get Capewell.

Well, Kurt would cost more obviously but, wouldnt it make sense to bring Capewell in and say to Piakura "listen mate, watch this NRL standard 2nd rower play - THIS is the standard needed for YOU to get $400k a year here..."

Look slike we may do it the other way around.

Oh well; im glad he has decided to stay, even if the contract is overs, doesnt really matter, cause we are literally swimming in money come the end of the season....

Can he play NRL now cause he is on a professional contract? Or does he have to wait..?

Whether we like it or not, we have to pay for potential. If it doesnt come off that sucks, but it's a risk we have to take. We paid big bucks for haas when he had made 1 nrl app, but that looks like a bargain now.

Sometimes you gotta put it on red and hope it hits.

the 400k contract won't kick in until next year, he's on a development contract for this year ... meaning he has to wait until later in the year to play NRL.

although i wouldn't rush him... I'd probably keep him in the ISC all year (unless we need him due to injuries)

EDIT: just saw 1910's post in the other thread ... so i stand corrected, since he has been upgraded to top 30 status he can play from next week 👍

It's a upgraded deal so more money this year and ends up being $1.2 over 4 years basically. Keep up dazza

Yep, it definitely looks like a panic move. Particularly given the reports that for an extra 50k a year you could get a consistent 2nd rower with origin experience.
Maybe we are getting Capewell as well. In isolation I don't hate the deal for Piakura it is more than is ideal but I think he is a very good prospect. The problem is when you put it alongside the other deals in the forward pack where we are paying big overs for TPK, Lodge and Flegler. Hopefully we are paying a lot of it from this years cap.
