Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

We are desperate though. I'm okay with it. Quality halfbacks are rare, we desperately need a halfback and a leader. Fourth year is not unbelievable. He'll be 35 in his final year, on 400k. You pay that much to rookies who are still in reserves.

Either the 4th year works out and he's the kind of half who gets better with age, or it doesn't and we're down 400k in 2025, no big deal. It gives us a time to find and groom his replacement.

And like I said, there's a million ways to get a 400k contract off the books, all it does for Reynolds is guarantees we look after him for that extra year instead of relying on an unwritten promise.

If I was reynolds I'd be asking for a 4th year too when I can get the same money and same years from a club down the road. There has to be an incentive to move your family across the country.
I'd rather give the same money with the pay sliding the other way to Sam Walker who will improve with age, and is exactly the kind of player Walters wants to build the club around. He's likely to be the Maroons captain one day. Or at least a mainstay in the team.

But yeah sure, Reynolds is a great player and will improve our side. No question. But do we want him front and centre of the Broncos for four years? Is he the look we're going for? Four years remember, when his own club won't give him two.

That's as long as we gave Wayne Bennett last time and longer than Newcastle, St George and Souths gave him. Walters has two years.

If we were any hope of getting Walker, I'd be right with you there.

The more I think about it, the more I think we need to take the deal.

What’s the most you’d pay Reynolds per season? I’d say 1m for 2 seasons or max 850k/900k for 3.

850k x 3 years give you $2.55m
That means if you agree to 2.8m over 4 years, you’d essentially be paying him $250k for the unwanted season. This close to minimum wage and what you’d expect to be paying for a back up half. Blake Green or Benji Marshall money. If his form has dropped so far by that point that he isn’t even worth that amount than you’d have to think medical or voluntary retirement with a golden handshake would be on the table.

This gives you 2 solid years of Reynolds while developing a replacement, 1 season of blooding the replacement when injury strikes to the 6 (Staggs?) or Adam while playing the majority of the season against men in Q cup, and a final transition year where Reynolds and the new kid aren’t costing you much and by the time Reynolds winds up there’s a kid who has developed in Q cup, been tutored by Adam, and has money available to a big upgrade.

If he (reynolds) does sign with us, he could be a handy kicking coach when he retires. I know we have AFL players visit every now and then but reynolds kicks a league ball (i know the mechanics are the same but the different ball shapes can make some subtle difference), can kick field goals and goal kick. He can do all this with his little legs, imagine what he could teach someone with a bit more muscle and leverage in the legs and hips.

If we were any hope of getting Walker, I'd be right with you there.
We should be asking the question, and I reckon it's worth a punt on paying overs on him.

Yeah, I guess but are we believing all these numbers?

Yeah, I guess but are we believing all these numbers?
No but as always they are equally as likely to higher than reality or lower than reality so it’s as close as we can get to the facts.

700k for Reynolds is an amazing deal for the next 2 years.
An okay deal for the 3rd year.
And a pretty questionable deal for the 4th.

It’s a risk for sure, but not the worst risk we’ve taken. Hopefully the club has very strict medical documentation requirements before anything is agreed to though.

Edit: I’m with you on Walker. He should be the face and future of the club for 5 years. On a Ponga like deal. My big concern is his shoulder, he definitely has issues with it.

So it’s stupid to lock up the dally m centre of the year for 4 years?! Come on man 😂

Yep. He isnt that great. He has a great highlight really, unfortunately, you could make an equally less impressive one with his failings. And you have a very, very flawed method of rating players if you judge them from the Dally M's

how do you know we haven't already asked the question ... i'm sure Kevvie knows how to get in touch with his father and uncles ... the club certainly know how to get in touch with his manager

Ironically enough, a big selling point for Reynolds should be his origin prospects.

Realistically he’ll never replace Cleary but if he wants to be first cab off the rank, Haas, TPJ, and Staggs (especially if he plays centre) are all in the picture for origin selections.

If he shows he’s good at bringing Haas into the game but even more importantly builds a good combination on that right side with TPJ and Staggs, he will be first in line if Cleary misses a game.

I'd rather 3 than 4 years but if we don't have any halfback prospects in the next year or two at least it gives us some breathing room to find one and develop them under the likes of Reynolds. Not as if we're bustling with options (at least that I'm aware of).

I hope he rejects us. We don't need him. The Penrith game proved it and had Gamble played in that game instead of who we had there I believe we would have won the game. Of course I can't know that for certain but that game proved to me we can match it with the best. We only need belief and commitment, we have the talent. That said Reynolds would improve our team and if it's responsible cash management I suppose we might as well.

I suppose I should say it like this, we don't need him but if we can afford him we may as well. I think the millions spent on Milford has soured me on long term big dollar deals. I'm probably wrong and bloody well hope so. Hell, thinking on it there's a chance Reynolds could make us top four material. I think it's more a want than a need. I admit I'm torn.

And just to add to this, obviously I mean in comparison to if he takes the Sharks deal, who as I see it don’t really have any prospects on the horizon unless Graham plays himself back into the fold.

On this topic, I’m not sure if moving to 5/8 now Is the smart option for Staggs. NSW (like QLD) have a shortage of legitimate centre options. Staggs and Bird should be able to put good cases forward for those spots if they continue their expected form.

Freddy has shown a willingness to pick spine players in those positions if they’ve played there before. Staggs will be very unlikely to make origin as a 5/8 because there is decent depth in NSW halves now. Walker, Wighton, Burton, Luai (in no order). If Staggs was smart he’d play 1 more season at centre and hope to crack the origin squad, then after a good series which would likely cement his position, he can move the halves at club level and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Long pointless post really

I would be astonished if they're not.
